The enactment of the New Basics Project in a special school

Gray, Brian January 2008 (has links)
This study investigates the impact of the New Basics Project on teachers at a special school for students with intellectual impairments. The study is aimed at exploring the complex nature of the work of special educators as they enact the New Basics curriculum with a particular focus on the teachers’ opinions about challenges that arose for their curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices. Attention is also paid to how the principal’s leadership supported the enactment of the New Basics in respect to what he did and why he used particular strategies. The nine teachers and their principal were involved in a series of in-depth, semi-structured interviews from one of only three special schools in phase one of the New Basics trial in Queensland, Australia. These interviews produced data from the special educators as they were confronted with a new curriculum that challenged their previous teaching practices. The enactment of the New Basics curriculum occurred within the context of a state-sanctioned mandate to provide alternative programs to those offered in mainstream schools, for students with special needs. This thesis explores these teachers' experiences using critical theory as a basis for analyzing their opinions on issues such as the role of the special educator, tensions between old and new curricula, pedagogical and assessment practices, and connections between the at-school learning experiences for intellectually impaired students and the realities of post-school life. The investigation also examines the leadership conduct of the principal in changing times at the school. The findings suggest that the New Basics has played a significant role in providing structures for developing communities of practice amongst teachers; in supporting special educators to focus more on the educational needs of the students (e.g., literacy, numeracy, financial planning) and less on their medical needs (e.g., toileting, feeding, personal hygiene); and supporting school leadership that empowers and listens critically to teachers as essential components of the successful enactment of curriculum reforms like the New Basics.

Östberg, Sandra, Sundqvist, Maja January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze how GIF Sundsvallcommunicates their CSR activity, Back 2 basics. This activity strives to reduce the barriers that exist in vulnerable areas in Sundsvall among children and young people, with equal opportunities to practice sports  and activities. This study is using semi-structured interviews with two well representative people from GIF Sundsvall, Henrik Wikström who started this project 2008 and Tomas Jonsson who is working with this activity today. We have also interviewed 5 actors that have been working more or less with this project during 2019 and 2020. With these representative people for our study, we want to see how GIF Sundsvallare communicating from both their own perspective and the involved actors. The result of this study shows that GIF Sundsvall has a will to communicate their CSR activity, but that the resources and the knowledge is not enough. Further on the result shows that GIF does not have an inside-out perspective, that it seems unclear if the whole association appears to stand behind the work with the CSR activities.

Basic knowledge and Basic Ability: A Model in Mathematics Teaching in China

Cheng, Chun Chor Litwin 12 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This paper aims to present a model of teaching and learning mathematics in China. The model is “Two Basic”, basic knowledge and basic ability. Also, the paper will analyze some of the background of the model and why it is efficient in mathematics education. The model is described by a framework of “slab” and based on a model of learning cycle, allow students to work with mathematical thinking. Though the model looks of demonstration and practice looks very traditional, the explanation behind allows us to understand why Chinese students achieved well in many international studies in mathematics. The innovation of the model is the teacher intervention during the learning process. Such interventions include repeated practice, and working on group of selected related questions so that abstraction of the learning process is possible and student can link up mathematical expression and process. Examples used in class are included and the model can be applied in teaching advanced mathematics, which is usually not the case in some many other existing theories or framework.

KLUZÁKOVÁ, Lenka January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis explores the possibility to employ geocaching as a tool in teaching the basics of local history and geography at primary schools. It aims at creating own designs to implement geocaching in teaching basics of local history and geography and basics of science, using practical examples in teaching about the region of Jindřichův Hradec. The thesis includes an analysis of the state of caches in Jindřichův Hradec (as a municipality with extended competence) and their usability within the proposed framework of teaching activities. The theoretical part of the thesis concerns basic geographical characteristics of the selected region and basic principles of geocaching. The implementation part of the thesis aims at designing possible activities in teaching about the local region with the use of geocaching. The resulting designs of the teaching activities are provided in the form of worksheets which are fully capable of being put into teaching practice and have been tested by the author at the II. ZŠ in Jindřichův Hradec.
