Anéis de crescimento do lenho de árvores como monitores ambientais: avaliação temporal e espacial da poluição atmosférica na cidade de Paulínia, São Paulo / Tree rings as environmental monitors: temporal and spatial assessment of air pollution in Paulínia city, São Paulo

O presente estudo tem por objetivo aplicar a análise dos anéis de crescimento de espécies arbóreas no monitoramento ambiental de uma área urbana com histórico de poluição atmosférica. Foram selecionadas árvores das espécies Caesalpinia pluviosa var. peltophoroides (Fabaceae-Caesalpinaceae) e Tabebuia pentaphylla (Bignoniaceae) e, do seu tronco, foram extraídas amostras do lenho através do método não destrutivo. A área de estudo selecionada foi o Distrito Industrial de Betel, município de Paulínia/SP, Brasil, cujo histórico de poluição ambiental de origem antropogênica é fornecido pela Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental (CETESB) e através de estudos recentes encontrados na literatura especializada. Ainda, foram selecionas três outras áreas, nos municípios de Paulínia e Piracicaba, distantes em 10, 15 e 60 km, estabelecendo-se um gradiente ambiental de pressão antrópica. Foram aplicadas as análises: (i) caracterização anatômica macro e microscópica e densitometria de raios X, na identificação dos anéis de crescimento do lenho, (ii) dendrocronológica, na datação e avaliação do crescimento radial das árvores, (iii) climática, no estudo da influência dos fatores climáticos no crescimento anual das árvores e (iv) química, na determinação da composição de macro e micronutrientes e de elementos potencialmente tóxicos nos anéis de crescimento do lenho, através da aplicação das técnicas analíticas espectrometria de emissão óptica com plasma induzido por laser (LIBS) e espectrometria de emissão óptica por plasma acoplado indutivamente (ICP OES). Os resultados indicaram que, para as duas espécies, os anéis de crescimento possuem características anatômicas marcantes, correlacionadas com os valores de densidade aparente, que possibilitam a determinação da idade das árvores. A análise das séries temporais de largura de anéis de crescimento demonstrou que as árvores apresentam crescimento sincrônico, condicionado as condições específicas do ambiente onde estão crescendo. A constatação da ausência de um sinal climático comum determinando o crescimento das árvores nos 3 sítios sugere a influência de outros fatores, entre eles, a proximidade em que as árvores se encontram em relação às fontes estacionárias de poluição atmosférica, verificada através dos valores de incremento radial obtidos, sempre menores para as árvores localizadas no Distrito de Betel. A análise da composição química dos anéis de crescimento (ICP OES) revelou diferenças na absorção de elementos químicos entre as árvores das duas espécies e também entre as árvores da mesma espécie crescendo em diferentes locais. Ainda, a avaliação dos valores de intensidade das linhas de emissão dos analitos identificou padrões temporais de fixação de elementos químicos no lenho, com tendência comum para alguns, nos sítios de menor influência antrópica. Também, evidenciou os períodos de maior fixação de elementos com potencial tóxico no troco das árvores (ex. Al, B, Cu, Fe e Na), relacionados com os anos do início das atividades indústrias no Distrito de Betel. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo permitiram concluir que a análise dos anéis de crescimento das árvores de C. pluviosa e T. pentaphylla possui grande potencial no monitoramento ambiental. / This study aims to apply tree rings analysis on environmental monitoring of an urban area with air pollution history. Caesalpinia pluviosa var. peltophoroides (Fabaceae- Caesalpinaceae) and Tabebuia pentaphylla (Bignoniaceae) trees were selected and wood samples were extracted from their trunk by a non-destructive method. The study area was the Industrial District of Bethel, Paulínia, São Paulo State, Brazil. Its environmental pollution history of anthropogenic origin is provided by the Company of Environmental Sanitation Technology (CETESB) and by recent studies of specialized literature. Three other areas in the municipalities of Paulínia and Piracicaba were also selected, establishing an environmental gradient of anthropogenic pressure within 10, 15 and 60 km distance. The following analyses were applied: (i) macro and microscopic anatomical characterization and X-ray densitometry, for tree rings limits identification (ii) dendrochronological, in dating and evaluating of radial growth, (iii) climatic, analyzing the climatic factors influence on annual growth and (iv) chemical, determining the composition of macro and micronutrients and potentially toxic elements in the tree rings through the application of the analytical techniques Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). The results indicated that tree rings formed in both species have remarkable anatomical features correlated with apparent density values, enabling the determination of tree age. The analysis of tree rings\' width time series showed that trees exhibit synchronous growth, conditioned by the specificities of the environment where they are growing. The verification of an absent common climate signal determining the tree growth among the 3 studied sites suggests the influence of other factors, including the proximity of trees in relation to stationary sources of air pollution, verified through the obtained values of radial increment, always lower for trees located in the District of Bethel. The tree rings chemical composition analysis (ICP OES) revealed differences in the absorption of chemical elements among trees species and among individuals of the same species growing in different locations. The emission lines intensities assessment (LIBS) analysis identified temporal patterns of chemical elements fixation in wood, with a common trend for those located at sites with lower anthropogenic influence. It also showed periods of increased fixation of potentially toxic elements in tree trunk (e.g Al, B, Cu, Fe, and Na), related to the early years of industrial activities in the District of Bethel. The results obtained in this study allowed us to conclude that the tree rings analysis of C. pluviosa and T. pentaphylla has great potential for environmental monitoring.

