Other identities : portrayals from the past and what remains in the present : an extended essay presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the post-graduate degree of Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Hudson, Sarah Peti Sian January 2010 (has links)
How can the reintroduction of colonial depictions of Maori women in early twentieth century postcards engage a modern audience in a dialogue concerning the aestheticisation of Maori women, both past and present? Drawing on questions incited by the visual representation of my own family, the constructs of photographic depictions of Maori women in early 1900’s postcards will be examined. The correlation between the past and present will be the focus of this essay as the research considers whether the romantic, ancient ideals imposed onto Maori women by male colonialist photographers are still apparent in the present.

Making as a tool of self-examination and search for meaning : sifting through remaining residue as the tide of faith ebbs away : an exegesis presented with exhibition as fulfilment of the requirements for thesis Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

McGrath, Shane Michael January 2010 (has links)
At the commencement of this thesis I saw myself standing at the outer limits of my knowledge with my nose pressed against a wall of demarcation. This wall was built from my willingness to tolerate systems of control in silence and from my unwillingness to make my beliefs and personal convictions known. I set out at the start of this journey with two intentions. I want to raise my voice because I didn’t want to pretend about my faith anymore. And for the first time use my art practice as a mouthpiece to tell these truths.

Uměleckoprůmyslová škola v Praze a její ateliéry v letech 1890-1910 / School of Applied Art and its studios in the years 1890 - 1910

Sklenářová Teichmanová, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The theme of this thesis is History of School of Applied Arts studios in Prague between 1885 and 1910. The thesis focuses mainly on style development at the crucial point of turning of the century. This period was the turning point when advanced school's art manifested and also time of generation change that transformed overall school atmosphere. A specific contribution of this thesis lies in outlining less known specialized schools, with inclusion of female element, which are factors that were not previously described elsewhere, as well as in attempt to find methodical and development analogies between Prague and Vienna School of Applied Arts. The aim of my thesis was to assess exceptional status of the school, especially in context of Czech educational system of decorative arts, and to evaluate historical context based on detailed archive research. I included in the thesis a comprehensive list of students of general and specialized schools of decorative arts, thus creating a foundation for future researchers on individual artistic personalities. Study of development of School of Applied Arts is an analytical synthesis presenting the specific role of decorative arts and crafts in pre-WWI era.

Responsibility, Participation, and Social Engagement: Women's Capacity-Building Programs in Johannesburg, South Africa / Women's Capacity-Building Programs in Johannesburg, South Africa

Sharp, Deborah Carryl, 1973- 12 1900 (has links)
xvi, 139 p. : ill. (some col.), col. maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis explores the empowerment effects of arts-and-crafts programs targeting women in Johannesburg, South Africa, focusing mainly on one case study: Boitumelo Sewing Project. Interviews with participants, facilitators, and management reveal that empowerment manifests in Boitumelo Project primarily in individual and collective forms, though also on an economic level to a limited degree. While many development projects focus on economic empowerment, this research suggests that other forms of empowerment may be even more important in the long term. Economic empowerment helps people meet short-term responsibilities, but it is through individual and collective empowerment that personal and community forms of healing take place, enabling people to engage more successfully in society overall. In light of this, I argue that development projects should focus on engendering genuine participatory empowerment on both the individual and collective levels in order to increase sustainability and development success in the long term. / Committee in Charge: Dr. Anita M. No. of bitstreams: 1 Wendell Rodrigues Costa.pdf: 1893651 bytes, checksum: 0200c0289e0f82e9f533f37a96edc663 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This work aims to understand why and how the Society of Mechanical Artists and Liberals sought to promote the development of the teaching of crafts in Pernambuco. To do so, we proceeded to an analysis of the Society of the Artists, from its formation to its commitment to manage the School of Arts and Crafts (Liceu de Artes e Ofícios). The analytical course proved to be the Society of Artists not only the beneficiary of the public funds to finance the activities of the School, but also left some visible conflicts arising from the relationship of Society with the government - in the person of the inspector - and with some partners and students. The first question was to know how the leaders of the Society took care of the public funds to manage the School. Then, we tried to understand why, in many situations, the officers asked the government to extinguish the post of inspector of the School of Arts and Crafts. This present research approaches the theoretical perspective proposed by the French philosopher Michel Foucault, due to his large study on biopower and the effect on the discipline. With the foucauldian concept of biopower, it was possible to understand the position of the Brazilian State as manager of the society. The dissertation was drawn from the analysis of sources such as documents of the Society of the Mechanical Artists and Liberals and reports relating to the supervision of the School of Arts and Crafts. The clipping researched is between 1880 to 1908, covering the period since the inauguration of the School of Arts and Crafts till the end of the inspection of the inspector Francisco Augusto Pereira da Costa. With the survey, we could understand that the inspection directed to the Society of the Artists had the intention to make the School provide to the working classes a vocational training that would meet the labor market. From the research procedures and the results obtained, it is evident that despite the conflicts in which they became involved, the Society of Artists bequeathed to Brazil from the First Republic, through the School of Arts and Crafts, an educational establishment that resting in the pedagogy of work, produced a workforce able to meet the sectors of industry and commerce.

Umělecké řemeslo Střední Asie na příkladu sbírky Náprstkova muzea / Arts and Crafts of Central Asia on the Example of the Náprstek's Museum Colection

Hejzlarová, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
The Central-Asian region, in current geo-political signification understood as the territory of five Post-Soviet states: Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and partially of Kazakhstan, has went through a very rich and colorful historical development. During this development it has absorbed many different culture impulses and influences that helped the region to develop conditions for the formation of a distinctive artistic expression. To a certain extent, we can observe continuity in the development of traditional arts and crafts professions since early historical times until today. Among the most important craft branches we need to mention textile production, involving carpet weaving, processing of felt, fabrics and embroideries, and also artistic metal processing represented particularly by the jewelry production and last but not least, ceramics production. Arts and crafts have always had a very important position in the history and culture of Central Asia. Craftwork has been a subject of trade for a very long time period here, this fact being enhanced by the geographical position as well, since the region is situated on the route of the famous Silk Road. Arts and craft production, which comprised of common goods but also exclusive products of high artistic value, intended for the...

Starověký šperk Střední Asie a jeho vztahy ke šperkařskému umění anitického Středomoří / Ancient Jewellery of Central Asia and its relations to the Jewellers' art of Ancient Mediterranean.

Belaňová, Petra January 2015 (has links)
Central Asia, crossroads of ancient trade routes known as the Silk Road, absorbed for centuries the pulses of travelling cultural influences and created an environment for the existence of original artistic expression, which can be seen in jewellery making as well. The dissertation thesis deals with analysis of the findings from excavation units and individual pieces of jewellery, in most cases made of gold, which were often largely inspired by the culture of the ancient Mediterranean. The historical - geographic perspective of the work is focused primarily on territory of ancient Bactria and Gandhara - southern part of the former Soviet republics of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, then northern and eastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. These areas were in the past centers of military activities and political formations, followed up in many aspects on the Mediterranean traditions. These political formations contributed distinctly to the dissemination and preservation of some elements of ancient cultural heritage in Central Asian architecture, sculpture and other fine arts and crafts. Most jewelry findings come from a fairly turbulent period of the 1st century AD, when the territory of Central Asia saw the progressive formation of Kushan Empire. The main part of the thesis consists of summary of the...

Lektionen der Vergangenheit - Das Arts and Crafts Movement x Nachhaltigkeit

Ninnis, Kaja 29 June 2022 (has links)
Eine Rebellion gegen das ‚machine age‘ – als solche verstand sich das Arts and Crafts Movement, das sich in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts in England herausbildete.
