Entre mudanças e permanências: o uso de indicadores na avaliação de transformações arquitetônicas / Between changes and permanences: the use of indicators in the evaluation of architectural transformationsMoreira, Elisa Vaz Ribeiro 11 April 2014 (has links)
In the broad field of research that a framework for relations between change and permanence in architecture can offer, this dissertation will address this question through the analysis of architectural specimens that, in an attempt to adapt to new demands of society, had modified its original configuration. More specifically, the case study of this dissertation consists in the analysis of ancient residences of Recife whose spatial configuration has been changed in order to adapt them to a new role. The analysis of such specimens aims to develop systematic methods wich will allow to objectively establish \"degrees of transformation\" regarding the spatial configurations of the old residences. The overall objective of this research is to show how the use of numerical indicators can assist in examining the changes in architectural objects and therefore can be presented as a useful instrument for checking and monitoring the integrity of these buildings.

The Littlefield Home adaptive reuse and new addition for the UT Development officeKim, Sujin 11 July 2013 (has links)
For my Master’s Design Study, I worked on adaptive reuse and a new addition for the Littlefield Home, a late-nineteenthcentury-
Victorian-style residence, on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Like other historic buildings in briskly changing
urban environments, this historic site needs some help to become a more useful campus property with no damage on its architectural
character. The biggest challenge of this project was how a contemporary addition could be “compatible” but “differentiated” with the
older buildings and site, following the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. This design topic has often been controversial,
and architects have frequently been confused about their responsibility. My project shows advanced criteria for architects
who work on architectural heritages and is closely associated with a topic of contemporary historic preservation: balancing change,
preservation, and development. The Littlefield Home and new addition will create a better working environment for the UT Development
Office and ensure the long-term preservation of the historic property. My Littlefield Home project will show a technical and
aesthetical collaboration of contemporary architecture with historic properties. / text

Preservation History of Art Nouveau Heritage in Hungary, Czech Lands and FranceZámbó, Lilla January 2013 (has links)
Preservation History of Art Nouveau Heritage in Hungary, Czech Lands and France Master Thesis Lilla Zámbó Abstract This master thesis discusses the preservation history of the most relevant architectural monuments of Art Nouveau from the perspective of different ideological and political systems of Hungary, the Czech Lands and France in the 20th century. The main objective of the thesis is to examine the influences of Art Nouveau in the society and vice versa through different heritage protection procedures and successful monument restorations, which took place in significant "Art Nouveau cities" of Europe: Budapest, Prague, Nancy and Strasbourg. The Art Nouveau style (1890-1914) was born as a reaction to the academic schools at the end of the nineteenth century and spread quickly by advertising a new architectural program, thanks to its special aesthetical, social and political contents. In order to satisfy the needs of the "modern" age and to create a better environment for the people, Art Nouveau broke with the previous dominant historical tendencies, not only in a mental way, but also in employing a new design and decorative elements. Thus the international practice-based, but locally unique and unprecedented works of the Art Nouveau were totally differing from the dominant eclectic townscapes, which is...

Arquitetura moderna: um estudo sobre patrimônio e preservação / Modern Architecture: a study of heritage and preservationPadua, Carolina Dal Ben 30 April 2013 (has links)
The present research is about preservation of the Modern Architecture, with its focus on the actions of the federal preservation institute, IPHAN, in a way to analyze its protected heritage and the procedures of intervention which have been used nowadays in these buildings. IPHAN was a pioneer in protection of modern architecture, but until now it has no systematic studies about this movement; and the practices of intervention in Brazil are still in need of more discussion over the issue, in order to substantiate the works on the restoration\'s charters and theories, which are globally known. That way, so as to contextualize the Brazilian and the international scene, the history of modern architecture\'s preservation was analyzed, since the first actions of preservation and its laws, in order to understand in which moment this manifestation started to be recognized as heritage and in which way was its protection granted in several countries. Also, recent discussions are shown in an international context regarding the process of intervention in these buildings, being analyzed some cases of works icons of the modern movement. Setting off to the Brazilian scene, firstly a report is made about the creation of SPHAN, exposing its first characters and in which way its connection with the modern movement in Brazil contributed to the pioneer protection of these works. Helped by these considerations, a study of IPHAN\'s protected modern works is presented, studied from protection files, objecting the understanding of the motivations which led to these guardianships; for that, the exposure of the institution\'s practices according to each moment was fundamental to the contextualization of the analyzes. And, finally, the study of intervention in a protected building is presented, the Palácio do Planalto, in a way to bring back the analysis initially made about the recent discussions regarding the procedures of intervention, elaborating a comparative analysis with the work done in the Seat of the Presidency. That way, it is intended to contribute to the discussion about the issue, stimulating researches and practices of intervention which are more subsidized in restoration theories, besides fomenting public actions which are more systematic and consistent, aiming to the preservation of these recent heritage.