Condições atmosféricas associadas à dispersão de poluentes nas cidades de São Paulo e Santiago / Meteorological conditions associated to pollutant dispersion in São Paulo and Santiago

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as condições meteorológicas favoráveis e desfavoráveis à dispersão de poluentes, com ênfase no ozônio, nas áreas urbanas associadas à Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) e a Grande Santiago (GS). Medidas de concentração de estações localizadas em ambas as áreas de estudo foram utilizadas para determinar o comportamento médio, o número de ocorrências de ultrapassagens de padrão de qualidade do ar e o aumento noturno das concentrações de ozônio num período de dez anos. Foi encontrado que o máximo horário acontece próximo das 14 horas (horário local) nas duas regiões, e que existe uma tendência à diminuição no número de ultrapassagens do padrão de qualidade do ar associado a este poluente. Na RMSP é possível observar um máximo secundário durante a madrugada, enquanto que este fenômeno não é claramente observado nos valores médios de concentração na GS. Com dados da Reanálise do NCEP/NCAR foi visto que a ocorrência deste fenômeno está associada a configurações sinóticas específicas na GS, enquanto que na RMSP não existe padrão sinótico específico que diferencie casos com e sem aumento de ozônio noturno. Um novo módulo fotoquímico (NPM), contendo 95 reações foi inserido no modelo BRAMS na tentativa de melhorar o prognóstico das concentrações de poluentes, principalmente em relação ao ozônio. O NPM mostrou melhor desempenho que o módulo fotoquímico original do modelo (SPM; Simple Photochemical Module) para todos os poluentes considerados, salvo o ozônio, para o qual o SPM apresentou melhores índices estatísticos em 5 das 7 estações avaliadas. As características locais associadas à ocorrência simultânea ou não de aumento na concentração de ozônio foram estudadas utilizando o modelo BRAMS com o módulo SPM ativado, sendo verificado que o aumento de ozônio na RMSP está associado, principalmente, ao transporte vertical deste poluente a partir de níveis mais elevados da atmosfera, enquanto que o transporte horizontal é a maior contribuição para o aumento das concentrações de ozônio durante o período noturno na GS. / This work aimed to analyze the favorable and unfavorable meteorological conditions for pollutant dispersion, especially ozone, at the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) and the Greater Santiago (GS). Ozone concentration measurements from stations located in both urban areas were used to determinate the mean behavior, the number of standard air quality exceedances and the increase on nocturnal ozone concentration over a 10 years period. It was found that the diurnal maximum occurs around 14 local time in both urban areas, and that there is a diminishment tendency of the total cases of standard air quality exceedances during all period. A secondary maximum of ozone concentration was observed in MASP at night, which was not clearly seen on mean values over GS. By using the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data it was seen that the occurrence of this phenomenon is associated to specific synoptic patterns for GS, while there is no specific synoptic pattern for the MASP cases, with or without nocturnal increase in ozone concentrations. A New Photochemical Module (NPM), containing 95 reactions was coupled to BRAMS model in an attempt to improve the prediction of air pollutants, especially ozone. The NPM showed a better performance than the original module, the SPM (Simple Photochemical Module), for all considered pollutants but ozone. For this pollutant, the SPM presents better statistical indexes for 5 of the 7 stations analyzed. The local characteristics related to simultaneous occurrence of nocturnal ozone increase was studied using the SPM-BRAMS model, which showed that the secondary nocturnal maximum of ozone concentrations in MASP are related to vertical transport of this pollutant from higher levels of the atmosphere to the surface, while the horizontal transport is a major contributor to the increase of ozone concentrations in the GS during the night.

