The diploma thesis deals with the main personalities dealing with the applied arts concerning metal used between 1895 and 1915. The aim of this thesis is to focus on their artistic creation and to evaluate its contribution to the stylistic development of the applied arts in the Czech countries in the given period and to try also to evaluate the specificity of Czech artistic creation with regards to the main European art centers that influenced the Czech countries. Apart from this main goal, the thesis will deal with the role of education in the development of applied arts in the Czech countries. It will attempt to outline the mutual relationships and benefits between schools and artists. It will mainly focus on the School of Applied Arts as a center of artistic development of applied arts in the Czech countries.

The theme of this thesis is History of School of Applied Arts studios in Prague between 1885 and 1910. The thesis focuses mainly on style development at the crucial point of turning of the century. This period was the turning point when advanced school's art manifested and also time of generation change that transformed overall school atmosphere. A specific contribution of this thesis lies in outlining less known specialized schools, with inclusion of female element, which are factors that were not previously described elsewhere, as well as in attempt to find methodical and development analogies between Prague and Vienna School of Applied Arts. The aim of my thesis was to assess exceptional status of the school, especially in context of Czech educational system of decorative arts, and to evaluate historical context based on detailed archive research. I included in the thesis a comprehensive list of students of general and specialized schools of decorative arts, thus creating a foundation for future researchers on individual artistic personalities. Study of development of School of Applied Arts is an analytical synthesis presenting the specific role of decorative arts and crafts in pre-WWI era.

Vitráže Františka Urbana / František Urban's Stained Glass

František Urban (1868-1919) devoted himself mainly to religious painting, the majority of his production was commissioned by the Church. Among these, the least attention has been dedicated to his stained glass designs, with the exception of his most famous complex in the Cathedral of St Barbara in Kutná Hora. However, these designs were held in high regard among the commissioners and Urban drew them for almost twenty churches and chapels. The supreme phase of his production was caught and can be now accessed in a representative publication of his designs for churches, published 1907-1909 in two parts. Urban's style has been classified as Art Nouveau; it is, however, only a simplistic description. Urban used older elements and composition schemes, brought by the Nazarenes at the beginning of 19th century. These he repurposed for the Art Noveau style, using the typical flatness and delicate colouring, idealization, ornamental elements in the fashion of that time, and most of all the then so popular folklore motifs. Urban's wife, Marie Urbanová- Zahradnická, contributed to some of the ornamental elements. The study contrasts the architecture of the Art Nouveau period  1880-1915 with contemporary curvilinear computational designs created 1980-2015. This is done by examining similarities and differences in design context, methods, philosophy and forms. The study includes an analysis of the curved lines used in Art Nouveau architecture as well as comparative study of  the two periods’ building compositions, façades and ornamentation. The thesis tries to answer the following questions: Is it possible to identify significant forms or geometric markers in  the Art Nouveau architecture of the period 1890 to 1920? How do such markers differ from post 1980 computational curvilinear architecture? Is it possible to reinterpret Art Nouveau architecture today in a relevant way? / Denna studien kontrasterar Art Nouveau/ Jugendstil perioden 1880-1920 med dagens datorstödda design diskurs med fokus på den böjda linjen. Studien undersöker skillnader och likheter i kontext, metod, filosofi och form mellan de båda perioderna. In chronological sequenced chapters will show Arnošt Hofbauer's life story and describe his artistic development, among others it will also analyze foundation of S. V. U. Mánes, periodical Volné směry etc. In the end of the thesis I attached the catalogs of his work from public and private collections for a complete view of his work. The aim of this thesis is to present Hofbauer's creative work in the most integrated form and in cultural-historical context. I attempt to evaluate his position in the Czech art history.

This study looks at the degree to which Emile Galle's theories of symbolic ornamentation are observed in contemporary landscape architecture design. Galle's theories consist of three components: the first relates to the functional aspects of design, and the last two relate to the aesthetic aspects. These three components are used to evaluate three case studies. In the case studies, Bicentennial Commons in Cincinnati and Canal Walk in Indianapolis show a partial though apparent utilization of Galle's theories, while Riverwalk in Milwaukee comes closest of the three to demonstrating the application of Galle's theories in Landscape Architecture. However, none fully exhibit Galle's theories. Nonetheless, the case studies, and in particular Riverwalk, exhibit the initial stages of a renewed interest in ornamentation in which culture is symbolically represented through nature. 1 English Abstract Searching for Styles of National Architecture in Habsburg Central Europe 1890-1920 Art Nouveau and Turn-of-the-Century Architecture as Nation-Building This thesis examines aspirations of Central European nations to create architectural style, which would be particular to the given nation and would convey national spirit and character through architectural form. Inspired by social and cultural history, historians of architecture have recently begun to study conscious efforts of national elites to use architecture for nationalistic ends. Considerable attention has been paid to the interplay between national movements emerging in Europe before the World War I, and the concurrent developments in the field of architecture as signified by introduction of the Art Nouveau. However, most of these works focus on individual national building movement.
