Tucson's Tools for Demand Management

From the Proceedings of the 1978 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 14-15, 1978, Flagstaff, Arizona / Tucson's "Beat the Peak" program implemented in the summer of 1977 effectuated a reduction in peak day water usage from 151.5 million gallons per day on July 9, 1976, to 114.0 million gallons per day on July 8, 1977. This twenty-five percent reduction, if maintained, will allow a three -year deferral of a new remote wellfield and transmission pipeline estimated to cost between $25 and $50 million. More time will be available to analyze the cost effectiveness of solutions to the region's water resources supply problems (such as imported groundwater, Central Arizona Project water, effluent reuse, and their interrelationships). Although conservation was not promoted, the successful peak management program resulted in a 13.3 percent reduction in 1977 water use during the summer months (May through August) compared to usage during the same period in 1976. This resulted in water sales revenues less than projected, but the combination of less utility expenses and deferred capital improvements will yield lower customer rates and monthly bills than would have otherwise been necessary without the program.

Wi-Fi 7 : Multi-Link Operation in XR industrial scenarios / Wi-Fi 7 : Multi-link Operation i XR industriella scenarier

Since its first release in the late 1990s, Wi-Fi has been updated to keep up with evolving user needs. Wi-Fi and other radio access technologies have been pushed to their edge when it comes to serving Extended Reality (XR) applications. Adopting XR applications in the industry has the possibility of numerous advantages. However, these applications require high throughput, low latency, and high reliability to ensure a high-quality user experience. The 802.11be amendment, which will be advertised as Wi-Fi 7, introduces several features that aim to enhance the capabilities of Wi-Fi to support challenging applications like XR. One of the main features introduced in this amendment is the Multi-Link Operation (MLO) which allows nodes to transmit and receive over multiple links concurrently. When using MLO, traffic is distributed among links using an implementation-specific traffic-to-link allocation policy. Since the amendment does not specify the traffic-to-link allocation policies, it is interesting to investigate the performance of different policies when serving industrial XR applications. This project aims to evaluate the performance of MLO, using numerous policies, in serving industrial XR applications compared to Single-Link (SL). Experimental simulations using an event-based Radio Access Technology (RAT) simulator have been conducted in different scenarios and setups. These scenarios and setups investigated the effects of the number of links, policy, bandwidth, and interference on the performance of Wi-Fi. Our results show the general superiority of MLO when serving XR applications. MLO achieves lower latency and serves a higher number of XR users compared to SL with the same frequency resources. We also found that using the same frequency resources, increasing the device complexity with MLO is more beneficial than increasing it using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). In addition, our results show that interference with large packet sizes from neighbouring cells is challenging for Wi-Fi when serving XR because of the high-reliability requirement. Regarding traffic-to-link allocation policies, we found that some policies are more vulnerable to channel blocking, which can result in performance degradation. / Sedan slutet av 1990-talet, när IEEE 802.11-standarden först släpptes, har den uppdaterats för att hålla jämna steg med föränderliga användarbehov. Våra resultat visar MLO:s överlägsenhet i allmänhet när man betjänar XR applikationer. MLO uppnår lägre fördröjningar och betjänar fler antal XR användare jämfört med SL med samma frekvensresurser. Vi upptäckte också att, med användning av samma frekvensresurser, ökning av enhetens komplexitet med MLO är mer fördelaktigt än med MIMO. Dessutom visar våra resultat att störningar med stora paket storlekar är utmanande för Wi-Fi när vi betjänar XR på grund av den höga pålitlighets krav. När det gäller trafik-till-länk-tilldelningspolicyer, fann vi att vissa policyer är mer sårbara för störningar, vilket kan resultera i en prestation degradering.

Técnicas de proteção e restauração em redes ópticas elásticas / Protection and restoration techniques in elastic optical networks

