Development of a quality management system framework for dental assisting education in South Africa

Muslim, Tufayl Ahmed 28 May 2014 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Master of Technology: Quality, Durban University of Technology, 2014. / There has been a call from society for both the provision of a quality education and for a quality “student” who can contribute to the economy and citizenry of South Africa. It therefore makes sense for any educational structure to develop and adopt, strategies and systems in order to meet these new calls, and to provide technologically relevant education that will meet the demands of modern society. This has led to a renewed need for consistency, conformity and quality within higher education. Concerns about students’ capabilities have been raised, and have led to questions about the accountability of higher education institutions. A quality management system framework may ensure that these higher education structures are able to deliver a quality education to their external and internal customers. This research investigated the current quality management systems used in dental assisting both locally and world-wide, and then developed a quality management system framework to suit South African conditions. An action research study, using data gathered from a purposive census sample, and data obtained by means of a mixed-method approach, was conducted in two phases. A preliminary study (Part A) was conducted amongst the four South African dental assisting education programme providers and deficiencies in the quality management systems of these programmes were identified. The preliminary work (Part B) in this study consisted of a comparative analysis of the quality management systems of a convenience sample of dental assisting education providers in twenty countries. Both good practices and deficiencies in practices were identified. A further review of the literature identified possible solutions to improve the quality of the dental assisting education programmes, and was used as the foundation for the development of the Dental Assisting Higher Education – Quality Management Framework (DAHE-QMF). The results of the preliminary study - the comparative analysis and the literature review - revealed that the development and implementation of a quality management system framework for dental assisting in South Africa could lead to an improvement of the standards of training, and thus the competence of the student. The framework will be presented to the four programme leaders at the four Universities of Technology that offer dental assisting education for their consideration of partial/total adaptation of the framework.

Zašová - klášter v rukách veřejnosti / Zašová - monastery in the hands of the public

Šebestová, Pavla January 2017 (has links)
The project deals with the reconstruction of the former monastery Trinitářského of the order and of the downstream area of the village Zašová. The purpose of remodeling is to create a proposal, which would consist of center socially needed social services and sufficiently, would use the hidden potential of the premises. The subject of the solution are, in particular, objects owned by the municipality, i.e. the actual monastery building, a former school building of the economic objects and the extensive convent garden. In solution is also included consideration of intending over the potential involvement of the parish building and the baroque church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary into the overall idea of the concept. The whole design is trying to cater to the needs of the community, and to highlight also its development potential in the context of the wider surrounding area.

Putzke, Enrico 04 December 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Advanced synthetic materials, in the shape of synthetic high-performance fibers, are well established in areas such as leisure sports (climbing, sailing), maritime technology (anchor lines, load lines) and reinforced protective equipment (ballistics, protective work clothing). The introduction of high-performance fibers in other fields of application is hindered by deficiencies in the material behavior of the fibers themselves. Whereas the problem of inner wear of the textile-semi-finished products, due to tension and bending loads, causes mutual harm to the fibers. This is considered being the main obstacle to the further spread of textile structures made of synthetic high-performance polymers among users and developers. It can be assumed that a significantly increase of lifetime, of e.g. fiber ropes and narrow fabrics, can be achieved if it succeeds, to exclude certain damage mechanisms such as aging resulting from radiation, aggressive media influences and inner wear. Since any subsequently equipment or modification of high-performance fibers by the manipulators (e.g. rope factory) or individual deployments by the manufacturer are excluded, the following general conditions are suggested for the development of approaches in this work. The modification of the final textile product is not been carried out due to changes on the high-performance fiber, but by additionally introduced assisting fibers. Introducing the assisting fibers to the textile product needs to be carried out on textile technology in common ways on existing machinery. The modification of the assisting fibers will be carried out, primarily through commercially available additives, during compounding in the melt spinning process. This paper will first attempt to capture the effect of dynamic load processes on textile-based tension and hoist members, made of high-performance fibers. After recording the damage structure, the equipped assisting fibers are characterized then. The investigations are including such mechanical and physical parameters, which are crucial in the expected tribological system of high-performance fiber and assisting fibers.

Textile-enabled Bioimpedance Instrumentation for Personalised Health Monitoring Applications

Ferreira Gonzalez, Javier January 2013 (has links)
A growing number of factors, including the costs, technological advancements, an ageing population, and medical errors are leading industrialised countries to invest in research on alternative solutions to improving their health care systems and increasing patients’ life quality. Personal Health System (PHS) solutions envision the use of information and communication technologies that enable a paradigm shift from the traditional hospital-centred healthcare delivery model toward a preventive and person-centred approach. PHS offers the means to follow patient health using wearable, portable or implantable systems that offer ubiquitous, unobtrusive bio-data acquisition, allowing remote access to patient status and treatment monitoring. Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI) technology is a non-invasive, quick and relatively affordable technique that can be used for assessing and monitoring different health conditions, e.g., body composition assessments for nutrition. EBI technology combined with state-of-the-art advances in sensor and textile technology are fostering the implementation of wearable bioimpedance monitors that use functional garments for the implementation of personalised healthcare applications. This research studies the development of a portable EBI spectrometer that can use dry textile electrodes for the assessment of body composition for the purposes of clinical uses. The portable bioimpedance monitor has been developed using the latest advances in system-on-chip technology for bioimpedance spectroscopy instrumentation. The obtained portable spectrometer has been validated against commercial spectrometer that performs total body composition assessment using functional textrode garments. The development of a portable Bioimpedance spectrometer using functional garments and dry textile electrodes for body composition assessment has been shown to be a feasible option. The availability of such measurement systems bring closer the real implementation of personalised healthcare systems. /
QC 20130405
