Synthesis and selected reactions of cycloalkylidene malononitriles

Solis, Manuel A. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A new method for running the Knoevenagel condensation in high yields has been developed and tested in eleven reactions with malononitrile. The dimer from cyclopentylidenemalononitrile was characterized and its structure was deduced from spectroscopy data. Reactions of the monomers with isoprene were carried out in sealed tubes and the ratio and yields of the isomeric products were determined by gas liquid partition chromatography. A para relationship of the cyano and methyl groups is favored in the products.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Asymptotic solution of a certain ordinary differential equation in the neighborhood of an irregular singular point

Nelson, Christopher 03 June 2011 (has links)
In order to introduce the investigation contemplated in this thesis, let us consider the differential equation d4y+ 3Σ zj (aj + bjzα) djy = 0(1)z4 dz4 j = 0 dzjHere, the variable z is regarded as complex, as are the coefficients aj, bj, (j=0,1,..., n-1) and a is an arbitrary positive integer. It is also assumed that the difference of no two roots of the indicial equation about z = 0 is congruent to zero modulo α .This problem arises in some current Bio-medical problems.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

A study of the relationship between superstition and perception of the natural environment among children in Marion, Indiana

Carman, Sam F. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A questionnaire was administered to fourth grade, seventh grade, and high school students in Marion, Indiana to attempt to determine the following: 1) To what extent will grade levels that appear to be highly superstitious show favorable response to questions concerning their feelings toward the natural environment or nature-related activities? 2) To what extent will grade levels that appear to have little or no belief in superstitions show favorable response to questions concerning their feelings toward the natural environment or nature-related activities? 3) To what extent will the superstitiousness of any particular school grade level(s) differ from the superstitiousness of any other school grade levels used in this study? Results of this research indicate that the fourth grade students surveyed differed significantly from students of the seventh and tenth-twelfth grade levels in both superstitiousness and in their feelings toward the natural environment. Fourth grade students were found to be more superstitious about nature and have more negative feelings toward the natural environment than either of the other experimental groups studied. It was further found that with fourth grade students a negative correlation exists between superstitiousness and feelings toward the natural environment.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

A cross-assembler for the Motorola M6800 microcomputer

Ananias, James W. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to write a cross-assembler for the Motorola M6800 microcomputer to run on the Data General Nova minicomputer and dual disk hardware. The Nova minicomputer assembly language was selected for the cross-assembler program.Specifications for the cross-assembler were formulated as a hybrid of those of an assembler written by the microcomputer manufacturer, those of the Nova assembler, and some which were dictated by the hardware utilized. A skeletal program was written in which the processing modules were represented as subroutine calls. Subsequently, the processing modules were written and incorporated into the main program. The thesis discusses the M6800 programming language, the cross-assembler specifications, and the resulting implementation. The cross-assembler produced from this research was tested on numerous source programs and performed as specified. Samples of cross-assembler output listings are included in the thesis.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

An analysis of orthopedic training of family practice residents

Trotter, Roger C. 03 June 2011 (has links)
This study reviewed the methods of teaching orthopedics to family practice residents. It explored the areas of how, when, and to what end. Questionaires were sent to all family practice residency programs in the United States. The complied results showed that most residents are taught during a block assignment for four weeks in the second year of residency. The results showed preceptorships being utilized most frequently and for at least 50% of the teaching time. Lectures were used next most frequently and usually for 20% or less of the teaching time. Nearly all of the respondants felt their residents were qualified to initially manage athletic injuries, simple fractures, and low back pain. On the management of infant foot problems, 63% felt their residents were qualified and 36% felt they were not. This difference was felt to be due to a difference in content and not process. Suggestions for future research were put forth.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Palynology of Pennsylvanian coals of western Indiana

Oliver, William T. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Palynologic samples for this study were collected in April of 1975 at the Hawthorne and Minnehaha Mines near Linton and Dugger, Indiana, respectively. All samples were taken from the Coal No. 7 and the overlying shale.A total of eighty-three species assigned to thirty-one genera were recovered. Sixty-six species assigned to twenty-nine genera were recovered from the Hawthorne Mine and forty-seven species assigned to twenty-three genera were recovered from the Minnehaha Mine. Comparison of the palynomorph floras of the two localities reveals twenty-one genera and thirty-three species in common to both mines.Palynologic data from the sample area reveals two slightly different depositional basins. The ecology of the area was probably a coastal-swamp type of environment with an abundance of arborescent lepidodendrids.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

