Amateur travel films of the American Pacific, 1923-1975

Lu, Megan Hermida 07 September 2024 (has links)
This dissertation centers on amateur films produced by Americans traveling to Asia in the mid-twentieth century. I examine the style and content of these films and place them in conversation with industrially produced media to elucidate their distinct aesthetic and means of production. Examining the amateur travel films of both tourists and soldiers, I investigate to what extent American filmmakers absorbed commercial cinema's racialized construction of Asia and how, if at all, their films depart from or even undermine such constructions. I posit that while these films certainly reflect Hollywood's orientalism, their unpolished, unguided nature also offers limited space for historically underrepresented Asian communities to (re)present themselves. Further, these amateur travel films prove powerful artifacts for exploring contemporaneous American social relations, including early-twentieth century gender roles, the sexual identification and desire of wartime soldiers, and the disillusionment of the Vietnam era. Filmmakers under discussion include an American diplomat serving in China, several women educators, and a number of soldiers who served in WWII or the Korean War or the Vietnam War. Engaging with anthropologists, film scholars (particularly those interested in amateur and ethnographic filmmaking), and cultural historians, I seek to demonstrate the scholarly value of the amateur travel film, suggesting that its polysemy and distinctive style merit further analysis for us to deepen our historical understanding of these films and their makers, but also of the film form at issue and of the cultural image the U.S. held of Asia and the Pacific during the time under investigation. / 2026-09-06T00:00:00Z

Les créations dérivées comme modalité de l'engagement des publics médiatiques : le cas des fanfictions sur internet / Involving media audiences through derivative works : evidences from the fan fiction phenomenon ont he internet

François, Sébastien 30 September 2013 (has links)
This study deals with the reception of fictional works, when it materializes as “derivative works”, i.e. products made by active audiences, and seek the social factors explaining the shape took by these creations in a given context. If a lot of user generated contents now on the Internet –thanks to the digitalization of culture and the spread of ICT– shows that media products are more and more appropriated by amateurs, the specificity of these cultural practices and their continuity with older types of fictional involvements must be assessed: it will be exemplified through the case of fanfictions, also on a growing trend since the 2000s on the Web, that is texts, written by fans, which finish off, extend or correct original fictional works. Mixing cultural and media sociology with literary history, this dissertation suggests that fanfictions rest upon basic mechanisms linked to the reception and the circulation of fictional worlds, but always constrained by social, economic, media and legal factors. Based on the study of a thousand of fanfictions, observations from one of their main archives, and comparisons with literary successes which also generated derivatives texts, this research first discusses fanfictions’ past, extending it further than the 1960s when they were published in fanzines, but distinguishing it from the whole literature’s past. The inquiry then reveals how fanfictions are still the result of a collective production and organization, in which the broadcasting medium, the interactions between fans and with creative industries construct their format and content.

The Best Bang for your Bonus: Identifying Over and Undervalued Prospects in the Major League Baseball Draft

Simpson, Theron 01 January 2016 (has links)
This study evaluates the relationship between different types of player prospects selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft and their signing bonuses relative to where in the draft they were selected. In a perfect market differences in prospects’ statistical likelihoods of reaching the major leagues should be reflected in their relative signing bonus. The research reported here found that college players, regardless of position, have a higher likelihood of reaching the major leagues than high school players but this is not reflected in their signing bonus indicating that college players continue to be undervalued in the draft. Outfielders were found to reach the major leagues at a significantly lower rate than other players in other positions but are not penalized financially for the decreased likelihood of reaching the major leagues indicating an overvaluation of outfielders.

DEVELOPMENT OF A BASELINE TELEMETRY SYSTEM FOR THE CUBESAT PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA

Eatchel, A. L., Fevig, R., Cooper, C., Gruenenfelder, J., Wallace, J. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / A telemetry system has been developed at the University of Arizona to serve as a baseline for future CubeSat designs. Two satellites are scheduled for launch in November of 2002. One features a beacon that operates autonomously of all but the power system and can independently deploy the antennas. The other will test the performance of new semiconductor devices in low earth orbit. Sensors will monitor voltages, currents (from which attitude and tumble rate can be derived), received signal strength and a distribution of temperatures. The CubeSat’s architecture, operating system, sensors, telemetry format and link budget are discussed.

Pruchová, Tereza January 2013 (has links)
The diploma work deals with the transformation process of amateur theatre into the regular professional company in Příbram. The main interest is given to the period beginning with the foundation of official amateur societies after 1867. The first part of the work deals with amateur societies acting in the area of Příbram. A sort of transition from amateur to pro-fessional theatre is described in the chapter about the Society for Building the Town Theatre at Příbram. The second part of the work covers the beginning and later destiny of the profes-sional scene in Příbram. For a better idea on the situation of Příbram theatre groups a general development of both the amateur and the professional theatre is drawn up for comparison. Plan de negocios campeonato de futbol universitario femenino Región Metropolitana

Roa Aguirre, Carolina January 2013 (has links)
