De Villiers, Corinne 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Current technological development has a strong impact on education. Students normally have free access to computers and the internet. Computer-based instruction is more frequently available in classrooms and reinforces the traditional educational systems. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a computer-based program, Auralia 2.1, can be used effectively in the Music Certificate Course of the University Stellenbosch. Due to limited time during lessons as well as time-constraints for individual practising by the students, the researcher investigated the efficacy of Auralia 2.1 for use in the classroom. Students are able to practise individually during lessons as well as on their own. The problem to find a peer to practise aural training is therefore avoided as the computer fulfills this function. The researcher administered Auralia 2.1 on a group of eight Certificate students from the University Stellenbosch. The evaluation period consisted of two semesters of fourteen weeks each. The researcher used the traditional method of aural training in the first semester and she used Auralia 2.1-sessions in the second semester. The researcher compared the two semesters to each other to ensure the integrity of the results of the research. The researcher systematically held record of observations as well as the progress of the students. Questionnaires were completed and interviews were held as part of the evaluation process. Suggestions are made in this thesis on how Auralia 2.1 can be used effectively for educational aims.

Smit, Ineke 02 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the modern Western world, secondary and tertiary learners generally have ready access to the use of computers, multimedia and the Internet. As a means to strengthen traditional education, computer-based methods and materials are increasingly being used in the education system and are also strongly recommended by many educational experts. The use of such electronic educational means has however resulted in various changes to the education system. Music educators, too, are subject to these changes. The aim of this study is to determine the extent to which computer-based education can contribute to the strengthening of traditional music education of the Western world. To this end, it is necessary to ascertain, in practice, the value of using computer-based material for the purpose of music education. A multimedia database of Xhosa music terminology was created in the Music Department of Stellenbosch University, with high school learners and undergraduate students as target group. In this thesis, the value of this database, as an example of computer-based material for music education, is assessed. It is intended to extend the database at a later stage through the addition of music terminology from other indigenous music cultures. In its current form, the database thus forms part of a larger whole and is not viewed as a completed enterprise. On the basis of the literature that was studied for the investigation, it is determined whether the multimedia database for Xhosa music terminology measures up to the criteria for effective computer-based programmes. Suggestions are also made for improving the database to ensure a more useful and user-friendly product.

The use of computerised games analysis to identify critical indicators of success in elite level netball

Uys, Stefanie M. (Stefanie Margaretha) January 2001 (has links)
Thesis (MScSportSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Netball is a fast and skilful team sport in which players need to be "quickthinking", because they are required to make fast and accurate decisions in ever-changing situations. Netball is a highly tactical game. Therefore the game has to be analysed on all levels of play. During every game or training session the coach has to look for those factors that influence performance and determine success. Methods of games analysis have been improved through the development of video and computer technology, in order to help coaches gather critical data. This study will utilise games analysis as a method for gaining insight into what kinds of "critical incidents" on a netball court lead a team to either score a goal, or to allow the opponent to score against them. Four expert coaches analysed game play from three top-level international netball matches in order to identify the reasons for success/failure during game play. A computer-based games analysis system was used to identify the reasons for losing ball possession during the same games analysed by the experts. The results of computer-based games analysis was compared to the analysis provided by elite coaches in order to determine the value of the technology in providing relevant information. These identified key performance indicators were then ranked according to frequency. Additional games statistics were generated, using games analysis. This knowledge will not only contribute to an understanding of how technology can support coaching, but it will also expand our understanding of the tactics of netball and thus contribute to coaches' efforts to teach players how to make "good decisions". An important by-product of this study was the identification of the key performance indicators that influence success/failure in netball. This knowledge should help coaches determine what kinds of tactical learning situations are important to include in practice sessions. It is the coach's responsibility to develop thinking players. On court - during a game - it is the players' responsibility to read the game and make instant decisions. Also during the game - during time outs and half time- it is the coach's responsibility to give the players feedback on their decision-making and to make suggestions for improvements. Both roles require effective analysis of the game. Keywords: netball; games analysis; technology / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Netbal is 'n vinnige vaardigheidspel. Beide rolle, as afrigter of speier, vereis effektiewe wedstrydanalise. Sleutelwoorde: netbal; wedstrydanalise; tegnologie / jfl201407

On the feasibility of Moodle use to assist deaf and hard of hearing Grade 9 learners with mathematics problem-solving

Damon, Nolan Brandon 03 1900 (has links)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis sets out to examine Moodle use to assist Deaf and Hard of Hearing Grade 9 learners with understanding mathematics problem-solving. The methodology used in this research project is that of formative evaluation. In this qualitative data analysis I worked as a participant-observer with three Deaf and H/H Grade 9 learners from a local school for the Deaf and H/H. These learners engaged in a course constructed in Moodle based on ratio and rate. The course was designed along the lines of a constructivist pedagogical model, different levels of learning as well as including multi representational features. Through the qualitative analysis of the interviews conducted with learners who participated in the research project and observation done by the teacher researcher, three categories emerged i.e. Weaknesses, Potential strengths and Learner suggestions. Although the findings indicate that different factors negatively impact Deaf and H/H learners’ ability to solve mathematics problems, it also highlights the representational features of mathematics content via Moodle, and how it can assist Deaf and H/H learners with the struggle with mathematics problem-solving.
