CAREER CHOICE IN NURSING: FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH LONGEVITY.

PUTZIER, DONNAJO HOLMES. January 1983 (has links)
This study was designed to identify the factors that influence an individual's length of employment in the field of nursing following graduation from a baccalaureate program. Subjects were classified as drop-outs or active, and compared with reference to personal, academic, and social variables. The data used for this study were compiled by the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972. Subjects were measured at five separate intervals, beginning in 1972 and ending in 1979. Data collection instruments included the use of questionnaires and completion of a short test measuring verbal and nonverbal ability. Multiple correlation was used to identify those independent variables which were statistically linked. From this, a profile was developed and submitted to multiple regression analysis in order to define a prediction equation. A discriminant function analysis was performed to determine how well the variables were able to distinguish group membership. The results of this study indicate that academic variables are among the best predictors of length of employment in the field of nursing following graduation. Specifically, college grades are shown to be the best predictor in the early college years. As the student nears graduation, academic variables become less important and social variables become more important in the prediction of length of employment. Accurate prediction occurs in approximately 70% of the cases classified. These results would support the present practice of using grades as selection criteria in schools of nursing. While the social and personal variables did not have as much influence on length of employment as the academic variables, prediction efficiency was hindered by the number of variables under consideration and the small sample size. It is recommended that the study by replicated with a reduced number of variables and a larger sample.

The present work had as objective to check if have relation between attitudes in relation to the Mathematics presented of parents and attitudes in relation to the Mathematics, the self-efficacy beliefs toward Mathematics and mathematical achievement of students.

Karlstam, Paula January 2010 (has links)

This paper intends to examine how parents think and reflect on gender issues when they borrow books for their children at the library. The theory applied is Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of a gender system. A questionnaire was made available at the Children's department of Uppsala City Library in February, 2010. The material was compiled and analyzed with the intention to try to detect trends, patterns and themes, rather than statistics and hard data.

Parents in the study perceive themselves as gender-conscious. They are thinking about gender issues when they choose books for their children at the library. Parents’ main focus seems to be how children are portrayed in books and many are critical of what they consider to be stereotypes and simplistic interpretations. They express a need for children's books where children are depicted more nuanced, where girls can be strong and daring and the boys may be shy and crying. Pictures of parents/adults were not analyzed equally close by the parents in the study, although respondents indicated that they think it's important how adults are depicted, as they become a kind of template for how parents are expected to be and behave. In general they are experiencing today's children's books as largely stereotypical, but add that there seem to be a wide range of issues in contemporary children's book publishing, where even radical literature with clear gender problematization has its place.

Many parents choose to completely remove books that they believe has too gender-stereotyped content, others see this type of literature as a good opportunity to discuss gender issues with their children. In the case of older children's literature and fairy tales, the majority of parents in the study express the importance of mediating the cultural heritage to their children.

Parents express a need for children's literature where the act of breaking gender standards isn't too obvious or appears as the main purpose of the text, but is present as a natural background in the story. What parents want - besides great stories - are depictions of children where a wide range of emotions and personality traits are allowed regardless of the protagonist's biological gender.

The relationship between the transformational leadership style of offices and the levels of other followers' work engagement in the South African army

Dibley, James Edward 05 1900 (has links)
Dissertation / The main purpose of the study was to determine whether there is a significant relationship between the transformational leadership styles of officers and their followers’ levels of work engagement. The instruments used in the study were the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Form 5X) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). Followers (n=311) were identified in various units of the South African Army and provided with the instruments. The work engagement instrument was then completed by each follower, while the MLQ was completed by the follower for his or her specific leader, who in this instance, were all officers in the South African Army. Descriptive statistics were obtained and correlations completed for the data, which indicated a significant correlation between the transformational leadership of officers and their followers’ work engagement. / Industrail and Organisational Psychology / M. Class, race and locus of control in democratic South Africa

Stander, Genevieve Minota 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Rotter’s (1966) locus of control (LOC) is, fundamentally, a theory pertaining to individuals’ perceptions of personal control and their appraisal of the contingency of reinforcements in life. An individual may feel as though he/ she has either no control (external LOC) or ample control (internal LOC) over reinforcements. Due to its expediency, the locus of control construct has garnered much attention since it was first introduced to academia in the late 1960s. While originally positioned within Social Learning Theory, the notion of loci of control has since been appropriated into academic fields such as Medicine and Sociology. This particular study now brings the theory of LOC into the realm of Political Science. Employing World Values Survey (WVS) data collected over three time points (1995, 2001, and 2006) in South Africa; this longitudinal study establishes whether or not self-reported class and/ or race influence LOC by measuring the relationship between these three variables. The extent to which any relationships may be significant is also examined. The data analyses showed that the LOC of South Africans has steadily increased (become more internalised) from 1995 to 2006, and that a significant interaction effect occurs between race and class on LOC in South Africa. It was likewise discovered that class and LOC were highly correlated with each other – the self-reported Lower Class had a notably lower LOC compared to the relatively high LOC of the self-reported Upper Class. It is suggested that improved education levels and social security benefits may have a role in improving individuals’ LOC, especially in the South African context. The results of this study uncover future research avenues into class analyses, particularly studies that seek to understand the psychological dimensions of self-reported class or the psychological antecedents of class mobility.
