Conservation Of Archaeological Sites In Urban Areas In Turkey: Soli-pompeiopolis As A Case Study

Sarikaya Levent, Yasemin 01 October 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Urban development has long been the major threat to archaeological sites. Recent theoretical discussions advocate that archaeological sites in urban areas should be protected not only through technical solutions and archaeological studies, but also through spatial planning processes, which define basic mechanisms to direct and control the urban development. Despite a specific type of spatial plan, the &amp / #8216 / conservation plan&amp / #8217 / in Turkish legislation, negative impacts of urban development on archeological sites could not be successfully eliminated. This is due to the reason that conservation and planning systems do not concern &amp / #8216 / integration of the archaeological site with the urban built environment&amp / #8217 / , which results in either isolation or destruction of the archaeological remains. Based on this assumption, the objective of this dissertation is to determine in which points Turkish conservation and planning systems fail to achieve integration and how this failure could be overcame. Turkish conservation and planning systems are evaluated on selected case study area, Soli-Pompeiopolis Archaeological Site, by using three-step qualitative analysis methodology. First, conservation and planning decisions and the built environment shaped by these decisions are examined in details through process analysis. Then, based on qualities of spatial planning process redefined through theoretical discussions, &amp / #8216 / process integration&amp / #8217 / and &amp / #8216 / outcome integration&amp / #8217 / are evaluated through context analysis. Lastly, reasons of problematic issues on integration are discussed through causality analysis. Concluding the study, a discussion is carried on how to achieve &amp / #8216 / integration of conservation of archaeological sites in urban areas into spatial planning processes&amp / #8217 / by making modifications within the &amp / #8216 / Turkish conservation and planning systems&amp / #8217 / .

Predicting buried sites : analysis of the Tipton Till Plain region of Indiana

Smith, Andrew M. 24 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis utilizes a combination of landform and soil data and a GIS model to analyze previous subsurface reconnaissance data within the Tipton Till Plain region of Indiana. Survey areas are analyzed according to their location within drainages as well as on their individual surface and subsurface soil characteristics. Additionally, measurements of the valley width at the investigation area and upstream are collected and considered. Soils are also analyzed as a ratio of their individual impermeability in relation to the impermeability of upstream soils. Soil taxonomy and drainage characteristics are analyzed along with the effects stream order and proximity to water have on the potential for an area to contain buried deposits. The conclusion drawn is that comparisons of the permeability of individual drainage basins in relation to the larger drainage basin is not a reliable method of predicting the potential for site burial. The relationship between the valley width at the point of investigation in relation to valley width upstream was analyzed with a weak correlation between valley width stability and the potential for buried deposits. Soil drainage and taxonomic classification analysis appear to show where buried deposits are not likely to be encountered. The analyses of stream order and proximity to water did not reveal any significant differences in the potential for encountering buried deposits. It is recommended that the current guidelines for recommending subsurface investigation should be followed more strictly. / Department of Anthropology

Basagac, Ozge 01 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT PRESENTATION OF CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT CASE STUDY: SAGALASSOS BASAgA&Ccedil / , &Ouml / zge M.S, Department of Architecture in Restoration Supervisor: Dr. Fuat G&Ouml / K&Ccedil / E July 2005, 123 pages Parallel to the growing concern for the protection and presentation of archaeological sites, virtual environments (VE) are in use for visualization purposes since mid 1980&rsquo / s. This thesis investigates the potentials and problems of presenting a classical archaeological site in VE from the viewpoint of conservation science, to ensure the welfare of the remains. The study is handled in two sections as a conceptual part and a case study. The conceptual part, first dwells upon the history, aim and techniques of the VE presentations. This section ends with the development of criteria for the evaluation of VE presentations of classical archaeological sites. For the case study, the antique city of Sagalassos is investigated through its history, urban tissue, architecture, multidisciplinary studies and VE projects. The thesis concludes with general remarks on the presentation of classical archaeological sites in VE and proposes some solutions to improve the presentation of Sagalassos in particular.

Le patrimoine culturel de la Libye entre identité sociale et culturelle / The cultural heritage of Lybia between social and cultural identity

El Marzoke, Halima 04 April 2016 (has links)
As part of this research, we worked on the construction of a social identity through cultural heritage. We have tried to highlight the importance of the role of heritage in a person’s social life. After presenting the cultural heritage in Libyan society, not only based on buildings of Greco-Roman Antiquity or the Arab world but also museums, folklore and theaters, we conducted a public survey in the city of Tripoli in order to know the people’s opinion on this issue.Through their answers, we noted the importance they give to their heritage and their fear to see their past being destroyed or plundered by war. The people of Libya are proud of this cultural heritage. This research has allowed us to understand that when a country has such a tradition, the social and cultural identity necessarily requires the recognition of its cultural and artistic heritage.

Les musées de sites archéologiques appréhendés en tant que vecteurs de développement local à travers trois études de cas préfigurant la mise en valeur opérationnelle du site de Chellah / Archaeological site museums regarded as tools for local development through three case studies foreshadowing an operational enhancement of the site of Chellah

Terrisse, Marc 30 September 2011 (has links)
The archaeological site of Chellah located in Rabat, Morocco brings together historical and archaeological éléments from the Pre-Punic time untill the Merinid sultans' period. This site is currently not enhanced or even abandonned This research focuses on an operational enhancement of the site of Chellah. This proposal is based on the changing concepts of heritage, museums and tourism in the contemporary period in both Europe and Morocco and on the analysis of three case studies (Montreal, Saint-Romain en Gal and Zaragoza) allowing to identify elements of success in the transformation of a site museum into a vector of local development. A scientific work, combined with a consideration of economie issues mainly related to tourism are key elements in a sustainable approach in terms of a site museums valorization. The museum must also be considered as an interdisciplinary subject. These success factors are included in the site museum project of Chellah but this one also takes into account the specific socio-economic context of Rabat in Morocco.

Prehistoric Rockshelters of Pennsylvania: Revitalizing Behavioral Interpretation from Archaeological Spatial Data

Burns, Jonathan Allen January 2009 (has links)
The size of archaeological data collection units and provenience controls affect data resolution, types of analyses, and the interpretations that archaeologists draw from the spatial patterning of material evidence. This research examines the use of fine-grained data collection units and the analyses that they support in the study of two Pennsylvania rockshelters to: 1) provide a better understanding of rockshelter use and the importance of rockshelters in Pennsylvania and Middle Atlantic region prehistory and, 2) reveal the impact that archaeological units can have on the reconstruction and interpretation of human behaviors in general. Insights from behavioral theory, ethnoarchaeology and previous archaeological research influenced the units and methods employed in the excavation of the Mykut and Camelback rockshelters. This analysis reveals the range of behaviors that can be reconstructed from these data, which can then be compared and contrasted with interpretations of other rockshelters and site contexts in the region. / Anthropology
