Although Pindar’s victory songs, or epinikia, were commissioned and performed to celebrate athletic victories, they present persistent reflections on the narrow limits of human prosperity, the inexorable cycle of success and failure, and the impossibility of appropriating any aspect of a godly nature. The present work provides a close reading of the Pythian series to illustrate how Pindar uses prayer, myth and gnomai to secure the moral and psychological reintegration of the athletic victor back into his close-knit community upon his homecoming (νόστος). As a re-integration rite, the challenging and dark elements of mortal limitation and failure are read as prophylactic statements against the destructive effects of hybris (ὕβρις). The Odes rest upon an archaic cosmology of reciprocal and harmonious exchange between humans themselves and between humans and the gods which is captured by the principle of charis or grace (χάρις). Ὕβρις is a breach of this reciprocity and the antithesis of χάρις since it is the unilateral claim of property, prestige, or privilege as well as the transgression against the divine dispensation which governs the cosmos (κόσμος). Time, alternation, and the failure of reason : Sophoclean tragedy and Archaic Greek thoughtJohnston, Alexandre Charles January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the place, influence, and deployment of archaic Greek thought in Sophocles’ extant tragedies, paying close attention to the ethical and theological content of the plays as well as to their dramatic and literary fabric. I use archaic thought as an umbrella term for a constellation of ideas on the human condition and the gods which is first attested, in Greece, in Homeric epic, but has a long and variegated existence in other contexts and after the archaic period. The thesis consists of six chapters, divided in two parts. The first part provides a general conceptual framework, which is then applied in the detailed readings of Sophocles constituting the second part. The first chapter examines some of the main texts of archaic Greek thought, and offers an interpretation of it as a coherent nexus of ideas gravitating around the core notions of human vulnerability, short-sightedness, and the principle of alternation. Using the examples of Homer’s Iliad and Solon’s Elegy to the Muses, I argue that the narrative structure of archaic poetry can be used to formulate and “perform” archaic ideas. The second chapter formulates the principal argument of the thesis: that archaic thought is central to the ethical and religious content of tragedy as well as to its dramatic and literary fabric, that is, to the form of tragedy as a complex artefact designed to be performed on stage. I explore possible models for the interaction between archaic thought and literature and tragedy, from Aristotle’s Poetics to recent interpretations of tragedy as a hybrid of other literary and intellectual forms. I then examine the ways in which archaic ideas are deployed and performed in tragedy, both in passages that are explicitly archaic in content and diction, and in the complex interactions of dramatic form and intellectual content. This general discussion is illustrated with preliminary readings of four Sophoclean plays: Ajax, Oedipus Tyrannus, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus. The third chapter contextualises the approach adopted in the thesis as a whole by exploring two interpretations of Sophocles in German Idealist thought: Solger’s reading of Ajax and Hölderlin’s reading of Oedipus Tyrannus. It argues that these analyses, albeit under anachronistic conceptual categories such as “the tragic”, seize on some of the fundamental questions of archaic and tragic ethics and theology: the relationship between the human and divine spheres, and the limits of language and human understanding. In Chapters 4, 5, and 6, I offer detailed readings of Trachiniae, Antigone, and Electra, three plays chosen to reflect the diversity of contexts in which archaic ideas exist in Sophocles. I argue that archaic thought is central to the intellectual and dramatic fabric of all three plays, even though the deployment and emphasis of archaic patterns and ideas differs from one tragedy to the next.

Centrado em dezessete fragmentos da mélica grega arcaica (final do século VII a meados do VI a.C.), este trabalho consiste no estudo da representação de Afrodite nos poetas Álcman, Alceu, Estesícoro, Íbico e Anacreonte. Desse modo, esta tese de doutoramento dá continuidade à dissertação de mestrado já publicada em livro, na qual realizei o mesmo estudo em catorze fragmentos mélicos de Safo (c. 630 - 580 a.C.). Com o recorte agora realizado, o retrato da deusa torna-se ainda mais multifacetado neste que é um dos gêneros poéticos mais importantes da literatura grega antiga, a mélica. Na busca de apreender os movimentos executados nos desenhos de Afrodite pelos cinco poetas mélicos do corpus desta tese, privilegiei a análise interpretativa dos fragmentos sem perder de vista elementos provenientes de outros gêneros poéticos, da iconografia e de registros extraliterários. Procurei, assim, superar, na medida do possível, a precariedade material mais ou menos acentuada das canções fragmentárias e dar conta de uma personagem que não pertence exclusivamente à poesia, mas também a outros gêneros artísticos, à história e à religião gregas. / Concentrated on seventeen fragments of the archaic Greek melic poetry (end of 7th to the middle of 6th centuries B.C.), this work consists in the study of Aphrodites representation in the songs of Alcman, Alcaeus, Stesichorus, Ibycus and Anacreon. Thus, the present graduation thesis gives sequence to the Masters dissertation that has already been published as a book, and in which fourteen melic fragments of Sappho (c. 630 - 580 B.C.) are studied according to the same approach. Now, in this work, the goddesss portrait is even more enhanced in its multiple aspects, despite being fragmented, and inserted in one of the most important genres of ancient Greek literature set within a specific historic period. In the effort to apprehend the movements executed in the drawings of Aphrodite by the five poets in the corpus of this thesis, I have favored the interpretative analysis of the fragments without overlooking the elements originated from other poetic genres, iconographic tradition and extra-literary records. By doing so, I have attempted to overcome, as much as possible, the precariousness of the material, somewhat more or less evident in the fragmented songs, and to understand in-depth a divine character that is not confined to poetry, but pertains to other artistic genres, as well as to Greek history and religion.

