Returnable Packaging in the Automotive Supply Chain : From a supplier´s perspective

Fleckenstein, Thomas, Pihlstroem, Eirik January 2015 (has links)
Abstract Problem Little research has been conducted on how packaging and returnable packaging are managed within suppliers in the Scandinavian automotive supply chain. Sources also propose that returnable packaging is dealt with inefficiently within the automotive suppliers.    Purpose The purpose of the thesis is to explore and analyze how packaging and returnable packaging are managed within suppliers in the ASC. It also aims to identify perceived important factors for efficient returnable packaging management from the perspective of suppliers, sub-suppliers and OEMs. Method The research is based on a holistic single case study. Further, it adopts the inductive approach and exploratory purpose. Data collection is facilitated by qualitative methods, using ten semi-structured interviews and four on-site observations. Conclusion Packaging was found to be managed somewhat differently in the internal, outbound and inbound flows. Non-returnable and returnable packaging was found used in all flows at different ratios. Further, several factors were regarded important for efficient returnable packaging management. These were found specific for the internal, outbound and inbound flows and further divided into fundamental and efficiency factors.

With the continued growth of global competitiveness, the challenge is to work lean way, but without affecting the level of customer service. As a result, a quick and proper integration of the market requirements towards suppliers should be sought, in order to balance and strategically align the demand with the operational capacity along the entire supply chain. This research use the survey method and the overall objective is to find what the current situation of Demand Management and Demand Forecasting practices in the industries of Brazilian Automotive Supply Chain, identifying the main practices and the difficulties related to the implementation of the management and demand forecasting processes, as well as those caused consequences as a result of variations and demand uncertainties. Therefore, based on the literature review and popper´s hypothetico-deductive method, it has been designed a questionnaire that was answered by 37 companies in the automotive supply chain in various sectors. The results show that companies in the automotive supply chair make use predominantly of the simplest techniques as executive and sales force opinion methods and use of moving averages. The lack of availability of data, the need of professional training and deficiency of knowledge of the models and demand forecasting tools appear as major barriers to development of demand forecasts.

[pt] DESENHO DE UM SISTEMA DE MEDIÇÃO DE DESEMPENHO DE UM ELO DA CADEIA DE SUPRIMENTOS DA INDÚSTRIA AUTOMOTIVA / [en] DESIGN OF A PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR A LINK IN THE AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLY CHAIN

GABRIEL SIMOES DE OLIVEIRA 24 August 2020 (has links)
[en] Performance Measurement Systems (PMSs) have gained increasing prominence in the corporate and academic environments, becoming an essential tool for operations management. However, there is still a lack of PMSs studies contemplating the automotive industry, particularly, in specific links of its supply chain such as those associated with vehicle terminals in port areas. The academic literature also lacks more studies with empirical evidence on the applicability of PMS, which mostly focuses on case study methodologies or surveys. Within this context, the objective of this dissertation is to design a PMS, focusing on the set of performance indicators, for the operations of a vehicle s terminal located in the port of Rio de Janeiro. This dissertation uses the empirical action-research method and presents the lessons learned in the design of the PMS, which culminated in the development of an experimental Maple Panel, supplied with six months of real data. The PMS provided support to top management for decision making, in addition to corroborating key issues in the literature regarding, like highlighting the importance of support from top management, mitigating the effects of the limitations of information systems, clarity and simplicity in the design of SMD in order to avoid excessive performance indicators in the system.
