Extinction Coefficient Measurement Comparison of Tungsten Powder Clouds

Grenley, Spencer P 01 September 2021 (has links) (PDF)
All materials in dust form pose an increased risk of accidental deflagration, or explosion. For workplace safety, this risk of deflagration for a solid particulate sample is characterized through specialized dust explosibility testing systems. These systems disperse a cloud of powder inside a spherical chamber via a pressure gradient, where a timed ignition occurs. The accuracy of measurements taken during this process are predicated upon the assumption that the cloud of powder is uniformly distributed during the ignition period. Metal additive manufacturing (AM) is a rapidly expanding technology that, in some cases, involves heavy metal powders that do not disperse well in standard explosibility testing vessels. Consequently, there is a need to validate explosibility data for heavy metal powder blends to ensure that the dust sample is adequately dispersed in the chamber at the time of ignition. This thesis provides a method for employing optical dust probes to determine the concentration of a tungsten metal AM powder cloud inside an enclosed vessel. Optical dust probes are devices that measure light transmission through an attenuating medium, in this case a cloud of powder, and utilize Bouguer-Beer-Lambert (BBL) law to determine the concentration of particles. This thesis summarizes and synthesizes the assumptions and limitations of BBL law when used with optical dust probes, drawing from multiple published works with varying applications. The bounds of the average extinction efficiency are discussed, especially with respect to when the extinction paradox can be applied. Ultimately, it is determined that the BBL law can only be applied in this study to determine extinction coefficients, and that calculating a specific mass concentration value is theoretically misguided without specific modifications to the experimental setup. The extinction coefficients measured via an optical dust probe and a separate image analysis method are compared. Although no correlation could be established due to the limitations of this experimental setup, specific modifications are suggested that would enable this methodology to be used in future applications.

Aplicação de complexos de metais de transição coordenados a típicos aditivos orgânicos de banhos eletrolíticos em eletrodeposição binária de metais / Application of transition metal complexes coordinated with typical organic aditive from electrolitic bath for binary metal electrodeposition

Watanabe, Rogério Haruo 16 July 2008 (has links)
The main goal of this work is to use copper(II), nickel(II), zinc(II) and niobium(V) complexes as metal plating source in electrodeposition baths. The metal ions were coordinated with oxalate, citrate, ethylenediamine (EDA) or tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) as ligands, which are typical organic additives in electroplating. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry. The electrolyses in presence of two coordination complexes in the baths were carried out in absence of extra amount of additive, using 1010 steel as substrate at pH = 4.5 (H2SO4/Na2SO4). Deposits with two metal elements from the ex-situ generated complexes showed good quality morphologic aspect without crashes. Further, the deposits were analyzed by EDX, diffuse reflectance and X-ray spectroscopy and polarization curves were recorded. The deposits showed better morphologies than deposits obtained from the metal salt solutions in presence of additives under similar conditions. It is suggestive that the starting metal plating coordinated with additives influences the electrodeposition processes, affording deposits with corrosion potentials shifted over +200 mV in 0.5 mol.L-1 NaCl (1 mV.s-1).

A guilda de borboletas frugivoras em uma paisagem fragmentada no Alto Paraiba-SP / The guild of fruit-feeding butterflies in a fragmented landscape in the upper Paraiba River basin, São Paulo, Brazil

Ribeiro, Danilo Bandini, 1980- 09 June 2006 (has links)

