The aim of this study was to analyze the nitrogen balance in grow-out ponds of Macrobrachium amazonicum, characterizing the main inputs and outputs of this nutrient. The experiment was conducted in 12 natural rectangular ponds, with a randomized complete block experimental design (RBD) in a factorial (2x2) with three replications. The factors tested were the nocturnal aeration (present or absent) and use of artificial substrates (present or absent). To calculate the input of nitrogen in the culture the total nitrogen that came through allochthonous food, supplied by juveniles, and by fertilizer and water supply was quantified. To calculate the nitrogen removed from the culture was quantified the nitrogen accumulated in the prawns at harvest, in the matter adhered to the substrate, in the sediment and the nitrogen eliminated in the effluent in harvest and N2 gas form loose from the sediment. The allochthonous food accounted for 57% of the nitrogen that entered the system, while the sediment has accumulated about 45% of the nitrogen added in the culture. A maximum of 13.5% nitrogen contained in the allochthonous food was incorporated by prawns, indicating that it is necessary to study an improvement in this embodiment. The use of nocturnal aeration elevated the input of nitrogen by allochthonous food, promoted the accumulation of nitrogen in the water column and consequently in the harvest effluent. Using artificial substrates for periphyton development can enhance the uptake of nitrogen added during cultivation, and reduce the accumulation of nitrogen in the effluent generated by the aerator

We evaluated the cellular profile of hepatopancreas and production performance. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RBD), in a 2x2 factorial design with three replications. The factors tested were the type of food (natural + allochthonous and only natural) and stocking density (10 and 20 indivíduos.m-2). Juveniles of M. amazonicum were cultured for 8 months in twelve 0.01 ha earthen ponds. Every month, 30 animals were collected from each pond for biometrics analysis, among these five animals were randomly taken for analysis of the structural characteristics of the hepatopancreas. Survival at the end of the farming did not differ significantly between treatments and was within the expected range for extended farming with the same specie. It was observed that the animals grew evenly among the treatments until the 4th month of cultivation. After that month, the food and density significantly influenced this growth. This suggests that the life strategy of the specie, in an attempt to reduce intraspecific competition in the absence of food, is to decrease the growth rather than increase mortality. Moreover, the use of allochthonous food is not necessary until the 4th month of grow-out. The maximum capacity of biomass supported by the ponds, without allochthonous food, was approximately 300 kg ha-1. From this period we observed a reduction in animal growth. The highest productivity was obtained in the presence of allochthonous food and density of 20 ind.m-2. The structural characteristics of the hepatopancreas of the animals treated with only natural food had cellular profile similar to that of characteristic undergoing starvation

Estudo da formação da bacia hidrográfica do rio Amazonas através da modelagem numérica de processos tectônicos e sedimentares / Study of the formation of the Amazon river basin through numerical modeling of tectonic and sedimentary processes.

Tacio Cordeiro Bicudo 08 May 2017 (has links)
The Amazon hydrographic basin is the largest in the world, covering 6 × 106 km2 of northern South America. Its longest channel, with almost 7000 km, brings sediment from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean, in brazilian equatorial coast. Despite the scientific efforts, the timing of origin of this hydrographic basin is still debated, as well as the processes that guided its evolution and shaped the landscape in this region. In my research, I used an adaptation of the numerical model developed by Sacek (2014) to study the landscape evolution of the north of South America, focusing on the establishment of the Amazon River as a transcontinental river. The numerical model accounts for the contributions of orogeny, climate, isostasy and flexure of the lithosphere, and surface processes (erosion and deposition of sediments). I performed dozens of experiments, testing a range of values for the different parameters of the model, and I was able to reproduce, in many aspects, the evolution of landscape in the region, as hypothesized by others researchers. I also observed in my results a changing in drainage pattern, that corresponds to the onset of the Amazon River. Furthermore, it was predicted by the simulations, at the moment of the onset of the Amazon River, a great increase in sedimentary deposition at the Amazon Fan, simultaneously with a fall in sedimentary deposition at the Orinoco mouth. However, in the simulations, the moment of the onset of the Amazon River is very sensitive to changes in the initial topography of the model. I also tested the influence of crustal thickening rate in the Andes, precipitation rate, and resistance to erosion of sediments of the model, in the sedimentation pattern of the region. I concluded that an increase in precipitation rate in the model can significantly alter the rate of deposition at the region of Amazons mouth and in others sedimentary basins in the model. However, an increase in crustal thickening or precipitation rate in the Andes does not expressively change the rate of deposition at the region of Amazons mouth, but changes occur at foreland basins and at Solimoes Basin.

