The survey A methodological theoretical pathway for reading “The tinderbox” and “The snow queen” by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), based on the concept of language understood as a process of human interaction and the act of reading, as a complex activity, involving not only grammatical and semantic aspects, but pragmatic and dialogic ones. This theoretical concept was adopted since it agrees with the goals of this investigation: 1) to analyze the textual and thematic structure of two H. C. Andersen’s tales, “The tinderbox” and “The snow queen”, selected from the corpus of his work, noticing similarities regarding the theme, subject, message; plot; time, space and place; the narrator and narrative focus and the characters; 2) to define criteria for the choice of a book or a short story from children's literature; 3) suggest activities that may contribute to the instruction of children’s literature in classrooms. The focus of the study was defined in relation to the narrative/classic text of children's literature. The activities developed undertaken were of bibliographic nature and accompanied the entire process of investigation. Finally, the fact of reading is one of the major problems experienced by school and by society as a whole, such as those relating to functional illiteracy, non-formation of the reader and lack of understanding of literary texts, justifies a research that will contribute to overcoming the problems experienced by school, when it comes to reading.

The research The ugly duckling ' and The nightingale and the emperor of China ', by Hans Christian Andersen: the children literature in the 4th class, elementary school is ruled in the conception of understanding language as a process of human interaction and the reading, as a complex activity, involving aspects not only semantic, but cultural, ideological, philosophical and phonetic. These theoretical conceptions were adopted by two reasons: for being in agreement with what is proposed in the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais de Língua Portuguesa (2001) and with the objectives of the investigation: 1) to guide the teachers, whom will participate of the research, how to work with the stories of H.C. Andersen in 4th grade the elementary school; 2) to notice if the teacher works with The ugly duckling and The nightingale and the emperor of China and how they develope activities with these fairy tales; 3) to plan and to guide a reading work and production of texts which refers to them and 4) to identify, through a questionnaire, the contributions of this work in related to changing in a pedagogic practice which includes the work with children literatur in classroom. The focus of the study was coming up in relation to: narrative text, classics of the children literature, Hans Christian Andersen and the stories: The ugly duckling and The nightingale and the emperor of China. The research activities were defined by the bibliographical reading and for the field research developed in a public school in Presidente Prudente-SP. The option for the stories happened mainly because: The ugly duckling is one of the most well-known stories by H. C. Andersen by Brazilian children and The nightingale and the emperor of China because takes part of the collection Literatura em minha Casa and it is not wellknown as The ugly duckling by the Brazilian children.

Hans Christian Andersen's romantic imagination : exploring eighteenth and nineteenth century romantic conceptualisations of the imagination in selected fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen

Greyvensteyn, Annette 07 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 119-131) / Text in English with summaries in English and Afrikaans / There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. This follows the philosophy of German Naturphilosophie, as well as that of English romantics like Coleridge and Wordsworth, for whom nature functions as a portal to the spiritual world. The concept of the “sublime” underpins this philosophy. If nature is viewed through an imaginative, instead of an empirical lens, it becomes the means by which the temporal world can be transcended. It is a message of hope and as such is in keeping with Andersen’s self professed calling as visionary who uses his art to uplift mankind. In this he is the ultimate romantic hero or outsider who, while standing on the periphery of society, observes its shortcomings and feels called upon to show the way to a better world. / English Studies / M.A. (English)