The Role Of Architectural Heritage In The Rural Built Environment: A Case StudyBaskan, Emine Gizem 01 February 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The built environment has mostly evolved under the influence of cultural heritage and has been shaped in response to our needs and resources. However, rapid changes have occurred in this environment with the impacts of globalization and mass production. The impact of these changes threatens to obliterate the unique character of rural settlements, which unlike urban areas still possess cultural identity.
The aim of this study was to investigate the sustainable transmission of rural building heritage to prosperity / the potential of its adaptation for new settlements / and the interpretation of designing new houses in the light of traditional ones / as an integral part of sustainable rural development. To this end, a case study was conducted in the village of Gü / zelö / z in Kayseri, where the transition from historical to contemporary styles and techniques was readily observable.
The principles for effectively implementing projects which relate to the preservation and transmission of rural heritage have been formulated in the European Rural Heritage Observation Guide (ERHOG), which was initiated by Committee of Senior Officials of the European Conference of Ministers Responsible for Regional Planning/Spatial Planning (CEMAT) and the Village Design Statement (VDS) Packs, which were initiated by the Community Councils in United Kingdom (UK).
The new development in Gü / zelö / z village, as carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and Settlement (PWS) together with additions and alterations to existing traditional houses, were studied to understand the changing needs of the villagers. A comparative analysis was made between the level of satisfaction for both the traditional houses and post-disaster houses (PDH). An evaluation according to the ERHOG and VDS criteria was conducted for both types of houses regarding the relation of buildings with their immediate vicinity / use of materials / functional requirements / and constructional concerns. The results showed the importance of the recognition and promotion of cultural heritage to create an appropriate built environment.

A New Approach For Defining The Conservation Status Of Early Republican Architecture, Case Study: Primary School Buildings In IzmirKul, Fatma Nursen 01 March 2008 (has links) (PDF)
International discussions on the conservation of the twentieth-century architectural heritage emphasize the diversity of the whole of the built environment of the entire century, rather than limiting consideration to canonic examples of the architectural historiography during the identification and assessment of the properties to be conserved. In contrast to this international holistic and inclusive approach, the approach to the identification and assessment of the properties in Turkey has in general been selective and exclusive. The early Republican architectural heritage of Turkey is defined through canonical examples drawn from the architectural historiography. On the other hand, more modest, anonymous examples, which constitute the great majority of the built environment of the period, are excluded from conservation status. The main argument of this dissertation is that the current exclusive approach, which selects only some important properties for conservation according to their physical characteristics, is far from understanding the political, institutional and social transformations of the early Republican period, as well as the role of architecture in this transformation. On the basis of this idea, a new assessment approach is proposed in this dissertation which could enable to gain conservation status to the whole diversity of early Republican architecture including more modest examples as well as the canonical ones. Contrary to the current exclusive approach which assesses the end product of a process according to its physical characteristics, the proposed approach is inclusive, taking into consideration the formation and usage processes with all their participating meanings and values and considering these processes along with the final physical form of the building itself. The proposed new approach is tested here on the specific case of the primary school buildings of Izmir, the great majority of which are currently remain out of conservation status due to their rather modest physical qualifications. The dissertation concludes that these buildings are an integral part of the education policies of the early Republican period, of the cultural and social transformations informed by these policies, and of the role of architecture in this process, and that these buildings are the tangible evidences of the meanings and values of this formation process. It then goes on to reveal the necessity of understanding the formation process through extensive research in order to be able to incorporate these meanings and values into the assessment phase.

Rokiškio architektūros paveldas ir jo animavimo galimybės / Rokiškis architectural heritage and its animation possibilitiesMorkūnaitė, Miglė 12 June 2014 (has links)
Rokiškis is Lithuanian city which has quite large number of architectural

sixteenth century), which mark prominent Lithuanian nobility's relatives life and activity in
this vicinity, ending with objects, arising in twenty-first century.
Unfortunately, architectural legacy of not all periods in society is recognized as
heritage. Unannounced value of objects complicates and their preservation issues - without
realizing that the construction is valuable, represents locality identity and distinguishes it in
the context of other cities in the country, it is condemned to further degradation.

Rokiskis architectural objects, identifying the diversity of heritage in city and also these
values can be the basis of concrete heritage objects preservation.
Also this final thesis will try to analyze the situation of Rokiškis architectural

This dissertation deals with “The Architectural Heritage of Santiago - Rio Grande do Sul: Identification and Valuation.” It aims to answer the following question: What is Architectural Heritage in the municipality of Santiago? The dissertation starts showing the origin of the subject heritage through the theoretical framework and how this has been discussed, in terms of preservation issue policies over the time, as well as the concepts that were used to define the term “heritage”. This theoretical basis was then the focus of this work that is done through artistic and historical criteria to evaluate effectively what is considered Architetonical Heritage in the Municipality of Santiago. For this reason, 29 buildings were selected as a sample for the study. In this selection, it was sought to ensure the best possible representation of buildings that might integrate the architectural heritage of Santiago. It was adopted the commitment to research buildings of various important historical phases in the formation of this district, from the origin of the gathering until today. These buildings should attend some items such as: having some meaning, value and architetonical or typological quality; having some cultural, symbolic or historical value to the santiaguense society, and at last having some quality of construction, technologiacasl or plastic value. After having done the buildings selection for the samples they were raised, analyzed and subsequently received the valuation as being or not landmarks of heritage value. From then, based on the buildings analysed and with a historical focus of the municipality, we can conclude what is architetonical heritage in Santiago.
