Nutritive evaluation of two native north Texas legumes (Strophostyles) for goats

Foster, Jamie Lee 15 November 2004 (has links)
The objective of this study was to determine effects of supplementing coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon; CBG) hay with Strophostyles helvula (98 g kg-1 crude protein (CP), 476 g kg-1 neutral detergent fiber (NDF)), S. leiosperma (117 g kg-1 CP, 497 g kg-1 NDF), or cottonseed meal (506 g kg-1 CP, 352 g kg-1 NDF; CSM) upon intake of CBG hay (127 g kg-1 CP, 691 g kg-1 NDF) and apparent digestibility of dietary organic matter (OM), NDF, and true digestibility of CP. Six Boer-Spanish goats (46.22 +- 3.99 Kg) were fed CBG plus S. helvula, S. leiosperma, or CSM at 0.34 and 0.68% of BW in a 6*6 Latin square with 3*2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The CBG was fed ad libitum, and the legumes/CSM were fed in two equal daily feedings during a 7-d adjustment period and 7-d collection period in metabolism crates. Feces were collected every 24-h, and CBG, legumes/CSM, and fecal samples were analyzed for OM, NDF, and CP. There were no supplement type*amount interactions (P > 0.05). Supplement type did not affect OM digestibility (P = 0.21), but OM digestibility increased 6.4% (P = 0.05) at the 0.68% versus 0.34% level of supplementation with the legumes or CSM. Supplementation with CSM and S. leiosperma improved NDF digestibility 7% versus supplementation with S. helvula (P = 0.02); and as supplement amount increased NDF digestibility by 5.5% (P = 0.02). The diet supplemented with CSM had the greatest CP digestibility, and S. helvula CP was 6% less digestible than S. leiosperma (P = 0.02). As supplement amount increased, CP digestibility increased 7% (P = 0.01). Intake of DM, OM, and NDF of CBG was unaffected (P = 0.56) by supplementation with CSM, S. helvula, and S. leiosperma, but total diet NDF intake of diets supplemented with CSM and S. helvula was 10.5% less than diet supplemented with S. leiosperma (P = 0.01). Considering digestibility and intake, CSM and S. leiosperma were the best supplements fed in this experiment. Strophostyles leiosperma is recommended as use for diet supplementation for goats when CBG hay basal diet is fed.

Effects of Reed Sedge Peat on Lambs at Weaning with Regard to Stress and Apparent Nutrient Digestibility

Price, Rhianwedd O 03 May 2019 (has links)
For this study 14 lambs were obtained, which were split into two groups; a control group (CON) and a group that was supplemented Reed Sedge Peat (RSP). We wanted to test whether RSP could decrease stress at weaning, increase immune response and also increase digestibility of the animal. Lambs were subjected to an ACTH challenge 48 hours post weaning. After weaning (d 28 of study) 10 of the lambs (5 CON; 5 RSP) also underwent a digestibility challenge. We found that there was no difference (P = 0.8764) within cortisol concentration during the weaning portion of the study between the two treatment groups. During the ACTH challenger there was a difference between RSP group and CON, where RSP had a decrease in cortisol concentration (P = 0.0892). There was no difference in blood cell parameters, except for SEG, % (P = 0.0890) where RSP had greater % of SEG than CON group. Within the digestibility trail there was a decrease in digestibility within the RSP group compared to CON, within DM, OM, NDF and ADF (P = 0.0458; P = 0.0430; P = 0.0509; P = 0.0786; respectively).

Physically Effective Fiber Threshold, Apparent Digestibility, and Novel Fecal Microbiome Identification of the Leopard tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis)

Modica, Breanna Paige 01 September 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Particle size distribution of diet, feces, and change from diet to feces, as well as apparent digestibility (aDig, %) of selected nutrients, and novel fecal microbiome identification of mature female leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis, n = 16) fed exclusively one of three, nutritionally complete, pelleted diets were evaluated in a blind, complete randomized design study. Two diets included insoluble fiber (powdered cellulose) consisting of either 2.0 mm or 0.2 mm length. Insoluble fiber provides nutritional and physical benefits to both the animal host and the microorganisms that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. Insoluble fiber length was used as a means of evaluating a physically effective fiber (peNDF) definition for hindgut-fermenting vertebrates. Numerical trends of each diet particle size distribution indicated a greater amount of particle recovery on the 2.0 mm sieve for the 2.0 mm diet, and a greater particle recovery on the 0.125 mm sieve for the 0.2 mm diet, both as expected based on the added fiber lengths. Fecal particle size distributions were not different between diets, however, distributions of the change in particle size from diet to feces were different between diets. Similar fecal particle size distributions across diets suggests both cellulose lengths are below the peNDF threshold of the leopard tortoise. Apparent digestibility (aDig, %) of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) was not different based on diet, method, or a diet and method interaction; aDig (%) of neutral detergent fiber (aNDF) and sequential acid detergent fiber (sADF) was different based only on diet. These results suggest that while aDig (%) of OM did not change, the source of OM digestibility shifted, as both aNDF and sADF digestibility increased with the cellulose-added diets compared to the control diet. An increase in insoluble fiber digestibility suggests an "effectiveness" of the cellulose lengths. At both bacterial phyla and genera levels, fecal microbiomes were more similar between tortoises fed the cellulose-added diets versus the control diet, suggesting that the hindgut microbial communities adjusted in the hindgut of the tortoises fed the cellulose-added diets by shifting proportions of microbes, based on their role in the hindgut (i.e., cellulose digestion), to accommodate for the addition of cellulose in the two treatment diets. This may explain the similarity among fecal particle size distributions, and suggests that adaptability of the hindgut microbial communities should be considered when defining peNDF for hindgut-fermenting vertebrates.

