Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts (Counselling Psychology) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2012. / Living with alcohol-abusing parents during the adolescence stage is often an emotional draining experience to some adolescents. This study was purposed at exploring the experiences that adolescents living with parents who abuse alcohol go through and the coping mechanisms that they employ to deal with such experiences. The convenient sample of six participants was selected from the Appelsbosch population and they participated voluntarily. The research findings indicated that the experiences of adolescents living with alcohol abusing in Appelsbosch are comprised by parent’s lack of proper parental supervision, lack of parent’s involvement in their school work, poverty, being sent out at night, witnessing parent’s conflicts, and assuming a role of a caregiver at an early age. Other family members, neighbors, friends, social groups as well as sport groups were found to be effective in helping adolescents cope with the parent’s alcohol abuse. / Medical Research council

<p>Since the anecdotal assumption is that GPs do not effectively diagnose and manage problem drinking amongst their patients, this study investigated the role of GPs in addressing problem drinking in Cape Town as well as the prevalence of problem drinking amongst their patients.</p>

Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Although research has shown that alcohol abuse in the Western Cape is amongst the highest in South Africa, lesbian-identified women have largely been ignored in this area of research. International literature has identified alcohol abuse amongst lesbian-identified women as a significant problem, with alcohol consumption rates considerably higher than their heterosexual counterparts. This interpretative phenomenological analysis explored lesbianidentified women’s lived experiences (n = 25) with alcohol abuse through in-depth semistructured interviews, in order to gain insight into their motivations for abusing alcohol and the impact this had on their lives and relationships. The core theme that emerged from the analysis of participants’ narratives was that alcohol abuse was related to coping with emotional distress and pain. The emotional distress participants experienced was due to their sexual minority status and encompassed aspects related to internalised homophobia, escaping pain, rejection, discrimination based on sexual orientation, mental health issues, patriarchy, heteronormativity, and homophobia. Results substantiate the need for the development of prevention, intervention, and support strategies, aimed specifically at sexual minority groups, in order to facilitate effective coping with sexual minority stress, mental health issues, and other distresses related to alcohol abuse.

Överkonsumtion av alkohol har blivit ett stort hälsoproblem i samhället. En ökande acceptans bland folket har lett till ett missbruk i många fall. Det återstår fortfarande mycket att diskutera angående detta hälsoproblem, inte minst bland vårdpersonalen. Syftet med denna litteraturöversikt var att undersöka faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskors möte med personer med ett alkoholmissbruk. Den metod som användes var litteraturöversikt enligt Fribergs beskrivning. Artiklarna som användes var både kvantitativa och kvalitativa. Resultaten visade tre områden; sjuksköterskans attityd gentemot alkohol och alkoholmissbruk, sjuksköterskans kunskap om alkoholmissbruk samt sjuksköterskans rädsla för patientens reaktioner. Alla dessa tre områden påverkar sjuksköterskors möte med personer med alkoholmissbruk. / Overconsumption of alcohol has become a major health issue in society. A growing acceptance among people has led to a misuse of alcohol in many cases. It still remains a lot to discuss about this health issue, not least among health workers. The subject of this literature review was to examine factors that affect nurses encounters with people who abuse alcohol. The method used was a literature review according to Friberg. The articles that were used were both quantitative and qualitative. The results showed three subjects; nurses’ attitude towards alcohol and alcohol abuse, nurses’ knowledge about alcohol abuse and nurses’ fear of patients reactions. All these three subjects affect nurses’ meetings with people who abuse alcohol.
