Computer modeling of the seismic response to various cut-and-fill geometrics

Ade, William C. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A range of seismic images likely to be encountered from stream-cut channels is examined with ray tracing computer modeling. The channel shapes, sizes, depths of burial, and associated geologies are examined to determine their effect on seismic images, waveforms, and ultimate interpretation. The study uses channel geometries taken from the Pulaski, Bush City, Moberly, and Nesvacilka channels which are assumed to he at various depths of burial. Results show that seismic sections often do not approximate geologic cross sections, that seemingly random reflections have geologic meaning, and that channels can be detected by their effects on the amplitude and shape of lower reflectors. The resolution of channels is summarized in tables of resolvability.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

A study of differences between a single discipline approach and an interdisciplinary approach in teaching environmental education at the middle school level

Page, Elizabeth J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis has studied the differences in value change of different groups of eighth grade students when exposed to different lessons on a particular aspect of the environment (forests) ranging from a single discipline approach to an interdisciplinary approach -utilizing the subjects of science and history.Three groups viewed a historical-social, biotic, and historicalsocial-biotic (combination) presentation respectively and were then administered a test (the Semantic Differential developed by Osgood, Suci, and Tannenbaum, 1957). In addition, there was a control group (administered the test only) to determine if there were any significant value changes held by the students after viewing the presentations. The results of the study were broken down into four groups. The test results of males and females were also computed because of the difference in development within this age group. The two-way analysis of variance (AMOVA) was used to analyze the findings. The study showed no significant differences between group mean scores. In this research, therefore, no value change occurred as a result of viewing the presentations nor were there differences as a result of subject matter presentation.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Changes in discharge rates and their effects on water chemistry of White River in Muncie

Wogomon, Lori L. 03 June 2011 (has links)
This study was conducted from June, 1976, to May, 1977 on the White River in Muncie. Data were collected to provide information concerning the effects that changes in discharge had on various water chemistry parameters. The following parameters were measured: alkalinity concentration, dissolved oxygen concentration, specific conductance, hydrogen ion concentration, turbidity, temperature, nitrate concentration, nitrite concentration, ortho- and meta-phosphate concentrations. At the time of each sample, discharge measurements were calculated and averaged. At the conclusion of sampling, the 34 measurements for each parameter were graphed and statistically analyzed. The parameters appeared to separate into two groups: Group A, which contained those parameters which seemed to be affected by discharge, and Group B, which contained those parameters which seemed to be unaffected by discharge. Group A parameters included nitrate concentration, nitrite concentration, turbidity, ortho- and meta-phosphate concentrations. Group B parameters included dissolved oxygen concentration, hydrogen ion concentration, specific conductance, and alkalinity concentration.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Construction and use of a mulidetector coincidence timing spectrometer system

Tingle, Donald J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A delayed-coincidence timing spectrometer system was constructed to measure nuclear lifetimes in the picosecond region. The present investigation used the self-comparison method of delayed-coincidence timing. This method used two plastic detectors to obtain the timing information. Two sodium iodine (NaI) detectors were used in conjunction with the plastic detectors to provide energy identification. Significant changes were made to the geometrical detector arrangement to optimize collection of scattered gamma rays by the NaI detectors. The mean line for the first excited states of the sources Co-60 and Cs-134 were measured using the new spectrometer system. The mean life of the 1.33 MeV excited state of Co-60 was measured to by 0.34 + 1.32 psec. The mean life of the 0.605 MeV excited state of Cs-134 was measured to be 6.31 + 2.19 psec and agrees with two previously reported values.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

The planning and development of two Indiana habitat group dioramas

Yelton, Jeffrey S. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Habitat group dioramas were developed depicting two types of Indiana habitat. A beaver-wolf habitat group diorama was constructed in a display case adjacent to C. L. 166 on the first floor, south hallway, of the Life Science wing of the Cooper Science Complex. A white-tailed deer habitat group diorama was constructed in a display case contained in the north hallway of the second floor of the Life Science wing of the Cooper Science Complex. Methods involved in the development of the aioramas included: collection of information through field studies and research, collection, identification and preservation of plant and animal specimens and development of the descriptive labels. The beaver-wolf habitat group diorama depicted a beaver habitat in early winter. The white-tailed deer habitat group illustrated a segment of white-tailed deer habitat group in Indiana in the spring.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

NASP, a computerized method of human nutritional assessment

Pandelios, George John 03 June 2011 (has links)
A computer program for the monitoring of the nutritional status of pre- and post-operative hospital and chemotherapy patients was created, based on the comprehensive assessment model developed by George L. Blackburn et al (Journal ofParenteral andEnteral Nutrition,vol1.,No.1,1977).Thedesign, implementation, and use of the Nutritional Assessment Program WASP) are described. The program is designed for process and store as many as 100 assessments for each of 100 Patients. NASP is fully shareable and resides, in an executable form, in only 280 blocks of storage.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Design of an intelligence cybernetic strategic target selection system

Rudd, Carl R. 03 June 2011 (has links)
This paper presents a hypothetical cybernetic computer system dedicated to strategic target selection. The system is one that our government is capable of developing--or may have already developed, using existing intelligence and computer technology.Included in the design are the following:The physical compostion (hardware and software components), The target selection methodology and algorithm, And, how intelligence information might be collected, coordinated and used. The hypothetical system demonstrates the importance and relevance of advanced cybernetic systems in facilitating the command decisions of military leaders.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

The construction and testing of a molecular nitrogen laser to be used to pump a dye laser for use in spectroscopic studies

Gardner, Kevin E. 03 June 2011 (has links)
A molecular nitrogen laser was constructed and preliminary tests were performed to establish the fact that lasing action was taking place. The purpose was to show that a high energy pump source of ultraviolet radiation could be constucted, given a limited budget and expertise, which would be of the quality required to perform spectrographic research.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 57406