A composição química do material particulado fino (MP2,5) e MP10 foi determinado em três sítios representativos do estado de São Paulo: Cidade Universitária (SPA), Piracicaba (PRB) e São Luis do Paraitinga (MAT); e em duas outras cidades sul-americanas, Bogotá (BOG) e Buenos Aires (BAI). As coletas ocorreram nos anos de 2007, 2008 e 2009. Para caracterizar os sítios foram determinados íons inorgânicos, orgânicos e levoglucosano no MP coletado em filtros de fibra de quartzo. O material carbonáceo, sulfato, nitrato e amônio foram as espécies determinadas mais abundantes na massa do MP2,5 e MP10, sobretudo nas amostras dos sítios do estado de São Paulo. A contribuição destes componentes está associada à formação secundária das partículas atmosféricas nos centros urbanos. Entretanto, o cátion predominante das amostras nos sítios BOG e BAI foi o cálcio. Esta espécie no MP atmosférico, juntamente com o Mg2+, são atribuídos à ressuspensão de solo. Por meio dos estudos das trajetórias de massas de ar foi observada a influência de outras fontes sobre o material particulado local. A entrada de partículas provenientes de queima de madeira e biomassa em regiões urbanas foi associada à presença do levoglucosano, correlacionado com K+ e outros marcadores ambientais. O uso de ferramentas estatísticas, como as razões diagnósticas, as matrizes de correlações e análise de componente principal (ACP), contribuíram para a caracterização dos sítios estudados, distinguindo estatisticamente as emissões veiculares, das atividades agrícolas, industriais e queima da biomassa, entre outras. / The chemical composition of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and PM10 was determined in three sites representative of the São Paulo State: University City (SPA), Piracicaba (PRB) and São Luis of the Paraitinga (MAT); and in two other South American cities, Bogotá (BOG) and Buenos Aires (BAI). The samples were collected in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In order to characterize the chemical composition of PM collected on quartz fiber filters, water-soluble ions and levoglucosan were determined. Therefore it was possible to distinguish statistically vehicle, agricultural activities, industrial and biomass burning emissions, among others.

Investigação sobre a dispersão de poluentes na região metropolitana de São Paulo, Cubatão e Arredores / Study of air pollution dispersion at the Metropolitan Area of SãoPaulo, Cubatão City and nearby areas

O presente trabalho realizou simulações meteorológicas e de dispersão de poluentes com fontes de emissão da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) e de Cubatão, entre 23 a 26/08/2006. Neste período ocorreu um experimento de inverno realizado pelo IGC-USP, me- dindo e fazendo a análise elementar de Material Particulado Inalável (diâmetro aerodinâmico médio < 10m, M P 10 ) em Cubatão e em outros dois pontos de amostragem da RMSP (USP e Juquitiba). Empregou-se de modo articulado o modelo meteorológico de mesoescala BRAMS (Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modelling System) e o modelo lagrangeano estocástico de dispersão de partículas SPRAY. Na área da RMSP considerou-se a dispersão das emissões de Monóxido de Carbono (CO) por veículos, enquanto em Cubatão tomou-se o MP proveniente das fábricas do Polo industrial de Cubatão. Os resultados da simulação de dispersão foram comparados com os valores medidos nas estações da CETESB (Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo), na estação meteorológica do IAG-USP e no experimento de inverno. O acoplamento BRAMS/SPRAY mostrou boa habilidade para simulação da meteorologia e das concentrações de poluentes. Foi possível discutir o transporte de poluentes entre a RMSP, Cubatão e arredores, durante este período, considerando inclusive um episódio particular ocorrido nos dias 25 e 26/08/2006. / This work performed meteorological and pollutants dispersion simulations using sources of the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) and Cubatão city, between 23 and 26 August, 2006. During this period, a wintertime experiment was realized by IGC-USP (Institute of Geosciences - University of São Paulo) to measure and make the elemental analysis of the inhalable particulate matter from Cubatão, USP (In São Paulo, capital of São Paulo State, and MASPs major city) and Juquitiba (a MASPs border limits city). BRAMS/SPRAY (Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modelling System, and the lagrangean stochastic dispersion Model SPRAY) were coupled to simulate meteorological variables and pollutant concentrations. The vehicular emissions of CO was the source used as input at MASP for SPRAY, and the imput used at Cubatão was the industrial emissions of PM at Cubatão industrial city. The results of the simulations were compared with meteorological data and the concentrations of pollutants measured in the CETESBs stations (CETESB - São Paulos Environmental Agency), at IAGs meteorological station (IAG - Institute for Astronomy, Geophisics and Atmospheric Sciences of University of São Paulo), and in the wintertime experiment stations. BRAMS/SPRAY coupled model showed good skill to simulate meteorological data and the concentrations of pollutants. They enabled the discussion of the pollutants transport between MASP, Cubatão and nearby areas, during studied period, specially a particular episode that took place in August 25 and 26, 2006

