Text in German / The present dissertation considers the historical and theological foundations of radical evangelicalism
and puts it in the context of theologies which influenced it and are similar to it. It will be demonstrated
that the evangelicals are enriched by radical evangelicalism - an evangelical basic concept with elements
of anabaptism, the social gospel, liberation theology and the ecumencial theologies. Thus it will
be demonstrated that radical theology is genuinely evangelical, yet is capable of overcoming the one
sidedness of western evangelical theology. Special attention is given to the contributions of radicals
from North America as well as from Latin America since they are of considerable importance to radical
evangelicalism.
The aim of the dissertation is to present radical evangelicalism, to critically evaluate it, and to make it
profitable to the European evangelical scene. The first section names the sources from which radical
theology flowed. The second section reviews the historical development of radical evangelicalism. It
will be demonstrated that, in the thirty years of its existence, radical evangelicalism has become a
significant factor within the worldwide evangelical movement. The third section presents the fundamental
characteristics of radical theology within a selection of themes. It demonstrates that the radicals
have confronted the evangelical movement with a transforming theory of mission, which shows itself
to be relevant for today's pressing problems. The fourth section describes the social action of radical
evangelicalism and demonstrates that the energetic theology of the radicals is in fact based on a compelling
spirituality. The fifth section records the results of the investigation and presents conclusions
for praxis and further theological study. / Die voriiegende Dissertation erfasst die geschichtlichen und theologischen Grundlinien des radikalen
Evangelikalismus und stellt ihn in den Kontext ahnlicher und ihn beeinflussender Theologien. Es wird
aufgezeigt, dass der radikale Evangelikalismus eine evangelikale Grundkonzeption mit Elementen des
Anabaptismus, des Social Gospel, der Befreiungstheologie und der Theologien im Umfeld des Okumenischen
Rates der Kirchen bereichert Dabei wird deutlich, dass die radikale Theologie genuin evangelikal
ist, die Einseitigkeiten der westlichen evangelikalen Theologie aber zu uberwinden vermag.
Besondere Aufmerksamkeit ist den Beitragen radikaler Nord- und Lateinamerikaner gewidmet, da
diese den radikalen Evangelikalismus wesentlich gepragt haben.
Ziel ist es, den radikalen Evangelikalismus darzustellen, kritisch zu wiirdigen und fur die europaische
evangelikale Szene fruchtbar zu machen. Der erste Teil nennt die Quellen, aus denen sich die radikale
Theologie speist. Der zweite Teil zeichnet den geschichtlichen Werdegang des radikalen Evangelikalismus
nach. Es wird nachgewiesen, dass der radikale Evangelikalismus in den dreissig Jahren seines
Bestehens zu einem bestimmenden Faktor in der weltweiten evangelikalen Bewegung geworden ist.
Der dritte Teil stellt die Grundzuge der radikalen Theologie mittels ausgewahlter Themen dar. Er zeigt
auf, dass die Radikalen die evangelikale Bewegung mit einer transformatorischen Missionstheorie
konfrontiert haben, die relevant fur die drangenden Probleme der Gegenwart ist. Der vierte Teil stellt
die soziale Aktion des radikalen Evangelikalismus dar und zeigt auf, dass die energische Theologie
der Radikalen im Grande genommen zur Tat driingende Spirituality ist. Der funfte Teil halt die Ergebnisse
der Untersuchung fest und zieht Folgerungen fur die Praxis und das weitere theologische

L’essor du protestantisme évangélique en France est un laboratoire d’analyse des effets de la mondialisation sur les identités religieuses. Alors que leurs origines remontent souvent à la Réforme protestante en Europe elle-même, les évangéliques français font partie aujourd’hui d’un mouvement à dimensions mondiales où les Américains jouent un rôle de premier rang. Quelle influence ces derniers exercent-ils réellement en France? Pour les évangéliques français, quels sont les enjeux de l’association avec leurs coreligionnaires aux États-Unis? Nous cherchons à fournir des réponses en nous appuyant sur une étude de terrain des églises évangéliques dans l’est de la France. Il en ressort que les États-Unis exercent effectivement une certaine influence, mais que celle-ci n’est ni prépondérante ni uniforme. Le plus souvent, lorsque les églises françaises établissent des liens avec des Américains, elles le font en fonction de leurs propres besoins dans le champ social français. Ainsi les évangéliques français ne sont pas de simples récepteurs d’influence, mais des acteurs sociaux à part entière. / The growth of evangelical Protestantism in France is a laboratory for analyzing the effects of globalization on religious identities. Even though their origins can often be traced to the Protestant Reformation in Europe itself, French evangelicals are today part of a world-wide movement where Americans play a leading role. What influence do American evangelicals really exert in France? What is at stake for French evangelicals who associate with their American coreligionists? Our study of evangelical churches in the east of France shows that the United States does indeed exert a certain influence, but it is neither preponderant nor uniform in nature. Most of the time, when French churches develop ties to Americans, they do so in function of their own needs within the French social field. French evangelicals are thus more than just receptors of influence, but social actors in the fullest sense.

An investigation into the nature of a viable pentecostal hermeneuticClark, Mathew S. 11 1900 (has links)
Current pentecostal scholarship is attempting to articulate pentecostal theological distinctives.
For hermeneutics, this involves both a descriptive and a prescriptive approach to the use of the
Bible. The descriptive approach appraises the historical roots of pentecostalism, which include the
Wesleyan I Holiness movement, the radical Reformation, Tertullian and Montanism, and
earliest charismatic communities. These understood Christian Scripture as guidelines to a Way
of behaviour and testimony, rather than a source-book of doctrine. This 'alternative history'
experienced the Enlightenment on a different level to protestantism and fundamentalism. Many
of the concerns of historical church theology and hermeneutics during the last centuries are thus
not always shared by pentecostals. The choice is: articulate a distinctive pentecostal
hermeneutic, or 'borrow' from non-pentecostal theology.
The prescriptive approach first investigates some of the latter options: some identify closely
with conservative evangelical hermeneutics. Others prefer the political hermeneutic of the
socio-political contextual theologies. The burgeoning Faith Movement has influenced many
pentecostals. Some pentecostal scholars show interest in 'post-modern' literary theory.
A viable pentecostal hermeneutic might be prescribed as follows: It respects the demands of
scientific method, not ignoring the concerns of contemporary hermeneutical philosophy and
literary theory. It highlights specifically pentecostal concerns: the teleology of any encounter
with the text; historical continuity with the early church groups; implementation, demonstration and realisation of the literal intent of the text; the role of biblical narrative in defining
experience of God; and the authority granted ongoing revelation via the charismata in the light of the canon.
Application of a pentecostal hermeneutic would emphasise an holistic understanding of
Scripture, the crucial role of the charismatic community, awareness of issues in the ongoing
hermeneutical debate, and the need for the interpreter's personal ongoing charismatic
experience. In a distinctively pentecostal exegesis of 1 Corinthians 14 prophecy is discussed
as normal liturgical activity, as a confrontation of outsiders and unbelievers, in terms of its
regulation, and in the light of spiritual discernment / Biblical and Ancient Studies / Th. D. (New Testament)