The Amazon hydrometeorology: climatology, variability and links to changes in weather patterns

Fernandes, Katia de Avila 27 July 2009 (has links)
Using ERA40 and independent observations, I assess how well Amazon surface water budget is estimated. ERA40 basin wide annual precipitation (P) agrees with observations showing an underestimation of 10%, whereas runoff (R) is underestimated by a larger margin (~25%). Observed residual of precipitation and runoff (P-R) is better estimated by ERA40 P-R than actual ET which includes soil moisture nudging. Nudging is necessary during the dry season to produce realistic ET and compensate for low soil moisture recharge during the wet season. Insufficient recharge may be caused by: underestimation of rainfall amount and intensity; a shallow root layer in the model that does not represent the deep soil water reservoir of the Amazonian forest. The physical links between changes in wet season onset and synoptic scale systems are investigated in the second part of my work. A delayed wet season onset is consistent with a decreasing number of cold air incursion (CAI) days in southern Amazon during 1979-2001. CAI variability in southern Amazon is related to SST in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans. The first mode of co-variability shows that during El Nio (La Nia) a strong (weak) subtropical jet stream over South America is related to decreased (increased) CAI days during SON. The second mode shows warm western Indian Ocean also related to strong subtropical jet stream. The absence a well defined subpolar jet stream, favors the northward displacement of transient waves into central South America, but shows little response in southern Amazon. CAI days reconstructed from the first and second modes do not present any significant trend in southern Amazon. CAI days reconstructed from the third mode of co-variability reproduces SON observed trend. This mode describes negative (positive) anomalies in CAI days associated with cold (warm) SST anomalies, anomalous wavetrain in the tropical Pacific and Walker Cell displacement that are unfavorable (favorable) to the incursion of CAI into southern Amazon. This mode's temporal evolution correlates with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), suggesting that its recent gradual signal shift reflected on the interannual response of southern Pacific atmospheric patterns, hence on the behavior of transients propagation.

Land-use change in the Neotropics : regional-scale predictors of deforestation and local effects on carbon storage and tree-species diversity

Kirby, Kathryn January 2004 (has links)
Land-use change, and in particular tropical deforestation, is the leading cause of species extinctions globally, and is the second most important source of CO2 emissions after fossil fuel combustion. I examine two policy-relevant questions that relate to tropical deforestation and land use change: (1) At regional scales, what biophysical and infrastructure-related factors are associated with deforestation? and (2) At a local scale, what are some of the impacts of land use change on above- and below-ground carbon stocks and on tree-species richness? The first question was examined for the Brazilian Amazon through spatially-explicit correlation analyses of deforestation and a series of predictor variables that included highways and roads, annual rainfall, dry season length, soil characteristics, site accessibility, and population density. The proximity of a site to roads and highways was the strongest predictor of deforestation, with more accessible sites more likely to be deforested. Dry season length was also a strong, positive predictor of deforestation. The results suggest that current plans to expand road infrastructure in Amazonia will have a significant impact on the forests of the areas transected. / The second question was examined in the context of a 3,198 ha area in Eastern Panama that is managed collectively by an Indigenous Embera community.

