Pedro II. As aquarelas, os desenhos e as litografias da expedição foram produzidos a partir da atuação do pintor José dos Reis Carvalho, do poeta Gonçalves Dias e dos naturalistas Francisco Freire Alemão e Manoel Ferreira Lagos. Ao compararmos o trabalho de José dos Reis Carvalho para a Comissão Científica de Exploração com as influências estéticas de sua época, nele iremos perceber que, ao tratar da questão da seca, expressou elementos próprios da realidade local e da cultura brasileira, ali identificadas com o sertanejo e seu modo de vida na aridez da caatinga. Como um ilustrador científico, mas com um padrão estético próprio, deu às suas obras um caráter histórico envolto de questões sociais da época e representou o homem em conflito com uma paisagem que o hostilizava. Por meio de artigos e manuscritos sob as questões climáticas e culturais relacionadas ao Ceará, e pela bibliografia adquirida pela Comissão Científica de Exploração, delimitamos o espaço documental que justificou a produção iconográfica do pintor voltada para o tema das secas e para os costumes locais. O poeta Gonçalves Dias compôs um indianismo no qual se voltou a reconstituir a identidade nacional através das reminiscências culturais das antigas tribos Tupis e Tapuias. Permitiu o nascimento de uma etnografia de caráter científico baseada nas características linguísticas, tecnológicas e estéticas destes povos antigos e presentes nos grupos indígenas existentes no período. Os artefatos que ele recolheu no Amazonas, remeteu ao Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro e foram litografados pelo Imperial Instituto Artístico, expressam a importância que estes objetos assumiram como documentos iconográficos relacionados à História da Cultura Brasileira que esteve motivada por uma ideologia nativista. O botânico Francisco Freire Alemão e o zoólogo Manoel Ferreira Lagos, além de promoverem a identificação e a classificação de diversas espécies da biodiversidade cearense, dedicaram-se a produzir registros visuais para inaugurarem uma produção bibliográfica ilustrada no Brasil que ainda era incipiente. O interesse pela aplicação das técnicas acadêmicas do desenho Freire Alemão manifestou em seus singelos desenhos de vilas e plantas presentes na Biblioteca Nacional e outros que foram publicados na revista Guanabara. No entanto, sua maior e mais relevante produção iconográfica relacionada à botânica está na sua Flora Cearense, um manuscrito de valioso valor estético e histórico / Abstract: This thesis refers to the iconography of the Scientific Exploration Commission sent to Ceará, from 1859 until 1861, by D.Pedro II. The watercolors, drawings and lithographs of the expedition were produced in the work of the painter José Carvalho dos Reis, the poet Gonçalves Dias along with the naturalists Francisco Freire Alemão and Manoel Ferreira Lagos. Comparing the work of José dos Reis Carvalho with the aesthetic influences of his age, we will realize that, when addressing the issue of drought, he attempted to identify in Brazilian culture the proper elements of the local reality. As a scientific illustrator, but with a proper aesthetic standard, promoted in his works a historical character of social issues in his epoch and represented the Brazilian man conflict with the hostile landscape. Through articles and manuscripts on themes related to Ceará climate and culture, and literature acquired by the Scientific Exploration Commission, we delimited a documental research that was justified by the painter iconographical production turned into issue of drought and local culture. The poet Gonçalves Dias wrote an Indianism in which the identity of Brazilian people was reconstructed through the cultural remnants of Tupi and Tapuias ancient tribes. He allowed the birth of an ethnography scientific nature based on linguistic features, technology and aestheticism of these ancient people in the indigenous groups presented in his time. The artifacts he has collected in the Amazon were sent to the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro and they were lithographed by the Imperial Art Institute, which express the importance of these objects as iconographic documents related to the history of art and culture in Brazil. The botanist Francisco Freire Alemão and the zoologist Manoel Ferreira Lagos, beyond promoting the identification and classification of several biodiversity species in Ceará, they produced visual records to inaugurate an illustrated bibliographical production in Brazil, which was still incipient at that. The interest of Freire Alemão, in applying the academic techniques of drawing, was expressed in his single drawing of villages and plants present in the National Library and others that were published in Guanabara. [pt] O artista Waltercio Caldas iniciou sua carreira no fim dos anos de 1960, tendo uma atuação marcante para o debate artístico ocorrido na década seguinte. Essa atuação se destaca, sobretudo, por dois motivos: 1 - contribuiu para redefinir o sentido experimental de nossa arte e sua relação com o meio artístico vigente naquela ocasião; 2 – colaborou para a construção de um conceito de contemporaneidade que já não se mostra mais eficiente em nossos dias. A sensação de esgotamento do projeto moderno e as aporias herdadas pelo contemporâneo, acabava por munir Waltercio de uma consciência crítica do lugar e papel das obras no meio artístico. Se de início a questão era buscar pela eficiência da arte, questionando os trabalhos em nível de instituição e mercado, com o tempo a situação se mostrou mais complexa. A forma agora deveria ser pensada desprovida de um télos e sem