Relational database management system using Ada

Toure, Bakary S. 03 June 2011 (has links)
In this study, I rewrite a relational database, originally written in Pascal, using the Ada language. I tried to exploit certain features of Ada that make it a powerful language, such as packages, in an attempt to have as general a program as possible. So the purpose here was to see how, by using the Ada language, a relational database program could be inproved by eliminating certain restrictions of the Pascal language.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 57406

Political ideology and hazarodus [sic] waste disposal : a comparison of attitudes between freshman and senior Ball State University students / Political ideology and hazardous waste disposal.

Dye, Robert A. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The object of this study was to determine the current attitudes of Ball State University students toward hazardous waste disposal. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data on political affiliation and ideology, knowledge of the hazardous waste issue. and environmental attitudes. A total of 103 freshmen and 77 seniors returned usable questionnaires for an overall response rate of 49%. Computer analysis of returned questionnaires answering six research questions and forming conclusions. It was determined that there were measurable differences in attitudes between freshmen and senior students. While both groups expressed environmental concern, seniors were more knowledgable of the issues and more thoughtful in their choices. However, several indications were discovered that environmental concern in this survey group will probably not lead to political action.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Cardiac hypertrophy in female rats : effects of 8 weeks of swim training and 3 weeks of detraining

Betts, Jeffery J. 03 June 2011 (has links)
The effects of an 8-week swim training program and a 3-week detraining period on the size and protein composition of the heart of female Wistar rats were examined. The animals were separated into three groups: trained, detrained, and sedentary control. The training program, 6 hours/day, 5 days/week, resulted in a significantly larger dry heart weight, a normal collagen concentration, and a nonsignificantly greater total protein content. The greatest changes occurred between 4 and 6 weeks of training. The mild physiologic hypertrophy was assumed to be typical, and therefore simply an enlargement of a normal heart with proportional increases in myocyte size, and connective and vascular tissue hyperplasia. The detraining period produced a return of the heart mass to normal by the end of 2 weeks of detraining. The total protein content and collagen concentration remained elevated, though nonsignificant. The results indicate the detrained heart is composed of more connective, vascular, and metabolically active tissue, all of which may be important in the detrained heart’s response to increased work.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

Student nurses' choice of role models

Taylor, Gail Y. 03 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis has explored the characteristics, in terms of masculine traits on the Bem Inventory that student nurses in a diploma nursing program believed their role models in nursing possessed. In the study, student nurses nearing the end of their basic nursing education selected a greater number of masculine traits for their role models than did student nurses beginning their basic nursing education. The thesis also explored the position of the students' role model. Student nurses nearing the end of their basic nursing education more frequently identified staff nurses as their role models, followed in frequency by supervisors and nursing faculty. Student nurses beginning their basic nursing education more frequently identified nursing faculty as role models, followed in frequency by staff' nurses.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 57406

The effect of indomethacin on the macrophage tumoristatic activity of tumor-bearing mice

Estep, Clayton E. 03 June 2011 (has links)
Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an immunosuppressive factor secreted by the murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). This factor can help to insure the survival of a tumor by suppressing the functions of lymphocytes and macrophages in their defense against tumors.Four weekly assays of macrophage tumoristatic activity from tumor-bearing mice were performed during the course of tumor development. Macrophages from the peritoneal cavity were cultured with LLC cells and after 48 hours the LLC growth was measured. The results of this study showed that macrophages from tumorbearing mice were suppressed in their ability to halt LLC growth in vitro. This suppression could be prevented by the use of indomethacin, a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor. Indomethacin administration to tumor-free mice also enhanced their macrophage tumoristatic activities suggesting that the tumor was not the exclusive source of prostaglandin which suppressed anti-tumor immunity. Finally, indomethacin-fed tumor-bearing mice had smaller tumors than did mice not fed indomethacin.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306

A consolidated study of goodness-of-fit tests

Paul, Ajay Kumar 03 June 2011 (has links)
An important problem in statistical inference is to check the adequacy of models upon which inferences are based. Some valuable tools are available for examining a model's suitability of which the most widely used is the goodness-of-fit test. The pioneering work in this area is by Karl Pearson (1900). Since then, a considerable amount of work has been done so far and investigation is still going on in this field due to its importance in the hypothesis testing problem. This thesis contains an expository discussion of the goodness-of-fit tests, intended for the users of the statistical theory. An attempt is made here to give a complete coverage of the historical development, present status and other current problems related to this topic. Numerical examples are provided to best explain the test procedures. The contents, taken as a whole, constitute a unified presentation of some of the most important aspects of goodness-of-fit tests.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 57406

The effects of detraining on glucose metabolism in the adipocytes of female rats

Martin, Gary Allen 03 June 2011 (has links)
This study was done to examine the effects of detraining upon the metabolism of glucose by the rats. Thirty-nine female Wister rats were separated into three groups: trained, detrained, and sedentary. The training protocol consisted of swimming 6 hours/day for eight weeks. The detrained groups were then sacrificed at 7, 14, and 21 days after training. The parametrial fat pads were removed and digested into isolated cells. The cell volumes, cell concentrations, and glucose oxidation rates (radioactively labeled C-1 or C-6 glucose) were measured. The results showed that those adaptations in the fat cell brought about by exercise, i.e., 120% decreases adipocyte volume and increased glucose oxidation rates in both pentose phosphate (C-1) cycle and the glycolysis/citric acid cycles, return to the sedentary control levels by 14 days detraining.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306
