Non-conformal gauge/string duality : A rigorous case study

Chen-Lin, Xinyi January 2017 (has links)
The gauge/string duality, a.k.a. the holographic principle is a profound assertion that emerged from string theory. It relates strongly-coupled gauge theories to weakly coupled string theories living in a higher-dimensional curved geometry. Nevertheless, it is a conjecture, and only a few instances of its more concrete form, the AdS/CFT correspondence, are well-understood. The most well-studied example is the duality between N=4 SYM, which is a CFT, and type IIB string theory in AdS5xS5 background. Generalization to less symmetric cases is a must, and the next logical step is to add a mass scale to N=4 SYM, therefore breaking its conformal symmetry and leading to N=2* SYM, the theory we study in this thesis. It is supersymmetric enough to employ the powerful localization method that reduces its partition function to a matrix model. We will see that the mass scale causes non-trivial phase structures in its vacuum configuration, visible in the holographic regime. We will probe them using Wilson loops in different representations of the gauge group. On the other hand, the dual supergravity background was derived by Pilch-Warner, making N=2* theory an explicitly testable non-conformal holographic case, which is a rare example. We will prove that the duality works for the dual observables (string action, D-branes) we managed to compute, even at a quantum-level.

Domain wall solutions in the AdS/CFT correspondence

Mateos González, Eduardo January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis we study a particular realization of the Domain wall/Quantum Field Theory correspondence, a modification of the Anti de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory correspondence that is used to study deformations of a Conformal Field Theory. In theQuantum gravity side of the duality we analyze a N = 1 gauged supergravity theory in 7 dimensions which presents two different Anti de-Sitter vacua, one of which preserves the full supersymmetry and one that breaks half of the supercharges. We will find a scalar 1/2-BPS solitonic solution describing a domain wall in an asymptotically Anti de-Sitter spacetime which interpolates between the supersymmetric AdS vacuum and a divergent AdS space situated at infinity, and we will calculate its tension and the effective mass of the scalar field when evaluated at the AdS vacuum. The dual theory of our gauged  supergravity is the 6-dimensional N = (1,0) Superconformal Field Theory, and the scalar 1/2-BPS field is dual to two relevant operators that induce a relevant deformation of the SCFT which can be identified with a renormalization group-flow. Here we will first compute the scaling dimension and the one-point functions of these operators in the SCFT, as well as indicating how to compute the two-point and three-point functions, and then we will study the c-function along the renormalization group-flow they induce and the beta function that characterizes this flow in order to derive some properties of the resulting Quantum Field Theory.

Periodic table of ordinary and supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Sun, Fadi 07 August 2020 (has links)
This dissertation is devoted to investigation of quantum chaos in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) and supersymmetric SYK models. First, a unified minimal scheme is developed to classify quantum chaos in the SYK and supersymmetric SYK models and also work out the structure of the energy levels in one periodic table. The SYK with even q-body or supersymmetric SYK with odd q-body interaction, with N even or odd number of sites, are put on an equal footing in the minimal Hilbert space; N (mod 8), q (mod 4) double Bott periodicity, and a reflection relation are identified. Then, exact diagonalizations are performed to study both the bulk energy level statistics and hard-edge behaviors. Excellent agreements between the exact diagonalization results and the symmetry classifications are demonstrated. This compact and systematic method can be transformed to map out more complicated periodic tables of SYK models with more degrees of freedom, tensor models, or symmetry protected topological phases.

UNIVERSAL CONSTRAINTS ON 2D CFTS AND 3D GRAVITY

Qualls, Joshua D 01 January 2014 (has links)
We study constraints imposed on a general unitary two-dimensional conformal field theory by modular invariance. We begin with a review of previous bounds on the conformal dimension Delta1 of the lowest primary operator assuming unitarity, a discrete spectrum, modular invariance, cL, cR > 1, and no extended chiral algebra. We then obtain bounds on the conformal dimensions Delta2, Delta3 using no additional assumptions. We also show that in order to find a bound for Delta4 or higher Deltan, we need to assume a larger minimum value for ctot that grows logarithmically with n. We next extend the previous results to remove the requirement that our two-dimensional conformal field theories have no extended chiral algebra. We then show that modular invariance also implies an upper bound on the total number of states of positive energy less than ctot=24 (or equivalently, states of conformal dimension between ctot=24 and ctot=12), in terms of the number of negative energy states. Finally, we consider the case where the CFT has a gravitational dual and investigate the gravitational interpretation of our results. Using the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence, we obtain an upper bound on the lightest few massive excitations (both with and without the constraint of no chiral primary operators) in a theory of 3D matter and gravity with Lambda < 0. We show our results are consistent with facts and expectations about the spectrum of BTZ black holes in 2+1 gravity. We then discuss the upper and lower bounds on number of states and primary operators in the dual gravitational theory, focusing on the case of AdS3 pure gravity.