INTRODUÇÃO: A exposição contínua desde o nascimento à poluição atmosférica de grandes centros urbanos de origem predominante veicular, contribui para eventos cardiopulmonares em adultos. A inflamação e remodelamento induzidos pelos poluentes podem modular a resposta vascular a mediadores e alterar a sua patência e reatividade contribuindo para eventos isquêmicos. MÉTODOS: Verificar alterações inflamatórias e estruturais nos pulmões e corações de camundongos Swiss machos cronicamente expostos, desde o nascimento até a idade adulta, às câmaras seletivas com filtros (câmara limpa) e sem filtros (câmara poluída) para particulados e gases tóxicos, situadas a 20m de um cruzamento de tráfego intenso da cidade de São Paulo, 24 h/7dias/semana/4 meses. Realizaram-se medidas internas e externas dos poluentes: PM2,5; NO2 e Black Carbon (BC) e análises morfométricas nos pulmões e corações. RESULTADOS: A filtragem da câmara limpa clareou 100% de BC, 52% de PM2,5 e 32% de NO2. Nos pulmões, as alterações predominaram na região peribronquiolar. Os animais submetidos à câmara poluída apresentaram inflamação peribronquiolar caracterizada por aumento do infiltrado perivascular (p=0,022), hiperplasia do epitélio bronquiolar (p=0,037), escore inflamatório total (p=0,015), e diminuição do infiltrado polimorfonuclear na região do septo alveolar distal (p=0.001). A parede dos vasos peribronquiolares não demonstrou alteração da razão lúmen/parede (L/P) entre os grupos (0,094), porém, os animais submetidos à câmara poluída, apresentaram remodelamento estrutural com diminuição de fibras elásticas na adventícia (p= 0,006) e na túnica média (p= 0,008) e das fibras colágenas apenas na adventícia (p= 0,016). No miocárdio, verificamos aumento do número de núcleos por área do VE, sem alteração de peso dos corações entre os grupos (p=0,005). As coronárias dos camundongos expostos à câmara poluída também não demonstraram diferenças na razão L/P, porém a poluição induziu remodelamento através de aumento de fibras colágenas e elásticas na camada adventícia e média dos vasos (p<0.001; p=0,03 respectivamente), mesmo quando categorizados os vasos por seu calibre e por ventrículo separadamente (p<0,001). CONCLUSÃO: A poluição atmosférica da cidade de São Paulo, Brasil, induziu alterações inflamatórias e estruturais nos pulmões e corações dos animais normais expostos desde o nascimento até a idade adulta. A resposta pulmonar caracterizou-se por inflamação e diminuição das fibras da matriz extracelular dos vasos, enquanto as coronárias apresentaram fibrose e elastogênese em toda parede vascular. Esses achados reforçam a hipótese de que a poluição atmosférica de grandes centros urbanos induz alterações silenciosas porém significativas, órgão-específicas, modulando a resposta vascular, podendo contribuir para alteração da patência e reatividade dos vasos e eventos isquêmicos na idade adulta / INTRODUCTION: The continuous exposition since birth to atmospheric pollution of great urban centers originated by vehicles predominantly, contributes to cardiopulmonary events in adults. The remodeling and inflammation induced by airborne pollutants may modulate the vascular response to mediators and alter the vascular patency and reactivity which may contribute to ischemic events. METHODS: To verify the inflammatory and structural alterations of the lungs and heart of Swiss male mice chronically and continuously exposed since birth to adulthood, to selective chambers with (clean) or without (polluted) filter devices for particles and toxic gases, 7days/24h/4 months, located 20m far from a cross-road with heavy traffic in Sao Paulo city downtown. Measurements of PM2,5; NO2 and Black Carbon (BC) inside the chambers and in the external environment and morphometric analyses of the lung and heart were made. RESULTS: Filters cleared 100% of BC, 47% of PM2,5 and 68% of NO2 in the clean chamber. In the lungs, pollutants affected predominantly the peribronchiolar area. Animals submitted to the polluted chamber presented peribronchiolar inflammation characterized by increased perivascular influx (p=0.022), bronchiolar epithelial hyperplasia (p=0.037), total inflammatory scores (p=0.015), and decrement of polymorphonuclear cells infiltration in the distal septa (p=0.001). There was no difference of the lumen/wall ratio (L/W) of peribronchiolar vessels (p=0.094) between groups. However, mice from polluted chamber presented structural remodeling characterized by decrement of elastic fibers in both adventitia (p=0.006) and media layers (p= 0.008) and collagen content in the adventitia (p= 0.016). In the heart, there was an increase of nucleus of myocytes/left ventricle area, but no alteration of the myocardial weight between groups (p=0.005). Although the coronary arterioles from mice exposed to polluted ambient did not show differences of L/W ratio when compared to those from clean ambient, pollutants induced increment of collagen and elastic fibers in the adventitia and media vascular layer (p<0.001; p=0.03 respectively), even when vessels were categorized by caliber and per ventricle chamber separately (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The continuous exposure to atmospheric pollution of São Paulo city, Brazil, since birth to adulthood, induced inflammatory and structural alterations in the lungs and heart. The lung response was characterized by inflammation and decrement of extracellular matrix fibers while in the heart, there was fibrosis and elastin increment in the coronary arteriolar wall. These results reinforce the hypothesis that urban airborne pollution predominantly generated by traffic, induces silent but significant organ-specific alterations, which may impair vascular patency and reactivity and may contribute to ischemic cardiac events in the adulthood

