Physical Boundary as a Source of Anomalies in Transport Processes in Acoustics and Electrodynamics

Various anomalous effects that emerge when the interfaces between media are involved in sound-matter or light-matter interactions are studied. The three specific systems examined are a fluid channel between elastic metal plates, a linear chain of metallic perforated cylindrical shells in air, and a metal-dielectric slab with the interfaces treated as finite regions of smoothly changing material properties. The scattering of acoustic signals on the first two is predicted to be accompanied by the effects of redirection and splitting of sound. In the third system, which supports the propagation of surface plasmons, it is discovered that the transition region introduces a nonradiative decay mechanism which adds to the plasmon dissipation. The analytical results are supported with numerical simulations. The outlined phenomena provide the ideas and implications for applications involving manipulation of sound or excitation of surface plasmons.

There is a need of substitution woods for the use in musical instruments because of the limited availabil-ity of some commonly used tropical tonewoods. Before substitutions can be found, it is necessary to knowabout the required properties. Hence, in this paper acoustical, mechanical and physical properties of fourcommon tropical hardwoods (Indian rosewood, ziricote, African blackwood and ebony) were determinedbecause there are less literature values for some properties available, e.g. internal friction, hardness orswelling behaviour. The acoustic properties were determined by means of experimental modal analysis,the mechanical properties by means of static bending tests and tests of the Brinell hardness. For the swel-ling behaviour the volume swelling and also the differential swelling coefficients were determined. Withthe results it is possible to look for new ‘tonewoods’ or to specifically modified woods, e.g. thermally trea-ted wood, to substitute tropical wood species.

The increasing quantity of waste represents serious environmental, social and economic problem. Wastes produced from industry and households. A large part of the economy transforms a certain amount of raw materials to waste in their production, because it is currently emphasis is placed on finding sustainable sources of raw materials. One of the suitable secondary raw materials can be discarded textiles or waste from the textile industry. These kinds of textile waste often ends up in landfills or incinerators, so it is from an ecological and environmentally advantageous to their further use. The diploma thesis deals with the study and development of thermal and acoustic insulation materials based on textile fibers. It focuses on the legislative requirements for waste management for the sorting of textile wastes and their subsequent modification before reuse. Further it contains kinds of textile fibers and bonding technologies thermal and acoustic insulation materials. Finally, an evaluation of thermal insulation, acoustic and mechanical properties of fibrous insulation materials.

Establishing a sea bottom model by applying a multi-sensor acoustic remote sensing approach

Detailed information about the oceanic environment is essential for many applications in the field of marine geology, marine biology, coastal engineering, and marine operations. Especially, knowledge of the properties of the sediment body is often required. Acoustic remote sensing techniques have become highly attractive for classifying the sea bottom and for mapping the sediment properties, due to their high coverage capabilities and low costs compared to common sampling methods. In the last decades, a number of different acoustic devices and related techniques for analyzing their signals have evolved. Each sensor has its specific application due to limitations in the frequency range and resolution. In practice, often a single acoustic tool is chosen based on the current application, supported by other non-acoustic data where required. However, different acoustic remote sensing techniques can supplement each other, as shown in this thesis. Even more, a combination of complementary approaches can contribute to the proper understanding of sound propagation, which is essential when using sound for environmental classification purposes. This includes the knowledge of the relation between acoustics and sediment properties, the focus of this thesis. Teachers frequently present with voice problems as result of functional voice hyperfunction and it seems that occupational duties often impede successful implementation of a conventional voice conservation strategies. The goal of this single-subject study was to investigate the practical value of personal voice amplification as an assistive option for teachers experiencing occupation-related voice problems The physical state of a teacher’s vocal chords and specific perceptual and acoustic attributes of her voice were evaluated before and after a period of conventional voice conservation, and also before and after a period during which personal voice amplification was used as an augmentative strategy. In the course of the study it was in the interest of the subject that a persistent vocal fold nodule be removed surgically. The research design was adapted accordingly and the study consequently included a pre- and post surgical phase. Physical examinations of the vocal cords reflected the positive effect of the surgical removal of a vocal fold nodule. An improvement in the general status of the vocal cords was also noted following periods during which personal voice amplification was used in combination with a conventional voice conservation strategy. Perceptual and acoustic analysis of voice quality confirmed the positive effect of the surgical intervention. Although a panel of judges did not detect an improvement in the subject’s voice quality following the assistive use of the personal amplifier, several acoustic voice parameters showed improvement or normalised after the use of personal voice amplification in combination with conventional voice conservation strategies. The subject’s repeated evaluation of her own voice experiences, as well as her view of the practicability of the two voice conservation strategies, revealed a remarkably positive attitude towards the augmentative use of personal voice amplification. Laser ultrasonics in a diamond anvil cell for investigation of simple molecular compunds at ultrahigh pressures / Ultrasons laser dans les cellules à enclume de diamant pour l'étude des composés moléculaires simples à ultrahautes pressions