From rivers to natural gas: The influence of allochthonous inputs on marine nitrogen fixation and the carbon cycle

Weber, Sarah C. 07 January 2016 (has links)
The Western Tropical North Atlantic (WTNA) was once thought to be a net source of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to the atmosphere, but recent studies have shown that this Amazon River influenced region may actually act as a net sink for CO₂. During a 2010 research cruise to the WTNA, we characterized the impact of the Amazon River on offshore diazotrophy (N₂-fixation) and the resulting stimulation of biological carbon export from surface waters. Through the delivery of phosphate- and silicate-replete waters to the nitrogen (N) limited surface waters of the WTNA, the aging Amazon River plume promotes the growth of diatom-diazotoph associations (DDAs). Regions supporting large DDA blooms were associated with increased pCO₂ and DIC drawdown in the surface waters, reflecting the net export of carbon from the mixed layer. The existence of this biologically mediated linkage between the C and N cycles in productive surface waters is well known, but we have only recently discovered a stimulatory relationship in deep waters between oil/gas release and N₂-fixation. This association was first observed after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 and we again saw evidence for it in the days following the Hercules 265 natural gas blowout. This blowout event was characterized by the release of an unknown quantity of natural gas into the shelf waters of the Northern Gulf of Mexico, but we detected a response from the marine microbial community within days. We observed a significant drawdown of dissolved oxygen and found biogeochemical evidence for the incorporation of methane-carbon into the food web, along with a modest stimulation of N₂-fixation. The episodic nature of anthropogenic blowouts makes them difficult to study, so we use cold seeps in the Gulf of Mexico as natural analogues. Interestingly, we have measured both methane oxidation and N₂-fixation at depth above some of the more active seeps. Using NanoSIMS analyses, we have taken the first steps towards physically characterizing the organisms utilizing these metabolisms. It appears that different organisms are carrying out these processes, with CH₄-assimilation occurring primarily in individual particles or small aggregates, whereas N₂-fixtion was associated with larger, sulfur-containing aggregates. Continued NanoSIMS work in combination with the use of microbial ID techniques will help to further characterize these unique deepwater diazotrophs.

Cruzeiros de luxo no Rio Amazonas: da regulação ao uso corporativo do território / Luxury cruises on the Amazon river: from regulation to corporate use of the territory.

Thais Zucheto de Menezes 26 March 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the present work is to analyze the luxury river cruises that navigate the Amazon River, considering the normative bases related to its performances in the Brazilian territory, as well as the corporate use they make of the territory. For this purpose, the locations of Macapá, Belém, Santarém, Alter do Chão, Boca de Valéria, Parintins and Manaus were empirical bases of the analysis, since they are the places where the mentioned cruises stop along the Amazon River. As a methodological procedure a bibliographic survey of secondary sources and a fieldwork was carried out by all the aforementioned localities. In this fieldwork, researches were carried out in universities and in public and private organizations with direct or indirect relation with the luxury river cruises in the region. Due to the object of study being the luxury cruises, a survey of information about the luxury market was also carried out, as the cruise sector is segmented, like the luxury market. After this survey, the analysis of the navigation of the luxury river cruises in the Amazon River was carried out, involving cruise companies, port entities and state tourist offices. We sought to demonstrate how the division of labor and the performance of luxury river cruise companies in the Amazon River occur. By working cooperatively with one another, connection networks are produced in the territory that unites them in a particular logic. The companie\'s territorial division is stated as it constitutes its territorial base of existence and the territory starts to be occupied according to diverse scalar logics (global, national and intra-urban).The privatization of the territory from the relationship between the companies occurs with the use of public resources, made possible by the present engineering systems. We have observed that the formation of an oligopoly and the corporate use of the Amazon River occur, especially in the places where the ships stop. The companies act in a seasonal way, identified in the form of seasons. This seasonality is linked to corporate strategies that analyze cruises, tourist demand, logistics costs and the size of ships, which must meet the technical specifications of the ports and places they travel. In addition, the companies promote a selective circulation, demand improvements in the port infrastructures and the selectivity of the localities where they operate.
