Aspekte van die naamwoordkonstruksie in Griekwa-Afrikaans

Spruyt, Maria Magdalena January 1993 (has links)
Submitted in partial fulfillment for the requirements of the Degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Afrikaans in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 1993. Eng:=This dissertation focuses on a number of aspects of the noun phrase in Griekwa-Afrikaans, an important non-standard dialect of Afrikaans which has not yet been adequately described. It is intended as a contribution to a more balanced approach to linguistic description which accords all the dialects of Afrikaans equal merit. After particular aspects of the nominal construction in Griekwa-Afrikaans are described lexically and syntagmatically, a number of hypotheses are tested regarding the relationship between Griekwa-Afrikaans and koine Afrikaans. The first conclusion arrived at is that there are overwhelming similarities in the nominal construction on lexical as well as syntagmatic level between Griekwa-Afrikaans and koine Afrikaans without there being any significant differences. A second and unexpected conclusion is that recorded speech in Griekwa-Afrikaans contains a significant number of quite complex noun phrases. It was also concluded that some respondents exhibit inherent variation with regard to particular aspects of pronominal usage while others do not. Finally it was concluded that the Kokstad, Philippolis and Campbell areas can be considered separate speech communities with regard to pronominal usage. / University of Zululand

= Engl: Various aspects of transitivity in Afrikaans are analyzed in this dissertation. While academic handbooks, pedagogic grammars and dictionaries contain information regarding transitivity there is no source where it is presented systematically. The first chapter motivates the need for such a research project on transitivity in Afrikaans. The second chapter sketches the tenets underlying cognitive grammar. The third chapter reviews the way in which various English and Afrikaans textbooks approach transitivity. The fourth chapter details the way in which transitivity is dealt with in cognitive grammar. The fifth chapter deals with the gestalt perceptions that people form of entities during the onset phase of semantic role designation. Chapter six deals with Afrikaans intransitive and transitive verbs of literal events while the conclusions arrived at in the course of this project arc presented in chapter seven.

Die ironie in enkele gedigte in Tristia van N P van Wyk Louw

Smuts, Susanna Elizabeth January 1984 (has links)
This study is an investigation of the ironical attribute inherent in poems which appear in Tristia by N P van Wyk Louw. The thesis can be divided into two sections: the first is an attempt at describing and defining philosophical irony; while the second serves as an introduction to the method (principally Literary Semantic) applied in the in-depth analysis in Chapter 4. The first chapter is a brief description of the history of irony starting ,with Socratic irony. Chapter 2.1 gives an eclectic view of the metaphysical irony of Nietzsche and his view of art. Chapter 2.2 describes Soren Kierkegaard's concept of irony and his distinction between aesthetic and ethic irony. It should become apparent that the religious irony of Kierkegaard flows mainly from the counterdistinction of the human to the godlike. In Chapter 2.3 existential irony is defined with reference to Kierkegaard as father of existential irony. N P van Wyk Louw's statements on art and his philosophy is viewed in chapter 2.4 with reference to the theories of the above mentioned philosophers. Chapter 3 refers to the poem as a vehicle for various implication phenomena, and views irony as a specific implication phenomenon. This section uses as an analytical foundation J L Austin's Speech Act Semantics and F de Saussure's distinction of synchronic and diachronic linguistics. Some definitions of irony are evaluated. No alternative definition is provided but some assumptions are put forward on the function of irony as a form of implication. Chapter 4 comprises in-depth text analyses of selected poems in Tristia. The function of irony in these poems is investigated. Chapter 5 provides a general explanation for the use of irony in Tristia. Two vital poems in Tristia are looked at and it is concluded that poetry is the medium through which this poet identifies his ironical relationship to the universe.