Modelització i simulació fotoquímica mesoscalar del transport del material particulat i gasos a l’atmosfera

Durant les últimes dècades la quantitat de gasos i partícules contaminants que s’han injectat a l’atmosfera ha augmentat considerablement. Evidència d’aquesta informació són les elevades concentracions de diòxid de nitrogen o partícules amb una grandària inferior a 10µm (PM10) que es mesuren habitualment en zones urbanes i industrials, o les també altes concentracions d’ozó en moltes zones rurals situades a sobrevent de zones urbanes o industrials, on les concentracions dels seus precursors, fonamentalment òxids de nitrogen, són molt baixes en condicions normals. Paral•lelament però, a l’augment de la concentració de contaminats, s’ha potenciat de forma considerable la sensibilització de la població i de l’administració a la qualitat de l’aire que respirem. D’aquesta manera és ja una necessitat en els països desenvolupats el poder disposar d’eines de control, gestió i avaluació de la contaminació atmosfèrica. Aquest fet ha impulsat que en els darrers anys s’hagin produït importants avenços en els sistemes per a la modelització de la qualitat de l’aire fins a esdevenir eines de gestió i pronòstic ambiental que ofereixen resultats força precisos. A més, la modelització de la qualitat de l’aire s’ha convertit en una eina totalment necessària per poder conèixer els nivells d’immissió a zones on no es disposa d’estacions de mesura i per poder crear plans d’actuació per tal de poder combatre nivells elevats dels diversos contaminants. És per aquest motiu que en aquesta tesi doctoral es descriu la recerca i el desenvolupament d’un sistema de modelització de la qualitat de l’aire. S’ha utilitzat com a punt de partida els treballs anteriors, i es descriu l’acoblament dels diferents models que el componen. Els models són adaptats a la zona d’estudi mitjançant l’ajust de diversos paràmetres i són utilitzats de forma depenent entre ells. L’avaluació estadística dels pronòstics del sistema s’utilitza com el camí per a la localització d’incerteses i posterior refinament del model. Aquest procés d’acoblament i execució del sistema per períodes llargs de temps, validació dels resultats, localització d’incerteses i anàlisi de sensibilitat, esdevé un procés continu i cíclic durant la tasca de recerca del doctorand, fins a obtenir resultats dels paràmetres estadístics dins de les recomanacions de la comunitat científica i acomplint els requeriments de la legislació per a la utilització operativa del sistema. Degut a la problemàtica comentada en l’apartat anterior, cada vegada són més els estudis que es realitzen per investigar iniciatives de reducció de la contaminació atmosfèrica i per implementar models de pronòstic de qualitat de l’aire. És per aquests motius que l’objectiu final i fonamental d’aquesta tesi ha estat implementar un sistema de pronòstic de la qualitat sobre l’àrea d’interès que sigui actual, àgil i efectiu. Assolir aquest ambiciós objectiu ha suposat per al doctorand anar assolint reptes i metes durant la fase de recerca. El document s’estructura en deu capítols diferents, incloent la introducció i la bibliografia. / During the last decades the amount of gaseous and particulate pollutants that have been injected into the atmosphere has increased significantly. Evidence of this information is the high concentration of NO2 and aerosols that are usually measured in urban and industrial areas, or high concentrations of ozone in many rural areas. Parallel to this increase in concentration of pollutants, has been enhanced significantly the sensibility and management to the air quality. Thus it is necessary now in developed countries have the tools to control, management and evaluation of air pollution. In this way, the modelling of air quality is absolutely necessary to know the levels of gases and aerosols in areas where there are not measurement stations, and also to combat high levels of these pollutants. The photochemical models are tools of environmental management and forecasting that in recent years have been refined to provide quite accurate results. We need to adapt the models to each area by adjusting parameters and the study of characteristics of pollution episodes. For this reason, this doctoral thesis describes research and development of a air quality modelling system. We have been used as a starting point the previous work and we describe the coupling of different models. The models are adapted to the area of interest by setting different parameters and are used in a dependent relationship between them. The statistical evaluation of the forecasting system is used as a way to locate uncertain and further refinement of the model. This process of engagement and implementing the system for long periods of time, validation of results, location of uncertainties and sensitivity analysis is an ongoing, cyclical during the doctoral research.

