Land of the in-between : modern architecture and the State in socialist Yugoslavia, 1945-65

Kulić, Vladimir 10 June 2011 (has links)
Land of the in-between explores how modern architecture responded to demands for political and ideological representation during the Cold War using socialist Yugoslavia as a case-study. Self-proclaimed as universal and abstract, modernism acquired a variety of specific meanings hidden behind seemingly neutral forms that, however, frequently contained decidedly political dimensions. During the Cold War, Yugoslavia deliberately positioned itself halfway between the Eastern and Western blocs, thus representing an excellent case for a study of shifting political meanings ascribed to architecture at that time. This dissertation follows two lines of investigation: transformations of architectural profession, and changes in the modes of architectural representation of the state. Consequences of two key moments are explored: the rise to power of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1945, and its expulsion from the Soviet bloc in 1948. These two moments correspond to two distinct phases that shaped architecture in socialist Yugoslavia: a period of intense Stalinization immediately after WW II, and a period of gradual liberalization after the country's sudden break-up with the Soviet Union. During the short-lived Stalinist period, the regime subjected Yugoslav culture to the doctrine of Socialist Realism. But after 1948, the state relaxed its iron grip, allowing for a degree of intellectual and artistic freedom. At the same time, Yugoslavia reestablished friendly relations with the West, opening itself to influences of Western culture. The revival of modern architecture that followed was in return instrumental in reinforcing Yugoslavia's new image of a reformed Communist country. Land of the in-between argues that Yugoslavia's political shifts gave rise to a uniquely hybrid architectural culture. It combined Communist ideology with Western aesthetic and technological influences to create a mix that complicated the common black and white picture of the Cold War. Architecture in socialist Yugoslavia thus operated within a complex framework of shifting political and cultural paradigms whose contrasts highlight the meanings that post-World War II modernism assumed on a global scale. / text

Environmental art in the landscape

Fiedor, Edward J. January 2002 (has links)
An effort to understand the basic contextual foundation of environmental art design in relation to site-specific context. As a result of this understanding, environmental artwork designs will be developed based upon the context of chosen sites on the Ball State University's campus with a view toward the development of greater visual literacy. The work effort includes a preliminary exploration of the methods and approaches followed by contemporary designers (including artists, landscape architects, landscape designers, and architects) in the design and execution of environmental art works that have a contextual relationship to a site. This exploration focuses upon Post World War II outdoor installations intended for public viewing and/or interaction. Context of Project WorkThe first step consists of information gathering about professional designers, including landscape architects, artists, landscape designers, and architects, who design outdoor environmental artworks based upon the context of a site. This information will include literature search, site visits, case studies, and possible interviews with designers. This information will then be distilled into sketch designs of environmental art pieces that can be sited on the Ball State University's campus. The designs produced for the artworks will be based upon the information gathered about various designers with attention to the preservation of the stylistic influences from the artists while deleting the possibility of repetition of previous artworks. The work of research on artists and projects will result in an expanded knowledge base from which a group of three or four designers will be selected to serve as exemplars or a case study foundation for the design effort. It is expected that the entire effort will serve as a model of an apprenticeship in outdoor art and site design for a non-art major pursuing a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. In addition, the work effort will serve to promote visual literacy in the Ball State University campus as well as to provide suggestions for physical designers on the placement and execution of site specific outdoor art. / Department of Landscape Architecture

The present day urban tissue may be considered, in general ways, as a superposition of shapes and forms which gets its meaning and significance through the addition of layers from each period of time. On the other hand, that superposition permits no longer that cities can be considered in their fullness and also that architecture can no longer be seen as a detached object from its context or a mere add-on of it. In society, the concepts of time and space have today another meaning, and grows the number of social roles that interfere on the production of our urbis. On contemporary time, the architects' role has been questioned and their practice demands increasingly enlarged, what rebounds directly on the quality of their formation. It is in this scenario that excellence on Architecture/Urban Design schools is one of the necessary conditions for the Architecture/Urban Design professional to respond the demands of that new reality. This work raises the hypothesis that the present stage at Architecture/ Urban Design schools in the State of São Paulo is directly bound to the specific regulations and laws, bound to the action of several social actors combined with superior education market, as well as to the State of São Paulo's territorial characteristics. This research objective is to analyze the influence of legislation, actors and aspects involved in the State's Architecture/Urban Design Courses and in which degree this alchemy reflects and molds these schools along the history. In this pursuit it was made a documentary analysis upon the correspondent legislation and academic evaluation instruments, based on official and public access data, setting as initial milestone the implementation of curricular policies (Portaria 1770/94). Results point out a expansion of the schools ruled by the market oriented logic in superior education, associated with characteristics and economical potentialities of São Paulo's territory, and its discussion asks for the widening of affirmative action leading to a narrowing relationship between architecture/urbanism professionals and society / Doutorado / Arquitetura e Construção / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

History museum and archive of the lesbian and gay community of New York City

Plitt, Joel Ivan January 1994 (has links)
This thesis is an exercise in responsibility regarding my actions as an architect. It is based upon the belief that architecture is a product conveying culture. While architecture can convey culture, it also has the potential to shape and facilitate change q in culture. Therefore, one can view the architect as more than a technician, making architecture stand and work properly, or an artist, concerned with the aesthetic/architectonic qualities of architecture, but rather as an active entity who can both convey and change cultural values through the built environment. The struggle in this thesis regarding responsibility has been to make my role more than an active entity in culture, but a consciously active entity in culture. Since I have long viewed culture as a political product and one's existence in culture as a political act, then one’s responsibility as an architect could be to make architecture as the conscious embodiment of a political ideology. For me, feminism is the political ideology, and Liberative Architecture is the conscious embodiment. / Master of Architecture
