Literature circles : Latina/o students' daily experiences as part of the classroom curriculum

Martínez, Manuel, active 2013 22 April 2014 (has links)
After the Mexican-American war, the educational experience of Mexican and Mexican -American students was one of segregation, discrimination, and inequalities. Latina/o histories and funds of knowledge have not been historically part of the classroom curriculum. Although scholars, educators, and social movements have challenged such inequalities, they still persist. Students became objects of the educational process. New theories and educational practices, such as critical pedagogy, have helped empowered students to become aware of their situation and encouraged students to become social agents of change. Literature circles, an educational practice of critical pedagogy, enable educators to provide students with an educational experience where they become the Subjects of their own learning; thus, transforming their educational experiences. / text

Educating for the Future: A Freirean Response to Accountability in Higher Education / Freirean Response to Accountability in Higher Education

Thomson, Andrew James, 1985- 12 1900 (has links)
viii, 227 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The system of higher education in the United States suffers from deficits in several generally agreed-upon categories, including affordability, access, effectiveness of teaching and learning, and usefulness of degrees awarded. Many recommended reforms, particularly those from mainstream sources, are problematic, however. Paulo Freire's philosophy of liberatory education is a valuable source for addressing this issue. His discussion of the banking system of education provides a useful lens through which to analyze some of the problems with the current system as well as many recommended reforms, particularly calls for greater accountability for student learning. The problem-posing method of education that Freire advocates as a solution to the banking system, in turn, offers a valuable model to draw upon in the attempt to propose an effective solution to problems in higher education in the US. I apply Freire's philosophy to the 2006 report by the Commission on the Future of Higher Education. / Adviser: Scott L. Pratt

Thus, relationship of domination of I from center over the Other from periphery can be transformed through the critical attitude of dominated to not accept the system s impositions. People can only perceive themselves oppressed when learn to see themselves free. In fact, they must develop critical capability to see the world around them. There s the denouncement of oppression as Dussel as Freire and announcement of liberation. In addition, the pedagogic s principle is defended as a thinker as other one as only way that liberation can be obtained. People that seek liberation must, over all, emphasize own culture and critical capability to see the world. Work followed a demonstrative way. From Dussel s theory to practice, Pedagogic with elements of Freire s pedagogy that enrich the practice. Enrique Dussel seeks elements from Hellenic and Semite s culture to understand the latin-american s identity. Both culture base, respectively, domination and liberation. Dussel and Freire find in Semite s éthos the respect by Other, the main attitude to liberation / Este trabalho foi elaborado com o objetivo de apresentar a proposta de libertação contida na Pedagógica de Dussel e elementos comparativos de Freire.