lugar na vida cultural contemporânea, como um momento específico do sistema de arte, sobretudo, do mercado. Diante dessa situação, Waltercio explora a presença dos trabalhos e a legibilidade estética numa época de espetacularização generalizada. Esta pesquisa surgiu de nosso interesse em refletir sobre o desenvolvimento de uma obra ainda em construção, estendendo-se de sua fase experimentalista da década de 1970 aos trabalhos mais recentes (2010). Nesse corte, procuramos destacar as estratégias poéticas que marcam conceitualmente a produção do artista e o estatuto de sua contemporaneidade hoje. / [en] The Brazilian artist Waltercio Caldas began his career in the late 1960s and his distinctive performance was very important to the artistic debate in the following years. His work is remarkable notably for two reasons. First of all, it contributed to redefine the experimental sense of the Brazilian art and its relation with the artistic environment of that period. Secondly, it introduced the concept of contemporaneity which has not been used so efficiently nowadays. The sensation of the exhaustion of the modern project and the contemporary contradictions empowered Waltercio of a critical consciousness about the place and role of his artworks in the art scene. If, at the beginning, Waltercio s main focus was to reach art efficiency by questioning works at institutions and market levels, later on the situation became more complex. From that moment onwards, the form should be thought without telos and place in the contemporary cultural life, since it was part of a specific moment of the art system and, specially, the market. In order to face this situation of generalized spectacularization, Waltercio explores the presence of the artworks and their aesthetic legitimacy. This critical study intends to reflect about the development of a work in progress from the 1970s to 2010s. Besides, this research will emphasize the poetic strategies that strongly influence his conceptual work and its contemporaneity today.

The work deals with the concept of beautiful style and its use in Czech literature of art history. Jaromír Pečírka introduced the term known from German professional literature to the Czech environment in the 1930s in relation to sculpture. It was applied to the history of Gothic painting by Antonín Matějček. After a short turnaround, associated with the name of Pavel Kropáček, the tradition of using the term was renewed by Jaroslav Pešina, who created a concept valid and recognized to this day. In relation to sculpture, Albert Kutal and his successor Jaromír Homolka had a similar role. The Czech specificity is the application of the term in relation to architecture, which was dealt with mainly by Dobroslav Líbal. Among the younger researchers, the work of Milena Bartlová, Jan Royt, Jan Klípa and Michaela Ottová is followed. The work follows individual concepts and their changes.

Chapter 1 reviews the background to the rise of art patronage studies and their development and its influence on studies of Chinese art history. It also provides alternative approaches to studying activities related to patronage and their influence and role in Chinese art history by criticising traditional analysis of Chinese art based on social and economic theories. / Chapter 2 examines the life of Wang and explores the intentions and meaning to his patronage activities through studying his political involvement, literary activities and his social background and connections. / Chapter 3 discusses how Wang, given his knowledge in history and passion for art and its collection, reinterprets art history with reference to his private collection of art, and thereby consolidating his status as a leading figure of literary and cultural circle of his time. / Chapter 4 explains and reflects on the formation of the "artist-patron" relationship through examining the relationship and interaction between Wang and the literary circle and by appraising the financial background and standing of artists and calligraphers at the time. / Chapter 5 examines the direct impact that Wang, as a literary leader and patron of the art, has on the styles and subject matter of art work by examining and decoding several pieces of art commissioned by himself, thus revealing a distinct mechanism in which art was produced at the time. / Chapter 6 discusses the "artist-patron" relationship and the "trading of cultural resources" by examining diverse pieces of art work given to Wang as gifts by different individual artists and calligraphers. / Chapter 7 analyses the significance of the patronage activities of Wang and provides a new approach to understanding the issue of traditional Chinese art patronage in Chinese art history. / Through a case study of the life of Wang Shizhen, this research attempts to analyse the influence of literary leader and patron of the arts on the development of painting and calligraphy during the mid-Ming period. By analysing the "artist-patron" relationship, this paper attempts to explain alternative mechanism through which traditional Chinese art was produced. The thesis also examines art patronage activities in Suzhou during the sixteenth century and thereby attempts to examine these activities from the broader cultural and historical context at the time. Society and its outsiders in the novels of Jakob Wassermann