Woven in Stone: The Use of Symmetry Analysis Methodology to Determine Underlying Patterns of Symmetry in the Polychrome Painted Decorations on Some Athenian KoraiThomson, Ainslie Elizabeth 01 February 2008 (has links)
Many studies of the Archaic Greek kore focus exclusively on stylistic considerations in an attempt to date these statues more and more accurately. Other studies propose various meanings for the kore. Each of these approaches can be extremely subjective, with the result that the large body of extant literature about the kore tends to be repetitive and argumentative in nature, and, with several exceptions, does not advance the understanding of the kore to any
appreciable degree past where it had developed by the 1980s. I use a different, more empirical methodology to study a small group of korai, found in the 1880s near the
Erechtheion on the Athenian Akropolis.
Symmetry analysis of the patterns painted onto these korai at the time of their creation reveals both consistency of pattern use through the period of seventy years between c560 BCE and c490 BCE, as well as some anomalous patterns. I tabulate the various patterns, as well as their frequency of occurrence, and briefly speculate that there is a correlation between the pattern consistencies and anomalies and events in the known historical record, such as the

A partir dessa concepção mais ampla de gênero, este trabalho visa à tradução e estudo dos fragmentos elegíacos de Tirteu, tendo em vista o caráter estritamente político de suas elegias narrativas e marciais e seus vínculos temáticos com a tradição épica, de modo que possamos ensejar uma reflexão outra sobre a função e estatuto dessa poesia em suas determinadas ocasiões de performance. / According to modern studies on archaic greek lyric, occasion of performance was a main feature to the definition of a poetic genre. Cette recherche propose de dresser le portrait de la production et de la diffusion des céramiques de style à bandes (waveline) produites en Égée du Nord aux périodes archaïque et classique par le biais de l'étude de matériel inédit recueilli sur sept sites de colonies grecques établies entre le Strymon et le golfe de Maronée et six sites de l'arrière-pays thrace. Elle vise à rassembler, au moyen de données archéologiques et archéornétriques, des informations sur les milieux de production, les réseaux d'échanges et les habitudes de consommation de la clientèle à l'égard de ces céramiques. Le volet archéologique vise d'abord à définir le répertoire des formes, des décors et des pâtes, puis à déterminer l'étendue et le cadre chronologique de la production. Le volet archéométrique porte sur des analyses physico-chimiques en laboratoire (spectrométrie de fluorescence par rayons X) visant à caractériser et à déterminer l'origine de 200 des 540 céramiques recensées. Le corpus est constitué d'échantillons mis au jour sur les sites d’Argilos, de Thasos, de Bergè et de Phagrès, quatre sites de Macédoine orientale. L'inédit de la recherche réside dans l'opportunité qu'elle offre aux archéologues de dater et d'identifier l'origine des céramiques à bandes nord-égéennes, entraînant du coup des répercussions directes sur les discussions portant sur les milieux de production, les réseaux de circulation et les relations interrégionales entre les différents sites étudiés. Considérée dans une perspective de circulation et d'échanges, l'étude des céramiques à bandes contribue à faire progresser l'état des connaissances sur l'histoire économique, culturelle et artisanale du nord de l'Égée entre les VIIe et IVe siècles av. J. -C. / This research aims to shed light on the production and diffusion of the Waveline style pottery made in the Northern Aegean during the Archaic and Classical periods based on the study of unpublished material recovered from seven Greek colonies established between the Strymon River and Maronea, and six sites of the Thracian hinterland. More specifically it seeks to gather information regarding workshops, trading networks, and consumption habits through typo-stylistical, distribution, and archaeometric analyses. The primary goal of this study is the detailed analysis of the finds according to their stratigraphic context in order to define the range of shapes, stylistic patterns, and clay fabrics of the ceramic series, and to establish diffusion patterns and chronology. A second objective, based on laboratory analysis. is to characterize the geochemical composition of 200 of the 540 identified vessels in order to determine their provenance (using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The corpus contains samples from Argilos, Thasos, Berge, and Phagres, four of the main site covered by this study. The novelty of this research lies in the opportunity it provides for archaeologists to date and identify more precisely the origin of the North-Aegean waveline pottery, leading to direct impact on discussions related to workshops, trading networks, and inter-relationships between the studied sites. Considered from the perspective of circulation and ex change, the study of the waveline pottery contributes to advancing knowledge on the economic, cultural, and social history of the Northern Aegean between the 7th and 4th centuries B.C.