Le travail que j’ai effectué durant ce doctorat est dédié à l’utilisation de l’ultrason des lasers sous haute pression physique. La recherche est construite en utilisant les récentes techniques de mesure de laser ultrasonique dans une enclume de diamant, conduisant à l’exploration de la propagation du son et de sa détermination suivant la vitesse de l’onde acoustique sous ultra-hautes pressions. La diffusion Brillouin a été appliquée ici pour déterminer l’épaisseur de la glace polycristalline compressée dans l’enclume à diamant sous pressions de mégabars. La technique permet d’examiner les caractéristiques des dimensions des inhomogénéités élastiques et la texture de la glace polycristalline, de ce fait ce processus est commun pour les surfaces de l’enclume à diamant avec des sous micromètres de résolution spatiale via les mesures des variations résolues dans le temps sur la vitesse de propagation du pouls acoustique voyageant dans l’échantillon compressé. Ceci a été appliqué pour mesurer la vitesse acoustique dans du H2O à l’état de glace jusqu’à 84 Gpa. La technique d’imagerie développée contient, pour chaque cristallite (ou groupe de cristallites) dans un ensemble homogène chimique transparent, des informations utiles sur son orientation ainsi que sur sa valeur élastique modulée par rapport à la direction de la propagation du son. Cela répand les bases pour une application réussite sur la déformation de solides sous haut-développement de modèles micromécaniques sous la pression à mégabars. Pour une plus longue durée, ce genre d’expériences répandus sur les minéraux de la terre et avec des températures basses ou hautes, assurerait un progrès important dans la compréhension de la construction de la cape terrestre, son évolution ainsi que celle d’autres planètes. / This PhD research work is devoted to the use of laser ultrasound in high-pressure physics. The research is done using the recently established technique of laser ultrasonic measurements in a diamond anvil cell which allows investigation of the sound propagation and determination of the acoustic wave velocities at ultrahigh pressures. Time domain Brillouin scattering was applied here to depth-profiling of polycrystalline aggregate of ice compressed in a diamond anvil cell to megabar pressures. The technique allowed examination of characteristic dimensions of elastic inhomogeneities and texturing of polycrystalline ice in the direction, normal to the diamond anvil surfaces with sub-micrometer spatial resolution via time-resolved measurements of variations in the propagation velocity of the acoustic pulse travelling in the compressed sample. It was applied to measure the acoustic velocities in H2O ice up to 84 Gpa. The developed imaging technique provides, for each crystallite (or a group of crystallites) in chemically homogeneous transparent aggregate, usable information on its orientation as well as on the value of the elastic modulus along the direction of the sound propagation. This extends the basis for a successful application of highly developed micromechanical models of solids deformation at mbar pressure. On long term, such experiments extended to earth’s minerals and high or low temperatures would insure a significant progress in understanding of convection of the earth’s mantle and thus evolution of this and other planets.
