A \'restauração republicana\' de Augusto: discurso romano, alteridade oriental e teatrocracia política / The \'republican restoration\' of Augustus: roman speech, eastern otherness and political teatrocracia

Giacomo, Luiz Henrique Souza de 24 April 2015 (has links)
This reflective exercise aims to analyze the political role performed by Caesar Augustus during the construction, consolidation and the legitimacy of the political system of the Roman Principality. We will take as analytical basis the discourses and actions of Augustus in the Roman political scene on behalf of restoration of the Republic. Therefore, we propose to board the way how the Prince appropriated the trick of construction of stereotypes of his rivals, Marc Antony and Cleopatra, in order to raise his own position in the Roman political scene. The way he used speeches of me and other permeates our gaze, especially concerning the Eastern world that served as an element in a discursive and practical plan to defamation his rivals and their presentation as a threat to the Roman Republic, which he intended to safeguard and raise the best times.

The function of imagery in Antony and Cleopatra

Loveall, James Sebree 01 January 1949 (has links) (PDF)
The modern scholar attempting any detailed analysis of imagery in the poetry of Shakespeare may well proceed with caution. The lack of a clear and definite statement of terms, the unwillingness to come first to grips with the problem of definition before proceeding with that of analysis may produce pitfalls for the unwary; and although modern studies - especially those of Miss Caroline Spurgeon and her followers - have cast much light upon Shakespeare’s use of imagery, they do not altogether escape the charge of carelessness. Much work remains to be donel and the need for a reconsideration of the work already accomplished, together with a careful re-analysis of the function of imagery in the text of Shakespeare itself, is unquestionable. Herein, then, we have the purpose as well as the justification of the present study. The method of the study will involve: (A) the careful counting and listing of all the images in a mature Shakespearean tragedy; and, (B) the classification of these images according to what appears to be their technical function in the drama itself.

William S. Burroughs et le cinéma : expérimentations, présences, contaminations / William Burroughs and cinema : experimentations, presences, contamination

Clerc, Adrien 12 November 2015 (has links)
This work is an exhaustive study of William S. Burroughs' interest in cinema. Burroughs, in collaboration with Antony Balch, produced between 1961 and 1972 a series of experimental short films with radical editing and visual styles. These widely ignored films are an essential part of experimental cinema. Their study highlights the evolution of the author's political and aesthetic vision, close to those of Guy Debord or Gilles Deleuze. Burroughs also worked as an actor. The analysis of his cinematographic apparitions is linked to their relation to Burroughs' written work and its biographical aspects: the writer deconstructs the characters he plays in the same way as he deconstructs the mise-en-scène.A set of films, which can loosely be said to be adaptations, are another important part of the corpus of this study. These works, in a relation to the written word based on reproduction, shift or blow-out, produce original cinematographic images. This study is completed with a flash-forward to Burroughs' influence on three important north-american filmmakers: David Cronenberg, Gus Van Sant and David Lynch. These three authors reinvest Burroughs' work within the framework of their own production, focusing on the apparition of the voice, the link between visual signature and the notion of presence or the shattering of a conventional narrative.Linking experimentations, presences and contaminations of the writer in the cinematographic art, this thesis aims to rehabilitate this part of Burroughs' work.

Leaving the world for the sake of the world : Coptic monastic mission in the fourth and fifth centuries

Youkeem, Sameeh Helmy 06 1900 (has links)
Christian monasticism originated in Egypt and then spread to the rest of the Christian church. Coptic monks made a significant contribution to Christian theology and spirituality through their distinctive approach to the life of faith. This study by a Coptic monk analysis Coptic missionary spirituality as it flowered in the fourth and fifth centuries. Chapter 2 introduces the three main types of Coptic monasticism and the key figures in each of the three types. Chapter 3 describes the centripetal dimension of their mission, indicating how they attracted a wide.variety of people to a committed Christian life through their holiness, simplicity and humility. Chapter 4 discusses their "outreaching" mission of love: their preaching in harmony with the culture of people, their concern for the poor and oppressed, their healing miracles and exorcisms, their defense of the Orthodox faith against heresy. Chapter 5 summaries the findings of the study and identifies priorities for further research. / Department of Christian Spiritual Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Missiology)
