The present research project aims at analysing the role played by the themes „love“ and „death“ in the context of schopenhauerian philosophy as a whole, by means of a close investigation of the development of Schopenhauer’s refletions on both themes since the beginnings of his philosophycal efforts. We shall try to determine in what measure may the theme of death have worked as first motivation and as an “original seed” for his philosophical especulations, as well as this theme’s profound imbrication with that of love, understood as life generating impulse. We are also interrested in both the naturalistic and the ethical approaches presented by Schopenhauer reflections on love and death. On the one hand, he gives us a naturalistic account of the mentioned problems, but soon, in the other hand, he leaves it clear that these problems have also an ethical dimension. In his explorations of that dimension, his thinking appears to be heavily supported by vedic philosophy. Thus, we shall also investigate how does Schopenhauer menage to articulate nature sciences and his vedic studies

_______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This essay aims at investigating the posthumous opuscule by Arthur Schopenhauer called Die Kunst, Recht zu Behalten (The Art of Being Right), in light of the main aspects of his doctrine, in particular his theory of knowledge and its aesthetical and ethical implications. The text is composed of 38 (thirty-eight) stratagems on dishonest reasoning, along with an introduction and a few notes, and it is estimated to have been written at some point between 1825 and 1830. Parts of the manuscript were published on the second edition of Parerga and Paralipomena in 1862. Two years later, the full text of his manuscript (without a title) was published by Julius Frauenstädt, Schopenhauer’s disciple. Little studied in Brazil, the eristic dialectics has been dealt with in a more comic than serious way by the Brazilian book market, given the sort of mocking approach advocated by most of Brazilian editions of the text. Thus, hereby work draws to itself the task of understanding the manuscript in a deeper way, as a solid complement to the rest of the philosopher of Danzig’s work, rather than a mere propaganda by Schopenhauer with a view to attack the German academic philosophy.

Dall'Alba, Anderson Cláudio January 2017 (has links)
In the history of Modern Architecture, the Paulista architect Oswaldo Bratke is generally mentioned by his residential works. Among his most highlighted projects, the houses designed by him, throughout the 1950s, in the district of Morumbi, in São Paulo, were recognized, nationally and internationally, as important contributions to Modern Brazilian Architecture. However, it is less known that such residences were linked to the way in which Bratke imagined the occupation of that part of the city, which has developed, simultaneouly, with the active participation of the architect in specific urbanization plans for some neighborhoods. In the consolidated historiographical field, the panorama of Bratke’s work has already been documented in the comprehensive researches and publications of Camargo (1995, 2000) and Segawa and Dourado (1997, 2012 2. ed.). However, this dissertation considers that Bratke’s designs to Morumbi still deserve more attention, and it seeks to discuss them from a joint analysis, which can provide subsidies to a better understanding of their relations and, above all, of the solutions adopted by him in the designs of the houses. In summary, the material elaborated in this study complements the documentation that already exists, but its main objective is to contribute to broadening the understanding of Bratke’s modern architecture.

Arthur Rackham: English illustrator

Unknown Date (has links)
"Arthur Rackham was selected as the subject for this study because of the writer's interest in his unique drawings and because of a feeling that others may find of some use a paper which treats of the artist of fairyland. The attempt has been made to assemble from the writings of Rackham's contemporaries and his modern critics representative reviews, opinions and reactions to the illustrations for children's books. Since many of the books Rackham illustrated were reprints, the critics were influenced by previous illustrators and in such writings are found the best comparisons of Rackham's work to that of other artists"--Introduction. / Typescript. / "August, 1958." / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts." / Advisor: Agnes Gregory, Professor Directing Paper. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 59-62).

Schopenhauer und Nietzsche : negative und positive Freiheit durch Anerkennung ; eine Untersuchung struktureller Parallelen und Differenzen in der Konzeption der Verhältnisse Ich - Welt, Ich - Zeit, Ich - Dialektik / Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Predetermination. Indetermination. Self-Determination.

Klöwer, Ralph January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
My dissertation: "Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Predetermination, Indetermination, Self-Determination" aims at bringing out to which extent Nietzsches philosophy is enrooted in and indebted to the work of his former tutor.

The concept of the self in the metaphysics of Charles Arthur Campbell

Frazier, Allie Mitchell January 1963 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this dissertation is an exposition and critical analysis of the concept of 'substantival' self in the philosophy of Charles Arthur Campbell. Campbell contends that the self is known only inferentially, as a necessary precondition for the experiences of cognition, succession in time, and memory. The self is not reducible to its experiences, but is something 'over and above' its empirical manifestation. The manifested self is distinguishable from the subject self not simply in the analysis of the experience of cognition, succession in time, and memory, but also by the self's immediate apprehension of creative transcendance of 'formed character' in 'self-activity proper' [TRUNCATED]

Le Morte d'Americana

Choi, Karen January 2019 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Robert Stanton / The timelessness of the Arthurian tradition lends itself to adaptability: hundreds of authors over the centuries have inherited the tales and adjusted them to his or her society’s needs. Sir Thomas Malory lived during the War of Roses, a period of upheaval and violence. While imprisoned, he wrote Le Morte d’Arthur, which was inspired from the French romances. He emphasized the ideals of chivalry, brotherhood, loyalty, and order, which had been eroded in contemporary society. From Malory’s stories, Tennyson created Idylls of the King, resurrecting a medieval world to edify Victorian society. Through Guinevere’s affair, Tennyson attempted to revive the idea of courtly love and the importance of pursuing the purest form of love, which he juxtaposed against King Arthur who was the model gentleman for Victorian society. My novel, Le Morte d'Americana carries on the tradition of taking the most important pieces of the Arthurian tradition and weaving them together with the most pressing issues of modern American society. I have mainly focused on Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, using characters and themes from these texts to craft Le Morte d’Americana. Arthur and his knights and the violence that surrounds them translate into the issues of police brutality, gun violence, and toxic masculinity. This novel is a bridge between the past and present. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. Angličtí intelektuálové ve víru revoluční Francie: Interpretace politických událostí z pohledu součastníků / The English Intellectuals in the Whirl of Revolutionary France: Interpretation of Political Events from the Perspective of Contemporaries

Borodáčová, Jana January 2014 (has links)
This Diploma thesis focuses on the investigation of impact of French Revolution into the development of political views of three Englishmen who represent three levels of view of revolutionary events: idealistic, radical and critical. Helen Maria Williams (1761-1827) represents an idealistic school of thought especially within the idea on universal citizenship and messianism of French Revolution. Simultaneously, she also represents some opinions of female population and their expectations relating to the status of women. Thomas Paine (1737-1809), a member of Convention and a supporter of the Girondists is an example of a radical religious view. The last of the trio is a physiocrat and a writer Arthur Young (1741-1820) who visited France before the Revolution. He became a witness and also a critic of the early revolutionary events. Key Words Helen Maria Williams, Thomas Paine, Arthur Youn, The French Revolution.
