Architecture of light and sound

Hart, Charles J. 09 September 2008 (has links)
Art reaches to our souls through the doorways of our senses. Architecture. as a form of the arts. can offer the opportunity to explore the realm of expression through an idea or intuition about perception; perception that develops at many levels and through all means of sensing what exists in the world. To discover architecture is to understand an offering of "place" as perceived through feelings of closure and openness and spatial relation and movement and many other ideas related to both architectural expression and the human experience. The realization that the success or failure of architecture lies not in the construction itself. but in how the texture of a wall gives a feeling of solidity. or the way a shadow compresses and encloses a space. or how the sound of wind blowing through a passage expresses the motion embedded in the walkway itself. is critical to the making of architecture that touches the soul. In this way. architecture is sculpture. it is poetry. it is music. it is language. and all of these are architecture. Considering the tools of light. sound. path and place and how the mind interacts with these conditions establishes the beginnings for a foundation of architectural thought. / Master of Architecture

Chapter 4, Chapter 5, and OnlineAppendices (The Many Forms of Art)

Broderick, Jane Tingle, Raines, Shirley C. 24 February 2012 (has links)
Book Summary: This book is written for early childhood educators as well as those who work with children from birth through age eight. The book focuses on helping educators make the vital connection to the arts--including music, movement, drama, and the visual arts--throughout all areas of the classroom and curriculum, and on developing creative teachers who will be able to foster an artistic environment. Observations and photos of teachers and children demonstrate practical ways the arts can be used to help children reach their potential. Educators will find many ideas for open-ended activities that are important for the development of young children, and which will encourage them to think in new ways. Discussion of professional standards and recommendations allows teachers to be cognizant of goals that are important in the early years. Thorough in its coverage, the text speaks to children with special needs and cultural diversity, leaving readers with a complete information resource regarding arts in the young child's classroom.

Using the traditional textile Sadu as an element of the Kuwait traditions and representing it as a monumental modern art form

Albehairi, Musaed January 2010 (has links)
This is a practice based research, based on a representation of motifs related to Kuwait's traditions and heritage through Sadu textile; the research starts with determining the factors needed by Sadu in order to move to the monumental modern art form. One of these factors is the analysis presented by the artists of the first generation in Kuwait concerning Sadu and what was presented by Sami Mohammed in his "Sadu Project" in the Eighties. From another side, to present what affected Sadu through the globalisation concept and to benefit from the same in order to show Kuwait visual culture, analyse and develop the colour philosophy in order to reach a colour group that represents Sadu modern art. This aspect of the research is bibliographic, along with other aspects, including a critical reflection on practice. The research begins by using Jacques Derrida's "Deconstruction" as a process to dismantle Sadu motifs as ornaments, symbols, colours and subject matter. It is original research as it is based on an interview with Sami Mohammed's, which revealed that, in the Sixties, he was one of the pioneer artists who used modern art as a different area in their art careers, while also building national abstraction in Kuwaiti art. The other interview is with Yahya Swailem, an art teacher and critic in Kuwait since the Sixties, who provided the research with an overview of the history of art in Kuwait. The research aims at attracting the current and young generations to the heritages and traditions of their country by transforming the Sadu textile to a Sadu modern art form in paintings and increasing the art appreciation and their cultural awareness. The research title is also the research aim and the selection of it was based on the existence of words that contributed in refining the twentieth century art as modern art and monumental and Kuwait for determining the research location that is considered the base of the research and linking them with the word "representing" that also shows something new presented by this research. Sadu was selected for this research since it is a major and essential part of the heritage and traditions of Kuwait and since it is a textile, it may be on a two dimension form and for what it witnessed through the art in Kuwait through the first generation artists. Sami Mohammed considered it a start to success in changing its form and making it more modern. The paintings produced in the research display Sadu motifs with a colour philosophy that is different from previous presentations, with a focus on large-scale paintings to gain a new meaning through monumental Sadu art.

