Educator Perceptions of Transition Programming for Youth with Disabilities

A local problem exists with transition service providers lacking the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively implement transition planning practices, ensuring youth with disabilities experience positive in-school and post school success. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate transition service provider perceptions of implementation variables that impact the transition service providers' use of evidence-based practices with youth with disabilities. Kohler, Gothberg, Fowler, and Coyle's Taxonomy for Transition Programming 2.0 was used as the conceptual framework for this study. Interview participants included 5 special educators, 4 general educators, 2 district administrators, 2 child study team members, and 2 guidance counselors. Open coding and thematic analysis were used to analyze the results from 15 participants. Themes that emerged from the results of this study were the need for professional development for educators and the need for assistance with parental engagement in the transition planning process. Results from this study may provide positive social change in the form of data to inform future professional development for schools and districts across the United States regarding how to provide meaningful transitional support to youth with disabilities.

Adult Exposure to Bt Toxin Cry1Ac Reduces Life Span and Reproduction of Resistant and Susceptible Pink Bollworm (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

Insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are used widely in sprays and transgenic plants to control insect pests. Although much research has elucidated the effects of Bt toxins on larvae, relatively little is known about their effects on adults. Here, we evaluated the effects of exposing adults to Bt toxin Cry1Ac on the life span and reproduction of two strains of pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders)). In larval diet bioassays, the concentration of Cry1Ac killing 50% of larvae (LC50) was 640 times higher for the laboratory-selected resistant strain (AZP-R) than the susceptible strain (APHIS-S). In experiments with adults, the highest concentrations of Cry1Ac tested (160 and 640 mu g Cry1Ac per ml of 5% honey water) reduced life span for both strains. Treatments with 10, 40, and 160 mg Cry1Ac per ml reduced the duration of the oviposition period as well as the number of eggs laid by both strains, but did not affect the percentage of pairs producing eggs, the duration of the preoviposition period, or the percentage of eggs hatching for either strain. Adult life span did not differ between strains at low to moderate concentrations of Cry1Ac, but it was significantly greater for the resistant strain than the susceptible strain at the two highest concentrations of Cry1Ac tested. The reduced susceptibility to high concentrations of Cry1Ac in adults of the AZP-R strain relative to the APHIS-S strain provides the first evidence of expression of resistance to a Bt toxin in adult Lepidoptera.

Coletivos juvenis e transição para vida adulta: desafios vividos por jovens da cidade de São Paulo / Youth collectives and transition to adult life: challenges faced by young people in the city of São Paulo

Em que medida a participação dos jovens nos coletivos juvenis afeta, e como afeta, os modos de transição para a vida adulta na atualidade? Esta foi a pergunta norteadora desta pesquisa, que se apoiou em uma abordagem qualitativa, por meio da realização de entrevistas compreensivas com 30 indivíduos jovens, sendo 17 homens e 13 mulheres, na faixa etária de 19 a 31 anos, participantes e ex-participantes de diferentes formas associativas juvenis da cidade de São Paulo. A pesquisa constatou que os processos de transição para a vida adulta são marcados por idas e vindas (PAIS, 2001) e identificou que a experiência nos grupos trouxe novos desafios para os jovens no trânsito para a vida adulta, em especial no campo do trabalho e da independência pessoal. A presença nos coletivos afetou as individualidades jovens nas suas diferentes gramáticas: do suporte, da identidade e do respeito (MARTUCCELLI, 2007). Possibilitou, também, forjar uma nova forma de viver a adultez, pautada na criatividade e no engajamento. Participar dos coletivos juvenis não afetou somente a transição, mas possibilitou reconfigurar o início da vida adulta, que ganhou novos contornos. Por fim, a pesquisa inferiu que as fronteiras entre ser jovem e ser adulto não são fixas e nem delimitadas de modo rígido, mas elásticas e porosas, o que permite aos indivíduos circularem entre os dois mundos no mesmo tempo histórico: são jovens que vivem a adultez e adultos que carregam consigo as experiências e o modo de vida de jovens. / In which way the participation of young people in youth collectives affect, and how does it, the modes of transition to adulthood today? This was the guiding question of this research, which was based on a qualitative approach, through the comprehensive interviews with 30 young individuals, 17 men and 13 women, in the age group of 19 to 31 years old, participants and former participants of different youth associations in the city of São Paulo. The survey has shown that the transition process to adult life are marked by comings and goings (PAIS, 2001) and identified that group experiences has brought new challenges for young people on the road to adulthood, especially in professional life and personal independence. The presence in the collective affected the young individuals in their different grammars: from support, identity and respect (MARTUCCELLI, 2007). Also provided to forge a new way of living adulthood, based on creativity and engagement. Participating in the youth groups did not only affect the transition, but allowed to reconfigure the beginning of adult life, which has gained new contours. Finally, the research inferred that the boundaries between being young and being an adult are not fixed or bounded in a rigid mode, but elastic and porous, allowing individuals to move between the two worlds at the same historical time: they are young people living adulthood and adults who carry the experiences and way of life of young people.