Uso de subprodutos do arroz na alimentaÃÃo de codornas do tipo corte / Use of rice by-products on the cutting type quail feed

Thales Marcel Bezerra Filgueira 31 July 2012 (has links)
FundaÃÃo de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Cearà / In order to evaluate the effects of replacing corn for broken rice (QA) and the inclusion of parboiled rice bran (FIAP) in rations for meat quails, two experiments were conducted in the period 7 to 49 days age. In each trial, 288 quails with seven days of age were distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six replications of eight birds for experimental unit. In the first experiment, was tested the levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% of replacement corn by broken rice and it was observed that the replacement of corn for broken rice did not significantly influence the performance and carcass characteristics of quails at different stages of creation, neither economic viability. In the second experiment, the treatments were a control diet without the inclusion of FIAP, and the other containing 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% of FIAP. There was a linear decrease in the apparent digestibility of dry matter (CDMS) and crude energy (CDEB) and a linear increase of apparent metabolizable energy (EMA) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen (EMAn) with the inclusion of FIAP in rations, above 5%. Therefore, there was a linear decrease in feed intake and weight gain, without influence in feed conversion, carcass characteristics and parameters of bone quality. Although there was some reduction parameters when FIAP increased above 5%, the performance of birds fed with different levels of FIAP was similar in relation to the control group. Furthermore, the use until 25% of FIAP provided better economic viability. It can be argued that the broken rice can replace corn in the feeding of meat quails at levels up to 100%, while the FIAP can be included in rations in proportions of up to 25% without affecting carcass characteristics.

Aiming to create alternatives to the use of these leaves, the present paper aimed to determine the coefficients of apparent digestibility (AD) from the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and crude energy (CE) of cassava leaf protein concentrate (CLPC) for Nile Tilapia, and to evaluate its inclusion in Nile Tilapia food. The CLPC has been extracted through isoeletric precipitation, method described by CEREDA & VILPOUX (2003). In the CLPC, it has been determined the perceptual of crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), ashes, dry matter (DM) and crude energy (CE), which have shown 48.42%, 13.57%, 3.48%, 93.01% and 5527 Kcal/kg., respectively. 24 tilapias with an average weight of 86.92 ± 36.70 g have been used. The animals have been submitted to fecal collection methodology, through sedimentation, in tanks with funneled shapes. The DM, CP, and CE of CLPC have presented AD of 33.06%, 66.57% and 30.06%, respectively, thus, showing digestible protein and energy values of 32.23% and 1661.13 kcal of DE/kg. In order to evaluate CLPC inclusion in Nile Tilapia food, 300 larvae at the age of 7 days old have been used, which were distributed in 20 aquariums with capacity for 30 liters of useful volume, in a fully randomized outline with five treatments and four repetitions, pointing out that the experimental unit is consisted of an aquarium with 15 tilapia larvae. Five isoproteic and isoenergetic diets have been elaborated containing 38.6% of digestible protein and 3300 kcal of DE/kg of diets with level of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of CLPC inclusion. At the end of the experimental time, differences have not been noticed (W>0.05) on the final average weight, weight gain, final length and survival of larvae which were fed with diets containing CLPC. Avaliação dos efeitos associativos entre suplemento concentrado e volumoso de baixa qualidade em ovinos / Evaluating associative effects between concentrate supplement and low quality houghage in sheep

Fernandes, Tiago Albandes January 2014 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of levels of concentrate supplementation on parameters of intake and digestibility of the components of the total diet in sheep, measuring the magnitude of associative effects (AE) between concentrate suplement and forage of low quality. It was used 16 wethers, Corriedale, with seven months of age and initial body weight (BW) of 33.62 + 1.81 kg. The animals were dosed preventatively with dewormer, received the dosage of vitamin complex ADE and went through an adjustment period of 15 days.It was used four replicates per treatment (inclusion levels of supplement in the diet of 0, 0.33, 0.66, and 1% of BW) in a completely randomized design. The experimental diets were composed by supplying a concentrated supplement, base of soybean meal, corn bran and cassava flour, combined with ad libitum supply of low quality hay, arising from deferred natural grassland of the central depression region of State of Rio Grande do Sul. Evaluations were performed in two periods of 21 days each. The animals were placed in individual stalls with separate supply of food and water feeders. The parameters of intake of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral and acid detergent fiber (NDF and FDA) and gross energy (GE) of roughage were not influenced by treatments, showing the absence of positive or negative associative effects (AE). The parameters of total intake of DM, OM, CP, EB and water, were influenced in a linear way by the treatments (P <0.0001). But NDF and ADF were not affected. All digestibility parameters showed a linear increasing behavior as the level of supplementation was increased, except that of NDF and ADF were stable. DM digestibility was affected linearly (P <0.0001), while the digestibility of OM, nitrogen and EB showed a quadratic response (P = 0.0433, <0.0001 and 0.0479, respectively). The daily nitrogen balance showed linear increase (P <0.0001). The AE of digestibility showed quadratic behavior (P = 0.0461). Supplementation, in a general context, showed beneficial effects, maximizing nutrient intake of the total diet and its digestibility.