Gränsöverskridande föreställningar : En analys av dansperformance utifrån tre exempel

Eriksson, Anna January 2006 (has links)

The essay is an effort to examine and define three examples of liminal dance performances through an aesthetic, hermeneutic and semiotic analysis. The examples are three dance or liminal performances, made by three different choreographers and performed at “Moderna Dansteatern” and “Dansens Hus” in Stockholm during September and October 2005. In the effort to determine the liminal and cross-over in the performances, the analysis focus on aspects such as: the character of the work, choreography, the use of scenery, stage light, requisites, conception of place and interior room, the use of costume and mask, the use of different media as text, pictures, film, and music or not using any these, and the interaction with the audience. The analysis depends on a historical background and the use of literature in the subject. The result of the analysis is that these cross-over performances are very different in character of these aspects and aesthetic form. The definition of dance and performance is, in itself, liminal and difficult to determine.

Preek as kunsvorm / The sermon as an art form

Preller, Willem Petrus Lubbe 06 1900 (has links)
In a sermon form and content are one. Both aspects form part of the theological theory of preaching. This theoretical survey investigates one of the various literary forms through which the biblical writers attempted to communicate the intention of the biblical text in the most effective way. Each of these forms possesses a distinctive communicative character. The development of modern literary theory since the eighties of the twentieth century was a propulsive force leading to the conviction that the Bible was also a collection of religious literature. This conviction implied that the intention of the biblical text could be more clearly understood in a theological justified manner within the historical context by using insights gained from other literature. Acknowledged literary art forms adhering to the emotive as well as the logic-analytical are embraced as such. In this study the sermon as an art form is limited to narrative preaching, developed as a concept; theoretically described and placed within the modern homiletical theory as a suitable component. Results are obtained by means of a comparative study of mutual features that are distinctive to acknowledged art forms in the modern theory of art; narrative art forms in modern literature theory specifically in the modern Afrikaans novel, as well as the narrative form of preaching in the modern homiletical theory. The modern homiletical theory is orientated within the communicative acts theory as meta-theory focusing on dialogical communication which promotes meaning through the involvement of the observer. The conclusions reached indicate that the sermon as an art form can be evaluated and justified within the modem homiletical theory. Taken up in this theory, it can prove significant in communicating the Christian message to the listeners in a convincing rather than compulsive manner. / Practical Theology / D.Th. A sociolinguistic exploration of the pedagogical value of children's oral art forms on a kaleidoscopic cultural terrain: a case of Shona

Nyoni, Tsitsi 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The study is a sociolinguistic exploration of the pedagogical value of Shona children’s oral art forms on a changing cultural terrain to situate them within contemporary classroom pedagogy. Critical Discourse Analysis, Afrocentricity and Constructivism are theories that informed the analysis of the Shona children’s oral art forms. The study is conducted within the qualitative paradigm as a descriptive study. Data was gathered through observartions, standardised open-ended interviews, focus group interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The study established that Shona children’s oral art forms have responded positively to the changing environment in which they are performed in terms of form and content. While this is a positive development, this should be done with caution to ensure that indigenous knowledge systems that are the backbone of African societies are not abused on the global stage. The study has also affirmed that Shona children’s oral art forms are useful pedagogical tools for information dissemination and knowledge creation. It is also evident from the findings that the oral art forms are an embodiment of human factor values that enhance development education. Findings from this study established that Shona children’s oral art forms are reservoirs of values and norms cherished by the Shona as a people and can be reconstructed for teaching various concepts across the primary school curriculum. Evident from this study is that both teachers and learners are knowledgeable of the various traditional Shona children’s oral art forms although new creations are coined to adapt to the changing environment. This shows that the traditional forms are able to withstand the challenges of globalisation, and this resilience is a positive development since it creates an opportunity for researchers to document these in their unadulterated form for posterity. Since findings from the study highlighted threats to the children’s oral art forms due to the advent of technology and globalisation, there is need to act so that they are not pushed to the periphery as was the case during the colonial era. There is need for concerted efforts at packaging them and meaningful infusion of these into all aspects of children’s education for visibility within the changing environment to guard against their demise in an era of globalisation which may impact negatively on the Shona culture. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / Ph.