Προσομοίωση ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης Πατρών με μοντέλο τύπου Gauss και εκτίμηση συμβολής πηγών ρύπανσης

Η ατμοσφαιρική ρύπανση επηρεάζει την δημόσια υγεία, το φυσικό οικοσύστημα και επιφέρει μεταβολές στις κλιματικές συνθήκες. Το πρόβλημα της αέριας ρύπανσης παρουσιάζεται εντονότερο σε αστικές περιοχές, όπου η συσσώρευση ανθρωπίνων δραστηριοτήτων οδηγεί κατά κανόνα σε αυξημένες εκπομπές αερίων. Κάτω από την επήρεια δυσμενών μετεωρολογικών συνθηκών, τα επίπεδα συγκεντρώσεων των ρύπων μπορούν να ξεπεράσουν τα όρια της Παγκόσμιας Οργάνωσης Υγείας. Για την αποτελεσματική αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος είναι απαραίτητη η ανάλυση και η σωστή περιγραφή όλων των φαινομένων και παραγόντων που καθορίζουν τις σχέσεις πηγής – αποδέκτη και ατμοσφαιρικών ρύπων. Για το σκοπό αυτό ενδείκνυνται κυρίως μαθηματικά μοντέλα προσομοίωσης μετεωρολογικών φαινομένων και φαινομένων διασποράς και μετασχηματισμού ρύπων. Η έντονη ευαισθητοποίηση της κοινής γνώμης σε θέματα σχετικά με την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος αναγκάζει τις κυβερνήσεις των χωρών να επιβάλλουν την διερεύνηση των συνεπειών έργων και δραστηριοτήτων στο ατμοσφαιρικό περιβάλλον. Τα μοντέλα διασποράς ατμοσφαιρικών ρύπων είναι εύχρηστα εργαλεία που μπορούν να εκτιμήσουν συγκεντρώσεις ρύπων, έτσι ώστε αυτές να είναι αντιπροσωπευτικές στο χώρο και στον χρόνο. Οι μετρήσεις ρύπων με όργανα λαμβάνονται σε συγκεκριμένες θέσεις και ως εκ τούτου δεν είναι αντιπροσωπευτικές για μεγαλύτερες περιοχές. Μέσες τιμές ρύπων για μεγαλύτερες περιοχές υπολογίζονται εύκολα με μοντέλα ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης. Σκοπός αυτής της εργασίας, είναι η πρόβλεψη των συγκεντρώσεων των ρύπων διοξειδίου του θείου SO2, ολικών οξειδίων του αζώτου NOx και της ποσοστιαίας κατανομής της συνεισφοράς των πηγών ρύπανσης στις συγκεντρώσεις των ρύπων που καταγράφονται στις θέσεις των αποδεκτών με την χρήση του λογισμικού AERMOD της Εταιρίας Περιβαλλοντικής Προστασίας (EPA) των ΗΠΑ. Το AERMOD χρησιμοποιεί γκαουσιανά μοντέλα διασποράς. Για τον σκοπό αυτό συγκεντρώνονται και χρησιμοποιούνται πολλά και διαφορετικού τύπου δεδομένα, όπως μετεωρολογικά, γεωγραφικά, κυκλοφορίας αυτοκινήτων και πλοίων, εκπομπές ρύπων κ.α. Επίσης γίνεται η υπόθεση, ότι οι μεγαλύτερες συνεισφορές στην ατμοσφαιρική ρύπανση της Πάτρας γίνονται από την κυκλοφορία των αυτοκινήτων, από τα πλοία του λιμανιού και τις κεντρικές θερμάνσεις των κατοικιών. Η πρόβλεψη που προκύπτει μετά από την επεξεργασία των παραπάνω δεδομένων από το πρόγραμμα AERMOD συγκρίνεται με τα διαθέσιμα αποτελέσματα των μετρήσεων για ατμοσφαιρικούς ρύπους από το Εργαστήριο Τεχνολογίας του Περιβάλλοντος, που έγιναν στην Πάτρα στο διάστημα από τις 13 Νοεμβρίου του 1997 έως τις 23 Ιανουαρίου του 1998, κατά τις πρωινές (8:30 – 9:30) και βραδινές ώρες (20:30 – 21:30) στα πλαίσια διπλωματικής εργασίας υπό την επίβλεψη του κ. Π. Γιαννόπουλου. Στο Κεφάλαιο 1 αναφέρονται γενικές πληροφορίες για την ατμοσφαιρική ρύπανση, την πόλη της Πάτρας, για τους σημαντικότερους ρύπους της ατμόσφαιρας, αλλά και το πώς τα μετεωρολογικά φαινόμενα επηρεάζουν την διασπορά των ρύπων. Στο 2ο Κεφάλαιο αναφέρονται γενικές πληροφορίες για τα σημαντικότερα μαθηματικά μοντέλα ατμοσφαιρικής διασποράς, ενώ στο 3ο κεφάλαιο γίνεται μία γενική περιγραφή του θεωρητικού υπόβαθρου του προγράμματος AERMOD και του Προγράμματος AERMET. Στο Κεφάλαιο 4 παρουσιάζονται τα γεωγραφικά και μετεωρολογικά δεδομένα, τα δεδομένα για τους φόρτους κυκλοφορίας των οχημάτων στην πόλη της Πάτρας αλλά και πληροφορίες για την κίνηση των πλοίων στο παλιό λιμάνι της Πάτρας. Στο 4ο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζονται οι υπολογισμοί των εκπομπών των ρύπων από τα αυτοκίνητα, τα πλοία και τις κεντρικές θερμάνσεις των κατοικιών. Επίσης παρουσιάζεται η ποσοστιαία κατανομή των εκπομπών από τις πηγές ατμοσφαρικής ρύπανσης και η συνεισφορά της κάθε μιας στην ρύπανση της ατμόσφαιρας. Τέλος παρουσιάζονται οι προβλέψεις που προκύπτουν για τις συγκεντρώσεις των ρύπων στις θέσεις των αποδεκτών και η σύγκριση αυτών με τις μετρήσεις για ατμοσφαιρικούς ρύπους που είχαν γίνει από το Νοέμβριο του 97 έως τον Ιανουάριο του 98. Στο Κεφάλαιο 5 παρουσιάζονται τα συμπεράσματα της εργασίας. Σαν συμπέρασμα της εργασίας προκύπτει ότι τα γκαουσιανά μοντέλα ατμοσφαιρικής