This thesis looks at a number of Jakob Wassermann’s novels and the ways in which society is depicted in them. Seen as a whole, Wassermann’s oeuvre can therefore be understood as an attempt to portray (mostly) German society at different historical stages. The periods in question are Biedermeier Germany, the Wilhelmine era, the years of the Great War and finally the Weimar Republic, the depiction of all of which reveal Wassermann as a fierce critic of his time. In addition to this interest in society, this thesis will examine Wassermann’s concern with various outsider figures which complement his portrayals of society. The outsider figures Wassermann seems to be mostly interested in are the Jew, the woman, the child and the homosexual man. However, Wassermann is not just interested in these outsiders on their own but also draws extensive parallels between the various forms of exclusion they experience in a society dominated by the Gentile man or, as in the case of the child, by the adult. These parallels have proven to be revelatory and have led to new insights into Wassermann’s works. The dynamic of the outsider vs. society is, however, in many ways no longer applicable to those novels written during and after the Great War. Instead Wassermann now combines his interest in the figure of the outsider with an interest in the depiction of character. At the same time character becomes a mirror not only for the society Wassermann portrays in his writing but also for the society he lived in. This makes for an altogether more complex but also more intriguing structure of his later writing. This thesis will examine how all these different elements when combined offer new ways of looking at Wassermann’s writing.

1Lothar von Falkenhausen, Chinese Society in the Age of Confucius (1000-250 BC): The Archaeological Evidence (Los Angeles: Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, University of California, 2006). / Furthermore, differentiation of jades used among different social classes is also considered throughout these discussions. Finally, this research concludes with the discussion of the discourse of the existence of regional differences of jade from the Eastern Zhou period; the outcome of the "Restructuring" and the characteristics of jade excavated from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng. This research is the only in-depth study of the Marquis Yi's jades known to date and should fill a major gap thirty years after their excavation. / Lothar von Falkenhausen proposed that a political movement occurred around 600 B.C., which resembled the Late Western Zhou Ritual Reform (circa 850 B.C.). He entitled this movement "the Middle Springs and Autumns Ritual Restructuring." 1 This "Restructuring" was advocated by a group of rulers of local polities who wished to strengthen their newly established kingdoms and reinstate social order through the restoration of religious and ritual ceremonies of the Western Zhou period. The "Restructuring" was characterized by a shift of social hierarchy and a change in religious content which had significant impact on people's lives in Eastern Zhou society. The main intention of this research is to find out the characteristics of jades from the Eastern Zhou Period and their relationship with the "Restructuring". / The focus and starting point of this study is a group of jades excavated from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng (died 430 BC). This undisturbed tomb yielded nearly three hundreds pieces of jade; they were well preserved and were highly representative for their remarkable quality and workmanship. / The third section will look at the issues surrounding the use and understanding of archaic jades during this period. The "Restructuring" advocated the restoration of religious cult and ritual of Late Western Zhou period, which lead to the employment of archaic jade and motifs borrowed from bronzes as potent political symbol and legitimacy. The fourth section discusses the ways in which the emergence of new religious ideologies affected the manufacturing of jades for burial. The belief of the afterworld and the existence of soul affected the production of burial jades in terms of functions, form and style. These burial jades show that the religious transformation of the Qin and Han Dynasty was, in fact, originated during the Warring States Period. / This investigation proceeds from four major perspectives. The first section studies how the set of sumptuary rules in the ceremonial system established after the "Western Zhou Ritual Reform" have been restored by the ruling class after the "Restructuring". This research has revealed that a new ceremonial system has been established after the "Restructuring" to justify users' political and social status. The second section examines the changing roles of jade in everyday contexts after the "Restructuring", from the perspectives of its value, function, and significance in society. The research has shown that although the feudal system has collapsed gradually with rapid social mobilization, jades were mostly confined to the upper class during the entire Eastern Zhou period. A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for MA by Coursework and Research Report, Johannesburg, 2017 / This research report explores the influences of memory in selected works by two visual artists: South African Kemang Wa Lehulere’s Remembering the Future of a Hole as a Verb 2.1 and Polish artist Ursula von Rydingsvard’s Droga. The report examines the ways in which personal memory can inform creative practice and the surface difficulties such endeavours may present. These works and writings on memory and creative practice inform my own practice, through which I investigate ways of expressing my memories of my grandparents’ carpentry workshop in Sunnydale Eshowe in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. / XL2018