Previous studies indicate that forest fragmentation affects the butterfly community, changing its composition and diversity. In view of the importance of knowing the fauna of these forest remainders, the present work had the objective to characterize the assemblage of fruit-feeding butterflies of ten forest fragments (ranging from 11 to 83 hectares) in the Upper Paraíba River Basin - SP and verify if the diversity of this group is randomly distributed in time and space. The fragments are in a matrix composed of anthropogenic scrub, areas of extensive cattle pasture and areas of Eucalyptus plantation. The samplings were made monthly using "Van Someren-Rydon" traps. In each month the traps remained open in the field for eight consecutive days. A mixture of banana with sugar cane juice fermented for 48h was used as bait. The hypothesis that the fruit-feeding butterflies are randomly distributed in time and space was tested using additive partitioning of diversity. During 13 months 6488 individuals of 73 species and five subfamilies of fruit-feeding butterflies were sampled. According to the Chao 2 and Jacknife estimators the assemblage of fruit-feeding butterflies was almost totally sampled; the number of butterflies present in the community but not sampled is between two and 10 species (Chao 2 = 80.56 + 5.96; Jacknife = 83.89 + 3.46). These results are equivalent to those found in environments with similar characteristics but with less human disturbance and fragmentation, such as the Serra do Japi (SP) and the Reserva do Morro Grande (SP), showing that despite the extensive fragmentation of natural vegetation in the region of the Upper Paraíba River Basin - SP, the forest remants still retain much of the diversity expected in the region. Similarity analyses showed that the communities in the fragments are very similar to one another. Despite this great similarity, small differences in the composition of species assemblages can be verified in more sensible tests like the analysis of the surroundings and additive partitioning of diversity. Surroundings analysis showed that the composition and abundance of the assemblages are strongly determined by the vegetation of the immediate surroundings (radius of 100m around the sample unit). Additive partitioning of diversity showed that the butterflies species were more grouped than expected in space and time, principally at the small scales examined. Probably, the favorable resources and conditions for the occurrence of these insects are not randomly distributed in time and space, resulting in the aggregation of species and individuals. These results can guide the creation of more efficient protocols to help inventories of fruit-feeding butterflies, and reaffirm their potential as indicators. The patterns verified in this study show that the landscape scale is not the most important in determining the assemblage of fruit-feeding butterflies. Local factors give more consistent patterns, observed in the small scales in both analyses used. / Mestrado / Mestre em Ecologia

On Maximizing The Performance Of The Bilateral Filter For Image Denoising

Kishan, Harini 03 1900 (has links) (PDF)
We address the problem of image denoising for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Poisson noise, and Chi-squared noise scenarios. Thermal noise in electronic circuitry in camera hardware can be modeled as AWGN. Poisson noise is used to model the randomness associated with photon counting during image acquisition. Chi-squared noise statistics are appropriate in imaging modalities such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). AWGN is additive, while Poisson noise is neither additive nor multiplicative. Although Chi-squared noise is derived from AWGN statistics, it is non-additive. Mean-square error (MSE) is the most widely used metric to quantify denoising performance. In parametric denoising approaches, the optimal parameters of the denoising function are chosen by employing a minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion. However, the dependence of MSE on the noise-free signal makes MSE computation infeasible in practical scenarios. We circumvent the problem by adopting an MSE estimation approach. The ground-truth-independent estimates of MSE are Stein’s unbiased risk estimate (SURE), Poisson unbiased risk estimate (PURE) and Chi-square unbiased risk estimate (CURE) for AWGN, Poison and Chi-square noise models, respectively. The denoising function is optimized to achieve maximum noise suppression by minimizing the MSE estimates. We have chosen the bilateral filter as the denoising function. Bilateral filter is a nonlinear edge-preserving smoother. The performance of the bilateral filter is governed by the choice of its parameters, which can be optimized to minimize the MSE or its estimate. However, in practical scenarios, MSE cannot be computed due to inaccessibility of the noise-free image. We derive SURE, PURE, and CURE in the context of bilateral filtering and compute the parameters of the bilateral filter that yield the minimum cost (SURE/PURE/CURE). On processing the noisy input with bilateral filter whose optimal parameters are chosen by minimizing MSE estimates (SURE/PURE/CURE), we obtain the estimate closest to the ground truth. We denote the bilateral filter with optimal parameters as SURE-optimal bilateral filter (SOBF), PURE-optimal bilateral filter (POBF) and CURE-optimal bilateral filter (COBF) for AWGN, Poisson and Chi-Squared noise scenarios, respectively. In addition to the globally optimal bilateral filters (SOBF and POBF), we propose spatially adaptive bilateral filter variants, namely, SURE-optimal patch-based bilateral filter (SPBF) and PURE-optimal patch-based bilateral filter (PPBF). SPBF and PPBF yield significant improvements in performance and preserve edges better when compared with their globally-optimal counterparts, SOBF and POBF, respectively. We also propose the SURE-optimal multiresolution bilateral filter (SMBF) where we couple SOBF with wavelet thresholding. For Poisson noise suppression, we propose PURE-optimal multiresolution bilateral filter (PMBF), which is the Poisson counterpart of SMBF. We com-pare the performance of SMBF and PMBF with the state-of-the-art denoising algorithms for AWGN and Poisson noise, respectively. The proposed multiresolution-based bilateral filtering techniques yield denoising performance that is competent with that of the state-of-the-art techniques.