διασποράς είναι χρήσιμα εργαλεία για την βραχυπρόθεσμη πρόγνωση των επιπέδων ρύπανσης, την εκτίμηση της συνεισφοράς των επί μέρους πηγών στην ποιότητα του αέρα και τη βελτιστοποίηση των στρατηγικών αντιρρύπανσης. Επισημαίνεται ότι τα μοντέλα προσομοίωσης αποτελούν την μοναδική μεθοδολογία αναφορικά με την δυνατότητα εκτίμησης της συνεισφοράς των επιμέρους πηγών. Επίσης, από τα αποτελέσματα αυτής της εργασίας προκύπτουν χρήσιμα συμπεράσματα για την προέλευση της ατμοσφαιρικής ρύπανσης στην πόλη της Πάτρας, όπως το ότι το μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό της (65 – 76% για το SO2 και 85 – 92% για NOx) προέρχεται από την κυκλοφορία των οχημάτων, ενώ αξιοσημείωτα είναι και τα ποσοστά των ρύπων που προέρχονται από τις κεντρικές θερμάνσεις (17 – 29% για το SO2 και 7,5 – 14,2% για NOx). Επίσης από τα αποτελέσματα φαίνεται ότι τα ποσοστά των ΝΟx που προέρχονται από τα πλοία είναι πολύ μικρά (0,3% - 0,4%), ενώ αντίθετα τα αντίστοιχα ποσοστά του SO2 (6% – 7%) είναι αξιοσημείωτα. Τέλος, άξιο αναφοράς είναι ότι όπως προκύπτει από τις συγκεντρώσεις των ρύπων που προβλέπει το AERMOD, φαίνεται ότι σε μία ζώνη πλάτους 400 m γύρω από το λιμάνι το ποσοστό της συγκέντρωσης του SO2 είναι αυξημένο (8% – 9%). / Air pollution affects public health, natural ecosystem and bring changes in climatic conditions. The problem of air pollution are most marked in urban areas, where the accumulation of human activities should lead to increased greenhouse gases. Under the influence of adverse weather conditions, the concentration levels of pollutants can overcome the limits of the World Health Organization. For the effective address of this problem is necessary to analyze all phenomena and factors that define the relationship source - receptor and atmospheric pollutants. For this purpose are suitable mathematical models simulating weather patterns and phenomena of dispersion and transformation of pollutants. The intense public awareness on issues related to the protection of the environment forces governments to impose the investigation of the effects of projects to the atmosphere. The air pollutant dispersion models are handy tools that can estimate pollutant concentrations, so that they are representative in space and time. The measurements of pollutants with instruments done at specific locations and therefore they are not representative for larger areas. Mean values for pollutants at larger areas easily calculated with models of atmospheric pollution. The aim of this work is the prediction of pollutant concentrations of sulfur dioxide SO2, total nitrogen oxides NOx and the percentage distribution of the contribution of pollution sources in pollutant concentrations recorded at the locations of receptors with the use of the software AERMOD. AERMOD belongs to the Environmental Protection Company (EPA) in the USA. AERMOD uses Gaussian dispersion models. For this purpose collected and used many different types of data, such as meteorological, geographical, automobile traffic and ship emissions, etc. Also it is assumed that the greatest contributions to air pollution of Patras come from the circulation of cars, from the port's ships and from the heating installations. The prediction obtained after processing the above data from the AERMOD program comes in comparison with the available results of measurements of air pollutants from the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering, held in Patras in the period from 13 November 1997 until 23 January 1998 in the morning (8:30 - 9:30) and evening (20:30 - 21:30) in the thesis under the supervision of Mr. P. Giannopoulos. In Chapter 1 reported general information on air pollution, about the significant atmospheric pollutants, and how weather conditions affect the dispersion of pollutants. In the second chapter reported general information about the most important mathematical atmospheric dispersion models, while in the third chapter gives a general description for the theoretical background of the programs AERMOD and AERMET. In Chapter 4 presents the geographical and meteorological data, data on motor vehicle traffic volumes in the city of Patras and information on the movement of ships in the old harbor of Patras. In the fourth chapter presented calculations of emissions of pollutants from cars, ships and