A hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization of the adaptive integral method for multi-core clusters

Wei, Fangzhou 02 August 2011 (has links)
A hybrid of message passing and shared memory techniques is presented for scalable parallelization of the adaptive integral method (AIM), an FFT based algorithm, on clusters of identical multi-core processors. The proposed hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization scheme is based on a nested one-dimensional (1-D) slab decomposition of the 3-D auxiliary uniform grid and the associated AIM calculations: If there are M processors and T cores per processor, the scheme (i) divides the uniform grid into M slabs and MT sub-slabs, (ii) assigns each slab/sub-slab and the associated operations to one of the processors/cores, and (iii) uses MPI for inter-processor data communication and OpenMP for intra-processor data exchange. The MPI/OpenMP parallel AIM is used to accelerate the MOM solution of combined-field integral equations pertinent to the analysis of scattering from perfectly conducting surfaces. The scalability and efficiency of the implementation are investigated theoretically and verified numerically by solving benchmark scattering problems on a (near) petaflop supercomputing cluster of quad-core processors. The timing and speedup results on up to 1024 processors show that the proposed hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallelization exhibits better strong scalability (fixed problem size speedup) compared to pure MPI parallelization when multiple cores are used on each processor. / text

The Influence of Police Brutality on the American Indian Movement's Establishment in Minneapolis, 1968-69

Birong, Christine January 2009 (has links)
The American Indian Movement (AIM) was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1968. During this time, AIM organized around a variety of urban Indian community grievances, particularly police brutality and accountability issues. This thesis provides discussion of the nature of police brutality and police brutality's context in 1960s communities of color. There is also examination and analysis of how AIM organized around the issue of police brutality, direct action tactics, how police brutality impacted specific group members (specifically Clyde Bellecourt), and newspaper coverage of AIM and the police. The purpose of this thesis is to review how and why AIM organized around police brutality.

Online regulations of low order systems under bounded control

Arora, Sumit 30 September 2004 (has links)
Time-optimal solutions provide us with the fastest means to regulate a system in presence of input constraints. This advantage of time-optimal control solutions is offset by the fact that their real-time implementation involves computationally intensive iterative techniques. Moreover, time-optimal controls depend on the initial state and have to be recalculated for even the slightest perturbation. Clearly time-optimal controls are not good candidates for online regulation. Consequently, the search for alternatives to time-optimal solutions is a very active area of research. The work described here is inspired by the simplicity of optimal-aim concept. The "optimal-aim strategies" provide online regulation in presence of bounded inputs with minimal computational effort. These are based purely on state-space geometry of the plant and are inherently adaptive in nature. Optimal-aim techniques involve aiming of trajectory derivative (or the state velocity vector) so as to approach the equilibrium state in the best possible manner. This thesis documents the efforts to develop an online regulation algorithm for systems with input constraints. Through a number of hypotheses focussed on trying to reproduce the exact time-optimal solution, the diffculty associated with this task is demonstrated. A modification of optimal-aim concept is employed to develop a novel regulation algorithm. In this algorithm, aim directions are chosen in a special manner to generate the time-optimal control approximately. The control scheme thus developed is shown to be globally stabilizing for systems having eigenvalues in the CLHP (closed left half-plane). It is expected that this method or its modifications can be extended to higher dimensional systems as a part of future research. An alternative control algorithm involving a simple state-space aiming concept is also developed and discussed.

Aeronautical Information - And the Process behind It

Isulv, Alexandra, Lage, Jonatan January 2013 (has links)
In air traffic, safety is the key word. Safety is kept in numerous ways. One of these ways is with the help of Aeronautical Information (AI). AI is all information regarding air traffic, i.e. aerodrome hours of operation, weather reports and information about unserviceable navigational aids. Sometimes it happens that some of the information does not reach the pilots in the aircraft, which can have a negative impact on safety. This thesis examines the flow of AI all the way from the originator of the information to the end-user, and analyzes it to find where the errors occur. The thesis is based on the rules and regulations set by ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, two field trips to the Swedish AI provider LFV, and interviews with four airlines, Novair, NextJet, Malmö Aviation, and SAS. The results exposes where in the flow the weakness exists, and finally gives advice as to how these weaknesses can be addressed.

On the Performance of the Solaris Operating System under the Xen Security-enabled Hypervisor

Bavelski, Alexei January 2007 (has links)
This thesis presents an evaluation of the Solaris version of the Xen virtual machine monitor and a comparison of its performance to the performance of Solaris Containers under similar conditions. Xen is a virtual machine monitor, based on the paravirtualization approach, which provides an instruction set different to the native machine environment and therefore requires modifications to the guest operating systems. Solaris Zones is an operating system-level virtualization technology that is part of the Solaris OS. Furthermore, we provide a basic performance evaluation of the security modules for Xen and Zones, known as sHype and Solaris Trusted Extensions, respectively. We evaluate the control domain (know as Domain-0) and the user domain performance as the number of user domains increases. Testing Domain-0 with an increasing number of user domains allows us to evaluate how much overhead virtual operating systems impose in the idle state and how their number influences the overall system performance. Testing one user domain and increasing the number of idle domains allows us to evaluate how the number of domains influences operating system performance. Testing concurrently loaded increasing numbers of user domains we investigate total system efficiency and load balancing dependent on the number of running systems. System performance was limited by CPU, memory, and hard drive characteristics. In the case of CPU-bound tests Xen exhibited performance close to the performance of Zones and to the native Solaris performance, loosing 2-3% due to the virtualization overhead. In case of memory-bound and hard drive-bound tests Xen showed 5 to 10 times worse performance.

Etude des éléments dialogiques présents dans les processus de conceptualisation lors des discussions à visée philosophique en cycle 3 de l'école élémentaire. / Study of the present dialogical elements in the processes of conceptualization during the discussions with philosophic aim in cycle 3 of the elementary school.

Roine, Philippe 14 November 2016 (has links)
For over two decades, a growing number of new philosophical practices have emerged in the primary schools. These practices which originated in both the United States and the “new pedagogies”, have for a long time been developed outside the institutional framework. However, since 2015, there have been recommended by the official programmes of the National Education System known as “the discussion with philosophical aim”.The object of our research aims to characterize the processes of conceptualization present in the discourses of children aged 9 to 11 during the “discussion with philosophical aim”.In this context, we examined more specifically the place and role of the “other speech” within this process. To achieve this, we used, within the vast range of dialogism, the theoretical framework of the “Representation of another speech” and the “Representation of the speech in process of making” from Authier-Revuz. We also focused on the differents forms of modalisation of the discourse and the conditional tense. We have established the presence of these “other speeches” in the discursive movements who participate in the processes of conceptualization and the importance of the processes of autonymisation and autonymous modalisation. We have also shown the “disconnect effect” present in certain statements. Our study thus helped to futher characterize the processes of conceptualization present in “the discussion with philosophical aim”.
