Design considerations and implementation of a RF front-end for CDMA adaptive array system.

Recent studies have shown that considerable system capacity gains in mobile communication systems can be obtained by exploiting the use of antenna arrays at the base station. Unfortunately, these studies make little mention of practical issues concerning implementation. It is thus one of the objectives of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Radio Access Technologies at the University of Natal to investigate the development of a widehand CDMA adaptive array transceiver using Alcatel software radios as the transceiver platforms. Such a transceiver system can be subdivided into three major sections: RF front-end, signal digitization and baseband processing stages. Due to the enormity of such an undertaking, the research outlined in this thesis is focused on (but not isolated to) some aspects of the RF front-end implementation for the proposed system. The work in this thesis can be catergorized into two sections. The first section focuses on the theoretical and practical (or implementation) aspects of antenna arrays and beamforming. In particular, it is evident that digital (rather than analogue) beamforming in a multi user environment, is a more viable option from both a cost and implementation standpoint. The second section evaluates the impact of RF component noise and local oscillator generated phase noise in a DS-CDMA system. The implementation of a RP front-end for a BPSK transceiver also forms part of the work in this section. LO phase noise and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) measurements are performed on this system to support relevant theory. By use of the HP89410A phase noise measurement utility and the phase noise theory developed in this thesis, a quantitative phase noise comparison between two frequency sources used in the system were made. EVM measurement results conclusively verified the importance of an LNA in the system. It has also been shown that the DS-CDMA simulated system exhibits superior performance to the implemented BPSK system. Furthermore, an EVM troubleshooting methodology is introduced to identify possible impairments within the BPSK receiver RF front-end. However, this thesis was written with the intention of bridging the gap between the theoretical and practical implementation aspects of RP wireless communication systems. Signal Detection for Overloaded Receivers

In this work wireless communication systems with multiple co-channel signals present at the receiver are considered. One of the major challenges in the development of such systems is the computational complexity required for the detection of the transmitted signals. This thesis addresses this problem and develops reduced complexity algorithms for the detection of multiple co-channel signals in receivers with multiple antennas. The signals are transmitted from either a single user employing multiple transmit antennas, from multiple users or in the most general case by a mixture of the two. The receiver is assumed to be overloaded in that the number of transmitted signals exceeds the number of receive antennas. Joint Maximum Likelihood (JML) is the optimum detection algorithm which has exponential complexity in the number of signals. As a result, detection of the signals of interest at the receiver is challenging and infeasible in most practical systems. The thesis presents a framework for the detection of multiple co-channel signals in overloaded receivers. It proposes receiver structures and two list-based signal detection algorithms that allow for complexity reduction compared to the optimum detector while being able to maintain near optimum performance. Complexity savings are achieved by first employing a linear preprocessor at the receiver to reduce the effect of Co-Channel Interference (CCI) and second, by using a detection algorithm that searches only over a subspace of the transmitted symbols. Both algorithms use iterative processing to extract ordered lists of the most likely transmit symbols. Soft information can be obtained from the detector output list and can then be used by error control decoders. The first algorithm named Parallel Detection with Interference Estimation (PD-IE) considers the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. It relies on a spatially reduced search over subsets of the transmitted symbols in combination with CCI estimation. Computational complexity under overload is lower than that of JML. Performance results show that PD-IE achieves near optimum performance in receivers with Uniform Circular Array (UCA) and Uniform Linear Array (ULA) antenna geometries. The second algorithm is referred to as List Group Search (LGS) detection. It is applied to overloaded receivers that operate in frequency-flat multipath fading channels. The List Group Search (LGS) detection algorithm forms multiple groups of the transmitted symbols over which an exhaustive search is performed. Simulation results show that LGS detection provides good complexity-performance tradeoffs under overload. A union bound for group-wise and list-based group-wise symbol detectors is also derived. It provides an approximation to the error performance of such detectors without the need for simulation. Moreover, the bound can be used to determine some detection parameters and tradeoffs. Results show that the bound is tight in the high Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR) region.

Metamaterial-Inspired CMOS Tunable Microwave Integrated Circuits For Steerable Antenna Arrays

This thesis presents the design of radio-frequency (RF) tunable active inductors (TAIs) with independent inductance (L) and quality factor (Q) tuning capability, and their application in the design of RF tunable phase shifters and directional couplers for wireless transceivers. The independent L and Q tuning is achieved using a modided gyrator-C architecture with an additional feedback element. A general framework is developed for this Q- enhancement technique making it applicable to any gyrator-C based TAI. The design of a 1.5V, grounded, 0.13um CMOS TAI is presented. The proposed circuit achieves a 0.8nH-11.7nH tuning range at 2GHz, with a peak-Q in excess of 100. Furthermore, printed and integrated versions of tunable positive/negative refractive index (PRI /NRI) phase shifters, are presented in this thesis. The printed phase shifters are comprised of a microstrip transmission-line (TL) loaded with varactors and TAIs, which, when tuned together, extends the phase tuning range and produces a low return loss. In contrast, the integrated phase shifters utilize lumped L-C sections in place of the TLs, which allows for a single MMIC implementation. Detailed experimental results are presented in the thesis. As an example, the printed design achieves a phase of -40 to +34 degrees at 2.5GHz. As another application for the TAI, a reconfigurable CMOS directional coupler is presented in this thesis. The proposed coupler allows electronic control over the coupling coefficient, and the operating frequency while insuring a low return loss and high isolation. Moreover, it allows switching between forward and backward operation. These features, combined together, would allow using the coupler as a duplexer to connect a transmitter and a receiver to a single antenna. Finally, a planar electronically steerable patch array is presented. The 4-element array uses the tunable PRI/NRI phase shifters to center its radiation about the broadside direction. This also minimizes the main beam squinting across the operating bandwidth. The feed network of the array uses impedance transformers, which allow identical interstage phase shifters. The proposed antenna array is capable of continuously steering its main beam from -27 to +22 degrees of the broadside direction with a gain of 8.4dBi at 2.4GHz.

