Coarse-grained rocks of Ascension Island

Harris, Christopher January 1982 (has links)
The lavas and pyroclastics of Ascension Island contain a suite of coarse grained igneous blocks which range in composition from olivine-gabbro to peralkaline-granite paralleling, but extending beyond the compositional range of the volcanics. The lavas range from alkali-basalt through hawaiite, trachybasalt, trachyandesite and trachyte to comendite. True basalt is relatively rare and there is a scarcity of analyses with 57 < Si02 < 63 wt %. No high pressure mineral assemblages and hence no possible mantle fragments have been found. Petrographic and isotopic data suggest that a suite of gabbros from Dark Slope Crater crystallised from a magma derived from a MORB-like source. The remaining blocks and all the lavas evolved from magmas derived from a less depleted source. The chemical variation seen in the lavas and blocks is best explained by crystal fractionation mechanisms in a relatively shallow magma chamber. The gabbroic blocks exhibit cumulus textures suggesting that they formed by accumulation of settling crystals. The intermediate to acid blocks compare much more closely in composition with the evolved lavas and are probably their slowly cooled equivalents. There is petrographic evidence that partial melting of intermediate coarse grained material gave rise to melts of granitic composition but these are not chemically equivalent to the acid lavas and blocks. A pegmatoid body crystallised in situ and closed system crystal fractionation alone resulted in a very similar sequence of mineral assemblages to the blocks and lavas and a peralkaline final liquid. High 87 S4/ 86 Sr ratios in the evolved lavas and blocks are attributable to contamination by a small quantity of highly radiogenic oceanic sediment. Comparison with other oceanic volcanoes suggests that these differentiation processes are much less important in determining the evolutionary path of the magma than its apparent starting composition.

Vertical Regionalism: A Pilgrimage in Canada’s Western Mountains

Erickson, Mark 07 July 2011 (has links)
Wilderness is defined as being "a wild or uncultivated region or tract of land, uninhabited, or inhabited only by wild animals" (Oxford English Dictionary 1989). But just how natural is the concept of wilderness? the idea of conserving nature suggests that we think of ourselves as something 'other' than nature, but the truth is that nature is our origin, and although this is often forgotten, it is a connection that is deeply rooted in our being. I am interested in finding an architecture that speaks to our most primal memories, acting to locate humans within nature. Through the creation of 3 mountain refuges, each a point in a larger path of pilgrimage, I will explore the connections that we as humans can share with the Canadian mountain wilderness. / This thesis is sited in Jumbo Creek Valley, British Columbia in the Purcell Mountains.

The Obedience of Sonship : Adamic Obedience as the Grounds for Heavenly Ascension in the Book of Hebrews

Bertolet, Timothy J. January 2018 (has links)
This thesis makes a unique contribution in the field of New Testament studies with specific attention to New Testament theology and the Christology of Hebrews. It explores the relationship between Sonship and the ascension in the book of Hebrews. It argues that the ascension of Jesus reveals the nature of his Sonship. First, chapters two and three of this study examine the Sonship of Jesus in Hebrews 1. It portrays Jesus as both the Messianic and the divine eternal Son. While recent scholarship has questioned whether the Son in Hebrews is a divine Sonship, this thesis demonstrates that Hebrews portrays Jesus as divine. Second, this study argues that Heb. 2 contains a “Second Adam Christology.” The Son shares in true humanity and is appointed to fulfill the destiny of humanity. In this humanity, he is crowned with glory and honor in fulfillment of Ps. 8. The Son stands in solidaric representation of the people of God. This second Adam function is both kingly and priestly as representative who leads God’s people to this glory. Third, as this eschatological man who is crowned as king and priest the Son ascends into heaven. This is set against the background of apocalyptic literature where heaven is a temple and the dwelling place of God. The Son is portrayed in Hebrews as ascending into a true tabernacle that is heaven itself. He enters heaven as both king and priest of the age to come because he himself has first come to participate in the age to come. Finally, the study demonstrates that the obedience of the Son qualifies him for his ascension and eschatological ‘perfection.’ We argue that the theme of obedient trust and crying out to God is an Adamic-Davidic role with a Psalmic background. We conclude, in the book of Hebrews, Christ is the eternal Son who also functions in the Adam-David role of sonship. His actions as the true human exercising trust and obedience qualify him to ascend up into heaven crowned with humanity’s eschatological glory. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria 2018. / New Testament Studies / PhD / Unrestricted

A ascensão do conhecimento humano no De libero arbitrio de Agostinho de Hipona / The ascension of human knowledge in the Augustin of Hippos De libero arbitrio

Pignatari, Roberto Carlos 18 September 2014 (has links)
E, assim como o instante, ao instituir a totalidade temporal, é figuração da eternidade2, o conhecimento em ascensão perfaz e figura a absolutidade na veracidade, através da percepção imediata e perenemente simultânea ao seu perfazimento da totalidade da ordenação harmoniosa e universal dos seres (De ordine); da funcionalidade do ato imaginativo presente na simultaneidade verificada entre as percepções sensível/concreta e interior/espiritual (De quantitate animae); bem como nos sobreditos atos de condução e julgamento efetuados no perfazimento do conhecimento universal (De líbero arbitrio) / This dissertation intends see the occurrence of the itinerary of souls ascension in the knowledge of truth and science, according to the description given in De libero arbitrio, with suport in the parallels lectures presents in the dialogues De ordine and De quantitate animae, composed in the Augustines Cassissiacum - Rome period (386-396 AD). Referring to intelectual ascension exposted in Book II of De libero arbitrio, and based on the notions of driving/guide and judgment/institution, in the rational way, we verified like the itinerary of the soul in probatory knowledge of divine reality shows, in addition to climbing \"hierarchical elevation\" of a sensibility to God, the knowledge of how the movement of factoring of reality known in eternity, as the reason rests and is founded on the eternal and unchangeable truth, and every cognitive act is driven/oriented and award/established by reason, which, ultimately, is equivalent to saying that eternity is known totals in this reality, precisely in the temporal instant that one recognizes any knowledge as true. For this purpose, it is to see how, at each level of knowledge on the rise, the next step is supposed to - actually contains and makes up reasons it - the previous, so that the subsequent necessary step and permanently, ratifies and awards the previous step. And just like the instant, by introducing the temporal totality, is like a previous or figuration of eternity, also knowledge and totals rising figure the absoluteness truthfulness through the immediate perception - and its perennially simultaneous factoring - the totality of universal and harmonious ordering of beings (De ordine); the functionality of the imaginative act in this concomitance observed between sensitives perceptions and interiority (De quantitate animae); as well as the aforesaid acts of conduct and judgment made in making of universal knowledge (De libero abitrio)

The Paths to Power in the Chinese Communist Party

Chun, Philip 01 January 2014 (has links)
China’s current crop of leaders has inherited a country full of promise. After the disastrous socialist transformation under Mao, Deng Xiaoping and his successors have implemented large scale, successful economic and social reforms and in less than two generations brought China to the forefront of the global economy. As a result they have gartered most of the praise, glory, and often, economic windfall, associated with China’s success. The goal of this thesis is to examine the complex, non-linear fashion in which China’s top leadership is chosen, and explore the best possible paths to ascend the ranks of the Chinese Communist Party. An investigation of China’s current governing leaders’ paths to power will be included to illuminate how various factors including merit, patronage, institutional role, and luck play a part in the ultimate makeup of China’s top leadership. Key findings show that family pedigree, faction loyalty, and exceptional performance in important roles, especially in provincial governments are the most influential variables when predicting Chinese leadership.
