An algorithm for growing interconnection paths in a fault tolerant multiprocessor array

Zaidi, Syed Ahmad Abbas January 1987 (has links)
Cellular arrays of processors are suitable for implementing algorithms that have a substantial amount of inherent parallelism. This thesis describes an algorithm for growing interconnection paths between processors in order to map a pattern on a fault tolerant multiprocessor array. The array uses an eight port routing switch whose hardware design and simulation is discussed in the research. The time taken to grow the paths using the proposed algorithm is evaluated with the help of timing equations derived in this thesis. Finally the effect of reducing switch hardware is investigated at both the switch level and the system level. The effect at the system level is evaluated by mapping seven different array patterns on the array and doing a probability analysis to estimate the number of switch failures required to cause array reconfiguration. It is shown that although reduction in switch hardware increases the individual switch reliability, it has a detrimental effect on the system reliability. It is also seen that the probability of array reconfiguration increases with time and pattern size. / Master of Science

Direction-of-arrival Estimation of Wideband Sources Using Sensor Arrays

Yoon, Yeo-Sun 12 July 2004 (has links)
Sensor arrays are used in many applications where their ability to localize signal sources is essential. For many applications, it is necessary to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of target sources. Although there are many DOA estimation methods available, most of them are valid only for narrowband signals where time delay can be approximated as a phase shift. This thesis focuses on DOA estimation algorithms for wideband sources. Specifically, this thesis proposes the pruned fast beamformer which can reduce the number of computations of Delay-and-Sum (DS) beamforming by using a multi-resolution structure. For high resolution methods, signal subspace methods are required. Most of the subspace techniques for wideband signals decompose the received wideband signals into several bands of narrowband signals through bandpass filtering. Then, there are two different ways of processing decomposed signals. The incoherent methods process each band independently by a given narrowband method and average the results. The coherent methods attempt to modulate the signals in each band so that they can be combined coherently. In this thesis, a new DOA estimator, which is called TOPS, is developed to avoid disadvantages of both the incoherent and the coherent methods. The new method which can be categorized as a non-coherent method is tested and compared with other methods. It exhibits many desirable features for a number of applications where the sources are wideband such as acoustic direction finding.

Array antenna synthesis including element and feed coupling

Takamizawa, Koichiro January 1988 (has links)
Precise radiation pattern control for an array antenna requires precise control of array element excitations. One application is that of low side lobe patterns. Classical synthesis methods for the desired pattern may not be realized in practice due to coupling effects. Coupling occurs in two forms: the mutual coupling between array elements and the coupling introduced by the feed networks. Ideally one could account for such coupling within the array architecture during the design process and alter the feed network parameters to adjust for such coupling. Unfortunately, this is a nonlinear problem requiring special solution techniques. This report presents the solution techniques for determining feed network parameter values that compensate for antenna-feed network coupling. Scattering parameter representations of the antenna array and the feed networks are used. Examples of various array configurations for microstrip antenna arrays and for dipole arrays are included. / Master of Science