Intergenerational transfers over the adult life cycle in three European welfare state regimes

Rapid population aging driven by increasing life expectancy and falling birthrates has resulted in substantial increases in the old-age dependency ratio and decreases in the ratio of workers to retirees in all developed nations. In this context, some policymakers look to the support role of the family to moderate the effects of potentially shrinking public support. Yet, relatively little is known about the flow of transfers between family generations across the life cycle or the influence of public policy on the size and timing of those transfers. A core objective of this dissertation is to study the nature and net value of family transfers, defined in terms of the financial value of various types of transfers parents give to children (e.g., money, care and help, grandchild care, and co-residence) net of the value of the same types transfers they receive from children. Data for this study come primarily from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe, and the sample includes 36,095 parent-child dyads from 11 European countries representing social democratic, conservative, and traditional welfare-state regimes. Time transfers are monetized using information on minimum and average hourly wages. The net value of intergenerational family transfers over the adult life cycle is estimated using piecewise linear spline regression. The findings reveal that intergenerational family transfers are nontrivial across mature European welfare states. Their net value follows a nonlinear pattern of positive transfers from parents to grown children until advanced old age when the net value declines sharply and ultimately becomes negative--the point at which the generational exchange starts mostly to benefit parents. The transition starts later and is less pronounced across more generous welfare states in Northern Europe, while the opposite is true of less generous welfare states in Southern Europe. Transfer behavior of parents and grown children across Europe is most consistent with the need for help and ability to give. The results demonstrate that assessments of the effects of public policies affecting intergenerational redistribution of resources would benefit from taking into account how family members of different generations redistribute resources due to changes in those policies. / text

An analysis of public policy toward adult life-long participation in sport in Australia, Finland and New Zealand

This thesis explores the development of public policy aimed at achieving adult life-long participation in sport in Australia, Finland and New Zealand. Adult life-long participation has frequently been claimed as an aspiration of sport policy in Australia, Finland and New Zealand. This study identifies the characteristics of the sport systems and sport policy process in each of the three countries and outlines the development of policy concerning participation in sport amongst adults. A case study approach was adopted focusing on each of the three countries in turn. Adopting a qualitative methodology the study utilised document analysis and semi-structured interviews to elicit data regarding the development of, and factors impacting upon, the development of sport for all. Focusing upon the meso-level of analysis, policy networks was found to be a useful lens through which to view Finland, drawing attention to a policy subsystem where there has been a consistent focus on sport for all over the last 40 years. The advocacy coalition framework (ACF) provided the greatest utility for providing insights into Australia and New Zealand. The ACF drew attention to competing coalitions within the New Zealand and Australian sport sub-systems highlighting the tensions that had surfaced between elite and mass sport development. Despite little evidence in Australia, Finland or New Zealand of a policy or strategy that could be 'pulled off the shelf and called adult life long participation the findings indicated that Finland has been able to achieve high levels of adult participation in sport. Over the last 40 years successive Finnish governments have been consistent in their approach with regard to the role of national and local government in promoting Sf A. In contrast the Australian federal government has consistently expressed a desire to increase levels of sport participation amongst all Australians, however, despite consistent exhortations policy implementation has failed to reflect the rhetoric. Recent changes to the New Zealand sport policy landscape have made identifying a clear sport development pathway difficult, however, grassroots sport appears to have remained outside the current public policy focus. This study concludes that despite the existence of broadly similar factors such as rising levels of obesity, declining levels of physical activity and continued aspirations for sporting success, quite different sport policy approaches have been adopted in each of the three countries. This draws attention to the role of domestic factors, such as the distinctive socio-economic political and cultural systems in shaping the direction of, and salience of, sport policy to government.