Achieving near-optimal MIMO capacity in a rank-deficient LOS environment

In the field of wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, remarkable capacity enhancements may be achieved in certain environments relative to single-antenna systems. In a non-line of sight (NLOS) environment with rich multipath, the capacity potential is typically very good, but in a line of sight (LOS) environment with a high Rician K-factor, the capacity improvement may be severely limited or almost disappear. The objective of the research described in this dissertation has been to develop a more thorough understanding of the capacity limitations of MIMO in a LOS environment and explore methods to improve that capacity. It is known that for a LOS link with a given range, an optimal antenna configuration, which usually involves large antenna spacings, can be computed to maximize the capacity. A method is here proposed for achieving near-maximum MIMO capacity in LOS environments with suboptimal array configurations. Suboptimal arrays may include small antenna spacings and/or arrays rotated off normal. The method employs single-antenna full-duplex, amplify-and-forward relays, otherwise known as "wireless repeaters." We have designated this concept repeater-assisted capacity enhancement (RACE) for MIMO. Potential applications include tower-mounted or building-top cellular backhaul and high-speed wireless bridge links (explored in Chapter 5) and ground-to-air sensor network backhaul links and base-to-mobile links in a cellular configuration (explored in Chapter 7). We have analyzed this concept in simulation for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links and have found the following critical parameters for system design and deployment: orientation, antenna spacing, and antenna patterns of the transmit (TX)/receive (RX) MIMO arrays; and position, noise figure, TX/RX isolation, and antenna patterns associated with the repeater(s). Simulation results for an n[subscript R] xn[subscript T] MIMO link demonstrate nearly a factor of n=min{n[subscript R], n[subscript T] } improvement in capacity relative to a single-input single-output (SISO) link using n-1 optimally placed wireless repeaters supporting the link. Other portions of analysis presented include the development of a determinant-based metric for capacity (D) and an exploration of upper and lower bounds of capacity as a function of D. The position of repeaters is analyzed theoretically and a metric introduced based on D intended to quickly and intuitively determine optimal positions for repeaters assisting a given MIMO link based on TX/RX node steering vectors.

The design and analysis of a rotman lens with reduced conjugate-port coupling

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This project comprises the design, analysis, and construction of a Rotman lens with reduced conjugate-port coupling. The Rotman lens is a beam-forming network, used in wide-angle scanners to feed an antenna array. The scanning operation is based on optics and is therefore frequency invariant, a desirable feature of the Rotman lens compared to other beam-forming networks which employ phase shifters. The antenna array is connected to the lens's array ports via transmission lines. These array ports lie on the array contour which is designed so that a signal incident onto the antenna array will propagate into the lens and focus at a particular point. The position of this focal point depends on the signals direction of arrival at the array. Ports are placed on these focal points to feed and receive signals. Bootlace lenses allow up to four focal points for linear arrays whereas the Rotman lens is designed for three foci. Scanners usually require to scan many beam-widths, thus ports are employed along a focal arc which intersect these foci. Inter-focal ports do not focus perfectly and result in phase errors distributed across the array aperture. The derivation of three and four foci lenses is provided. There are several degrees of freedom at the designer's disposal, the e ect which these available parameters have on the lens geometry and phase errors is investigated. The waveguide implementa- tion of these lenses is examined, in which we use vertically polarised horns as feed ports and coaxial probes as array ports. Some designs of Rotman lenses published in literature show excess mutual cou- pling between symmetrically opposed feed ports. Using a model which approximates the array contour as a re ecting wall, we show that this is due to the re ected energy focusing on conjugate ports. It is identi ed that Rotman lenses designed for mini- mum phase errors will have near maximum conjugate-port coupling. Two Rotman lenses have been designed at 3; 5GHz for ve feed ports, eleven elements, and up to 30 scan angles. The rst is designed for minimum phase errors, and the second for the defocusing of the re ected energy from the focal arc. Simulations show up to a 10dB reduction in conjugate-port coupling for the second lens with a negligible degradation in performance from the phase errors. Measurements show that the re ected energy is spread between the feed ports as expected, compared to the focusing at a single port of the traditional Rotman lens. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie projek behels die ontwerp, analise en konstruksie van 'n Rotmanlens met verminderde simmetries oorstaande poort koppeling. Simulasies toon tot 10 dB vermindering in koppeling tussen simmetries oorstaande poorte vir die tweede lens met weglaatbare werkverrigting verswakking as gevolg van fasefoute. Metings toon dat die weerkaatsde energie, soos verwag, versprei word tussen die voerpoorte vergeleke met energie gefokus in 'n enkele poort soos by die tradisionele Rotman lens.