central heating of homes. Also in the fourth chapter reported the percentage distribution of emissions from sources of atmospheric pollution and contribution of each in the pollution. Finally in the fourth chapter presented the forecasts for the concentrations of pollutants in the positions of the receptors and compare them with measurements for atmospheric pollutants that were made from November 97 until January 98. In Chapter 5 presented the conclusions of the work. As a conclusion of this study shows that the Gaussian atmospheric dispersion models are useful tools for short-term forecasting of pollution levels, and for the assessment of the contribution of individual sources on air quality. Noted that the simulation models are the unique methodology regarding the possibility of assessing the contribution of individual sources. Also, from the results of this work resulting conclusions about the origin of air pollution in the city of Patras, such that the highest percentage (65 - 76% for SO2 and 85 to 92% for NOx) comes from traffic vehicles, while noteworthy are the percentages of pollutants from central heating (17 - 29% for SO2 and 7.5 to 14.2% for NOx). Also, from the results it appears that rates of NOx from ships are very small (0.3% - 0.4%), while the corresponding percentages of SO2 (6% - 7%) is remarkable. Finally, it is worth mentioning that as indicated by the concentrations of pollutants that AERMOD calculates , it seems that in a zone extending 400 m around the harbor, the percentage of the concentration of SO2 is increased (8% - 9%).

The assessment of air quality involves the measurement of its quality and identifies the main sources that cause pollution. In the present work was done the survey the main generating sources of air pollutants in the urban area of Manaus, to support actions such as the preparation of the inventory of emissions, monitoring of air quality and control of the generating activities. Currently, in the city of Manaus are found many sources of atmospheric emission. The mobile sources are probably the most significant because the progressive growthofthe vehicular fleet,makingit necessary to implement the Pollution Control Program of from Vehicles in Use - PCPV and Inspection and Maintenance Program of Vehicles in Use - I / M, for the control of vehicular emissions. In the particular industrial emissions case, the practice has been the pollution sources control in the licensing or monitoring process. However, this action is insufficient to comply with the law. In this work is recommended to carryout the emissions inventoryto establish a net work for monitoring air quality. This action would be to contribute for a more effective activities control to air pollution in thecity. / Há uma crescente necessidade de ações efetivas para obtenção de uma melhoria na qualidade do ar ambiente, principalmente nos centros urbanos, onde a poluição do ar tornou-se um dos fatores que mais afetam a qualidade de vida da população. A avaliação da qualidade do ar envolve não somente a medição de sua qualidade, como também a identificação das principais fontes que causam a poluição. No presente trabalho foi realizado o levantamento das principais fontes geradoras de poluentes atmosféricos na área urbana de Manaus, para subsidiar ações como, a elaboração do inventário das emissões atmosféricas, o monitoramento da qualidade do ar e o controle das atividades geradoras. Atualmente, existe na cidade de Manaus uma grande diversidade de fontes de emissões atmosféricas, sendo as fontes móveis, provavelmente as mais significativas, pelo crescimento progressivo da frota veicular,fazendo se necessário a implementação do Plano de Controle da Poluição por Veículos em Uso PCPV e do Programa de Inspeção e Manutenção de Veículos em Uso – I/M, para o controle das emissões veiculares. No caso particular das emissões industriais, a prática tem sido o controle por fontes poluidoras, seja na fase de licenciamento ou na fiscalização. No entanto, esta ação não tem sido suficiente para atender o que a legislação estabelece. Neste trabalho, recomenda-se que seja realizado o inventário de emissões, a fim de estabelecer uma rede de monitoramento da qualidade do ar, para que haja um controle mais efetivo das atividades que contribuem para a poluição do ar na cidade.