The Experience of Older Adult Couples Living with Chronic Illness at Home: Through the Lens of Health as Expanding Consciousness

Jones / As the United States population ages, knowing and understanding the older adult couple’s experience living with chronic illness at home is significant to inform new strategies of care, and planning of resources for the improvement in the health and well-being for a potentially vulnerable population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the older adult couple’s experience while living with chronic illness at home by answering the following research questions: What is the life pattern manifested by an older adult couple living with chronic illness at home? Are there common themes across the life patterns of older adult couples living with chronic illness living at home? The theoretical framework guiding this study was Margaret Newman’s Health as Expanding Consciousness using a hermeneutic-dialectic phenomenology method. The study’s sample consisted of 14 married older adults (> 65 years of age) couples living together at home. The research method explored the experiences of the older adult couple through dialogue within the context of their social environment in all its complexity. This approach gave voice to the older adult couples’ experiences and their meaning from their perspective, which facilitated insights about each older adult couple as well as common themes across the older adult couples. Three themes emerged from the study, (1) an unfolding pattern of living meaningfully as an older adult couple with chronic illness while moving through life transitions, (2) couple interconnectedness strengthens the bonding within the older adult couple and promotes self-growth, and (3) a resonating process within the older adult couple promotes movement toward expanding consciousness. Conceptual models are proposed. The diploma thesis deals with parent education at school at theoretical part. Its aim is to provide the necessary methodological ideas and principles which can promote better preparation for teachers of primary and lower secondary schools to implement parent education. The present work highlights the importance of family upbringing for the child's personality, the majority of the current instability in Czech families and the history of problematic areas and deficiencies in preparing children and adolescents for their future role as a father and a mother. The theoretical part is completed by defining the necessary requirements for teacher personality which dedicated to teaching about family and parenthood at the school. At the empirical part, there is a questionnaire to a sample probe 72 Czech teachers of first and second degree qualified to teach elementary science, health education, civic education (education for citizenship), family education, personal and social education, respectively other objects within which pay attention to family and parenthood. It was concluded that the attitudes of teachers to teach these topics in the choice proved to be rather positive. From comprehensive interviews guided by a semi-directive script, we sought to understand a set of experiences and challenges - especially in the University, in the world of work and in family life - that could be revealing of the processes of transition to adult life lived by ten young people - five girls and five boys - who study at the Federal University of São Carlos - Sorocaba campus. Held between the years of 2015 and 2016, the study focused on students from different courses and social insertions who had already attended at least half of their degree. The analysis of their narratives evidenced a multiplicity of trajectories, which are characterized by non-linear biographical pathways. The study revealed the importance of the new policies of access and permanence in the University, which have promoted a growing heterogeneity of subjects in a space historically restricted to the elites. In addition, it was possible to observe that while the trajectories are increasingly heterogeneous and unique, structural issues - especially linked to social origin and gender - appear as common challenges to be faced by girls and boys in their processes to conquer autonomy and Independence. / A pesquisa tem como objetivo central compreender os modos de transição para a vida adulta de jovens universitários. A partir de entrevistas compreensivas orientadas por um roteiro semi-diretivo, buscou-se apreender um conjunto de experiências e desafios – especialmente na universidade, no mundo do trabalho e na vida familiar – que pudessem ser reveladores dos processos de transição para vida adulta vividos por dez jovens - cinco moças e cinco rapazes - que estudam na Universidade Federal de São Carlos campus Sorocaba. Realizado entre os anos de 2015 e 2016, o estudo focalizou estudantes de diferentes cursos e inserções sociais que já tivessem cursado pelo menos a metade da graduação. A análise de suas narrativas evidenciou uma multiplicidade de trajetórias, as quais se caracterizam por percursos biográficos não-lineares. O estudo revelou a importância das novas políticas de acesso e permanência na universidade, as quais vêm promovendo uma crescente heterogeneidade de sujeitos em um espaço historicamente restrito às elites. Além disso, foi possível observar que ao mesmo tempo em que as trajetórias estão cada vez mais heterogêneas e singularizadas, questões estruturais – sobretudo ligadas à origem social e ao gênero – aparecem como desafios comuns a serem enfrentados pelas moças e rapazes em seus processos de conquista de autonomia e independência.
