Demographic and socio-economic characteristics of immigrant population in Greece (1991-2011) : Comparisons from census data and vital statistics.

Evangelou, Alexandros January 2019 (has links)
Immigrant flows in Greece after 1990 transformed Greece from a country of outwards migration to an inwards migration state. The contribution of immigrants in a globalized world of migration with sub-replacement fertility levels found in developed countries is a particularly interesting topic in demographic studies. The primary aim of this thesis is to discuss the changes of the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of immigrant population in Greece focusing on Albanian and Bulgarian immigrants. In order to answer these research questions, data from the last three national population census of 1991, 2001 and 2011 as well as vital statistics for European and non-European immigrants’ fertility in Greece have been used. The analysis is based on descriptive statistics for the differential age structure of Greek population and immigrant groups. Reasons for immigration to Greece, educational attainment of immigrants, rates of unemployment and employment status of immigrant population have been used to approach the research questions. The results indicated a younger age structure of Albanian and Bulgarian immigrant population. Meanwhile, immigrant population appears to have higher unemployment rates compared to native Greek population. Finally, a substantial decline of general fertility rates for non-European immigrant women in Greece compared to native Greek women has been observed within the years of the economic recession.

What are the criteria that define an adult individual? Why his/her behavior? Age groups, rites of passage and relationship between generations are the guides for understanding the condition and definition of social position of an adult person; the myth of hero and the Greek arete affirm their prerogatives; the movie Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and... Spring illustrates these concepts. The analysis of other films Mondays in the Sun reveals an important aspect in that apparently extravagant behavior: the demonstration of suffering. Lino's acts confirm this hypothesis. His daily life exposes the rhythm and the demands of our liquid modernity; his attitude is a defensive strategy. The new evidence demands extension of analysis. The legitimation of this model denounces the rite as reinforcement of institutions; qualification as instrument of power and competition, and use of the myth as a way of control. The passage of collective for individual instance, of predicate of subject for verb and the neurotic fixation in youth appear as important elements for the understanding of current times and bring to the light the concept of unigeneration and the reaffirmation of the annihilation rite. The story of Lester Burnham in American Beauty presents a character sensitive to pressure. Lester acts in a similar way to that of Lino, but with an important difference: turning into scapegoat his sad and emancipatory condition allows reconsidering values, references and the position of an adult person / O comportamento adolescente é o fio condutor da discussão sobre o significado e o locus do adulto na sociedade contemporânea.

Mixture model analysis with rank-based samples

Hatefi, Armin January 2013 (has links)
Simple random sampling (SRS) is the most commonly used sampling design in data collection. In many applications (e.g., in fisheries and medical research) quantification of the variable of interest is either time-consuming or expensive but ranking a number of sampling units, without actual measurement on them, can be done relatively easy and at low cost. In these situations, one may use rank-based sampling (RBS) designs to obtain more representative samples from the underlying population and improve the efficiency of the statistical inference. In this thesis, we study the theory and application of the finite mixture models (FMMs) under RBS designs. In Chapter 2, we study the problems of Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation and classification in a general class of FMMs under different ranked set sampling (RSS) designs. In Chapter 3, deriving Fisher information (FI) content of different RSS data structures including complete and incomplete RSS data, we show that the FI contained in each variation of the RSS data about different features of FMMs is larger than the FI contained in their SRS counterparts. There are situations where it is difficult to rank all the sampling units in a set with high confidence. Forcing rankers to assign unique ranks to the units (as RSS) can lead to substantial ranking error and consequently to poor statistical inference. We hence focus on the partially rank-ordered set (PROS) sampling design, which is aimed at reducing the ranking error and the burden on rankers by allowing them to declare ties (partially ordered subsets) among the sampling units. Studying the information and uncertainty structures of the PROS data in a general class of distributions, in Chapter 4, we show the superiority of the PROS design in data analysis over RSS and SRS schemes. In Chapter 5, we also investigate the ML estimation and classification problems of FMMs under the PROS design. Finally, we apply our results to estimate the age structure of a short-lived fish species based on the length frequency data, using SRS, RSS and PROS designs.