An investigation of the irreversible binding of penicillin to serum protein

Truex, Lewis L. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The irreversible binding of penicillin to serum protein was investigated by incubating 14C-benzyl-penicillin with reconstituted lyophilized human serum and dialyzing away the non-bound penicillin. Binding appeared in each protein fraction as was observed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and liquid scintillation counting. The nature of penicillin binding was investigated by preincubating reconstituted human serum with specicific blocking reagents.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Food habits of the trout-perch, Percopsis omiscomaycus, in southern near-shore waters of Lake Michigan near Michigan City Indiana in 1973

Woolery, Christopher Blair 03 June 2011 (has links)
Trout-perch, Percopsis omiscomaycus, were collected during the sample months June through September, 1973, in southern near-shore waters of Lake Michigan near Michigan City, Indiana. Three transects were sampled at depths of 1, 5 and 15 m using an otter trawl and a nylon bag seine. Fish were collected mainly at midnight because of diurnal migration and feeding demonstrated by trout-perch.Food habit analysis showed Chironomus spp. and Pontoporeia affinis to be the major food items of the trout-perch. Other organisms of lesser importance as food include: Eurycercus lamellatus, Eurytemora affinis, Chironomid pupae and alewife eggs, Alosa pseudoharengus.A combined monthly analysis of trout-perch food habits showed zooplankton and alewife eggs as important food items in, June decreasing.in importance throughout the remaining sample months. Amphipoda, primarily Pontoporeia affinis, was of greatest importance in June decreasing in percent volume in July and August and increasing in volume again during the September sample period. Chironomid larvae, primarily Chironomus spp., was a minor food source in June increasing to major proportions during the remaining sample months.Monthly food habits comparing size groups showed -greatest utilization of zooplankton as a food source by Group 1 (20 - 49 mm) trout-perch during the sample period June; decreasing as trout-perch size increased. There was a marked decrease in zooplankton consumption in the remaining sample months for combined size groups.Monthly food habits comparing size groups showed the greatest utilization of Amphipoda during the June sample month. Size Group III (100 - 139 mm) trout-perch consumed Amphipoda in largest quantities throughout the combined study period.Monthly food habits for Insecta consumption comparing size groups were at lowest volume in June, increasing in volume during the remaining sample months. Chironomus spp. was the major food item consumed by trout-perch.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Rubella immunization : a six year follow-up in a public school system

Hammer, Todd J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The ground work for this research thesis was completed seven years ago when the Dow Pharmaceutical Company selected Muncie, Indiana to test their new rubella vaccine. In the Fall of 1970, 311 seronegative elementary school children were innoculated with HPV-77, DK12 rubella vaccine. Of the 302 children who seroconverted, 98 were available for follow-up six years post innoculation. The participant's sera drawn six years previously was recovered in order to determine a six week and six year post innoculation titer on paired specimens. All 98 children, when retested, has measurable antibody. The geometric mean titer six years post innoculation was 55; a 14% decrease from the geometric titer of 64 six weeks after innoculation. At the six year point in time, there was at least a 9.2% incidence of subclinical reinfection, detected by a fourfold rise in the HI-titer, within the study group.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Fracture study of the Paleozoic bedrock in a portion of east-central Indiana

Pentecost, David C. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Regional fracture patterns were determined from 2,419 fracture measurements collected from 11 quarries in a portion of East-Central Indiana. When the entire study area was considered, three orthogonal fracture systems were evident. The master system appeared at every station andhad fracture sets striking from N17W to N6W and N85E to N68E. The secondary systems were more inconsistent in respect to their appearance from quarry to quarry and had fracture sets striking approximately N45W and N48E, and N75W and N20E, respectively. The fractures were vertical or nearly so and were interpreted as being extensional in nature. The regional fracture patterns became apparent after data from several quarry walls, including fractures of varying persistence and intensity, were considered in combined plots for each data collection site.Suggested major mechanisms of fracturing include: 1) warping of the Cincinnati Arch, 2) the propagation of pre-existing joints in the basement rock upward into younger material, 3) the release of older residual stresses by the production of positive structural relief with associated erosional unloading, and 4) recent compressive stresses caused by the same mechanism that drives sea-floor spreading.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306