As redes ópticas estão passando por mudanças significativas, impulsionadas pelo crescimento exponencial do tráfego, principalmente advindo de serviços multimídia e armazenamento em nuvem. Esta demanda exigirá aumento da capacidade da taxa de transmissão para padrões como 400 Gb/s e 1 Tb/s. Nesse contexto, foi proposta uma arquitetura de rede com grade de frequências granular flexível chamada elastic optical network (EON). A EON divide o espectro de frequências em fatias (slots) de tamanho fixo e aloca grupos de slots contíguos estritamente de acordo com os requisitos de banda das demandas de conexão, implicando eficiência de uso do espectro. Com o aumento significativo da taxa de transmissão, acentuou-se a preocupação em manter a sobrevivência da rede, já que pouco tempo de queda no serviço pode acarretar uma imensa perda de dados. Neste trabalho, investigamos esquemas de proteção baseados em caminhos compartilhados (shared-path protection, SPP) e esquemas de restauração de tráfego. Avaliamos esquemas divulgados na literatura como o dynamic load balancing shared-path protection (DLBSPP) e esquemas de restauração como o traffic aware restoration (TAR) e bandwidth squeezed restoration (BSR). Avaliamos também uma heurística de alocação de slots chamada inverted dual stack (IDS). O DLBSPP utiliza balanceamento dinâmico de carga para computar os caminhos primários e de proteção compartilhados. O TAR executa a restauração dinâmica ordenando as conexões por granularidade de banda. O BSR utiliza a capacidade de contração de banda do EON para restaurar conexões por meio da política de melhor esforço ou de banda garantida, dependendo do acordo de níveis de serviço do cliente. O esquema IDS concentra o maior número possível de slots compartilhados em uma região do espectro. As medidas de desempenho dos algoritmos são avaliadas segundo as métricas: probabilidade de bloqueio, taxa de utilização do espectro, número médio de hops e taxa de restauração falha. As simulações computacionais mostram o bom desempenho da utilização do esquema IDS com DLBSPP. / Optical networks are undergoing significant changes driven by the exponentially growing traffic, especially coming from multimedia and cloud storage services. This demand will require increasing of the transmission rate capacity as high as 400 Gb/s and 1 Tb/s. Within this context, it was proposed the elastic optical network (EON), which is a network architecture with flexible granular frequency grid. EON divides the frequency spectrum into slices (slots) of fixed size and allocates groups of contiguous slots strictly according to the bandwidth requirement of the connection demands, providing high spectrum use efficiency. The significant increase in transmission rate put emphasis on the need to maintain the survival of the network, since the occurrence of faults in the network nodes or links can cause huge loss of data. In this work, we investigate protection schemes based on shared-path protection (SPP) and traffic restoration schemes. We evaluate schemes related in the literature, such as the dynamic load balancing shared-path protection (DLBSPP), and restoration schemes such as the traffic aware restoration (TAR) and the bandwidth squeezed restoration (BSR). The DLBP scheme uses dynamic load balancing to compute primary and shared protection paths. The TAR performs dynamic restoration ordering the connections based on band granularity. The BSR uses EON\'s band squeezing feature to restore connections by means of the best effort or guaranteed bandwidth strategy, depending on the customer\'s service level agreement. IDS scheme concentrates the maximum possible number of shared slots in a given region of the spectrum. Performance of the algorithms are evaluated according to metrics: blocking probability, spectrum utilization rate, average number of hops and failure restoration rate. Computer simulations show that the use of the IDS scheme improves the performance of the investigated algorithms.

Politics and the Colorado River

This distinction has brought the Colorado more than its share of controversy, within states, between states and between nations. The Colorado River compact, whose purpose was to equitably apportion the waters between the upper and lower basins and to provide protection for the upper basin through water reservation, was ratified by all states except Arizona, in 1923. Arizona finally ratified it in 1944. The history of controversies and negotiation concerning the compact are outlined through the supreme court decision on march 9, 1964, which entitled California to 4.4 maf, Nevada to 0.3 maf and Arizona to 2.8 maf, of the first 7.5 maf available in the lower Colorado. Unfortunately, the court did not attempt to establish priorities in the event of shortage. The problem is complicated by an international treaty of 1944, guaranteeing Mexico 1.5 maf annually, except in years of unusual circumstances. Because Senator Connally of Texas was then chairman of the senate foreign relations committee and because the treaty allocated twice as much Colorado River water to Mexico as it was then using, it was argued that this treaty represented a tradeoff to Mexico, giving it less water from the Rio Grande in exchange for more water from the overburdened Colorado. Problems of inter-basin water transfer studies, uniform Colorado basin water quality standards and central Arizona project planning are discussed.

Physiographic Limitations Upon the Use of Southwestern Rivers

The physiographic and climatic reasons for this are discussed. To the east of the 100th meridian, rainfall is reliable and agriculture is stable; while to the west, there is a chronic deficit of water, droughts are frequent and lifestyles must be accordingly adjusted. Dam building results in greatly increased silting behind the dam in both the river and its tributaries and accelerated channel erosion below the dam. Total flow must also decrease due to withdrawals and increased evaporation from reservoirs. The correction of apparent errors in measuring the virgin flow of the Colorado River now indicates that this flow is about 15 maf/yr. Current legal allocations total 17.5 maf/yr of river water, including the central Arizona project (cap), which will withdraw 1.2 maf/yr. While the river is being dammed and overallocated beyond all reason, the water table is being mined at the alarming rate of 20 ft/yr. In central Arizona, it has dropped to about 250 ft below the surface, and even if all withdrawals ceased immediately, it would take many centuries of of desert rains before it would return to its former level of 50 ft. The cap water will cancel only about 1/2 of this overdraft annually. A glance at the phoenix area today shows that rain follows neither the farmers plow nor the subdividers bulldozer.

A Rational Water Policy for Desert Cities

The government can institute various policy changes to eliminate or reduce the imbalance between water supply and demand. Restrictions should be placed on water-use luxuries such as swimming pools, subdivision lakes, fountains, etc. Water pricing should be progressive; each unit of increased use above a reasonable minimum should be charged for at an increasing rate. Runoff from individual properties, homes, storage, and supermarkets should be minimized through the use of onsite recharge wells, and various collection methods should be initiated. A campaign to acquaint the general public with a new water policy must be inaugurated.

Management Alternatives for Santa Cruz Basin Groundwater

From the Proceedings of the 1978 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 14-15, 1978, Flagstaff, Arizona / Combined urban, agricultural, industrial and mining groundwater withdrawal from the Santa Cruz River Basin exceeds natural aquifer replenishment by 74,000 acre -feet annually. Four ameliorative water management alternatives are presented singly and in combination with one another. These alternatives are importing Colorado River water, exchanging treated effluent with mining and agricultural interests for groundwater, interbasin water transfer, and retiring farmlands for groundwater rights. These management philosophies are applicable to most economically emergent urban areas in arid and semiarid regions.
