Three studies in air cargo logistics. / Airfreight forwarder's aggregate resource planning : booking of cargo space and disaggregation viability / Dynamic partnership in online logistics community : concepts and a knowledge framework / Optimal baggage limit policy : airline passenger and cargo allocation / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / ProQuest dissertations and thesesJanuary 2008 (has links)
In the first study, we formulate the passenger and cargo allocation problem as a variant of the price-dependent multi-item newsvendor model with capacity constraints. The effects of baggage weight, pricing, and costing on the number of passengers and amount of cargo carried are studied. Based on the model and the existing practice of carriers, we develop several illustrative cases and fend that to maximize profit, large aircraft may need to reduce their baggage limits significantly from the current policy. / In the second study, we propose the dynamic partnership concept, which assures a feasible partnership in an online logistics community. After identifying the platform requirements, a preliminary knowledge framework which describes the collaborative knowledge and new knowledge managing approaches is suggested. / In the third study, we provide a two-phase framework for an airfreight forwarder's resource planning. In each timed phase, an optimization model first determines the aggregates and a simulation model then examines the disaggregated situations evaluating whether the aggregate estimates are viable under disaggregation and uncertainties. Here, a set of measurements are established to evaluate the performance of a resource plan. For the inadequate plans, areas of possible improvements are identified for revision. / Three studies in air cargo logistics are conducted respectively, covering the following three areas: carrier's passenger and cargo management, logistics service provider's partnership strategy, and an airfreight forwarder's resource planning. / study 1. Simulação e análise de configurações aeroportuárias utilizando visual SIMMOD: aplicação ao Aeroporto Internacional de São Paulo/Guarulhos. / Simulation and analysis of airport configurations using Visual SIMMOD: application to the São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport.Rodrigo Florio Moser 15 February 2007 (has links)
This paper describes a methodology for airport airside operational evaluation involving simulation models. It deals with apron gates, taxiways, runways and part of the aerodrome traffic zone (approach and initial departure paths) modifications and improvements. Among several computational tools for airport capacity and delay analysis, SIMMOD - Airport and Airspace Simulation Model with Visual SIMMOD data preparation toolkit was chosen as the tool for the methodology development. The proposed methodology framework was outlined associating system approach and simulation techniques and then applied to São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport as a case study. A baseline scenario with current airport infrastructure was modeled, simulated and validated with actual operational data. The developed methodology consists in analysis procedures and controls that allow scenarios evaluation, including analytical models, capacity curves, graphical comparisons (runway movements, gate occupation, travel times and delays) and demand increasing to reach practical capacity. Based on the created scenarios outcomes it was possible to describe the system performance, indicating better solutions. The proposed methodology was found appropriate for systematic analyses of this type of problem.

Assessment of customers' service quality expectations : Testing the 'Hierarchical Structure for Airport Service Quality Expectations' in a Swedish contextFarmahini Farahani, Aliakbar, Törmä, Emil January 2010 (has links)

The ‘Hierarchical structure for airport service quality expectations’ model originally comes from theory of service quality assessment and was created by Fodness and Murray in 2007 after a study at six U.S. airports. It reveals the most important factors that comprise service quality. This thesis tested the model in a Swedish context with an empirical study among passengers at two Swedish airports; Arlanda and Umeå. With the help of literature, the empirical study, and reasoning, the original model has been modified by the authors of this thesis. There are minor modifications but the three main factors remain as they were in the original model, namely function, interaction, and diversion.

Beyond current means : meeting public aviation demand in the border region in 2035Phillips, Natasha Allyn 04 December 2013 (has links)
Although not often discussed in planning curriculum across the United States,
airports are a very significant part of the country’s transportation infrastructure. With so
much emphasis placed on ground transportation modes such as light rail, bus, and bike,
the impact of aviation on the transportation world gets lost in translation. This study
seeks to bring airport planning back into the conversation by analyzing population
projections, income, and industry and their affect on airport preparedness to meet
increasing population demands. By using population projections through 2035 for the
State of Texas, gross population and population growth rates were used to select counties
within Texas that may be most in need of airport planning considerations. Counties
along the Texas-Mexico border were analyzed in further detail for planning
considerations and preparedness based on their population growth rates. Hidalgo County’s McAllen-Miller International Airport (MFE) was found to be proactively
seeking changes to their airfield that matched recommendations based on their population
increase. However, the level of coordination with city or county level authorities is
lacking. / text
