The Chorale Partita in the Baroque Period, A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of J. S. Bach, C. Franck, M. Duruflé, D. Buxtehude, J. Alain, J. G. Walther, Roger-Ducasse, H. Willan, J. Dandrieu, J. Langlais, J. Guillou, J. P. Sweelinck, J. Reubke, G. Bohm, and Others

Anderson, David Zane 12 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given on August 9, 1974. Chorale partitas by Sweelinck, Scheidt, B051hm, and Walther were performed following a lecture on the chorale partita in the Baroque period. The lecture included a discussion of the instruments that the partitas were written for and the functions for which they were written. The works of Sweelinck and Scheidt and their influence on later composers were discussed. A number of lesser-known composers and their works were mentioned. Also, there was a discussion of works by well-known composers such as Bohm, Pachelbel, Buxtehude, Walther, and Bach. In addition to the lecture recital, three other public recitals were performed, all of which consisted of solo compositions for the organ. The first solo recital, including works of Buxtehude, Bach, Walther, Pepping, ?ranck, Alain, and Durufle, was performed on July 18, 1971. On August 13, 1972 the second solo recital was performed. Compositions by Greene, Stanley, Searle, Willan, Dandrieu, Roger-Ducasse, and Langlais were included in the program. The third solo recital, which included works by Sweelinck, Bach, Guillou, and Reubke, was performed on June 5, 1974. The four programs were recorded on magnetic tape and are filed with the written version of the lecture material as a part of the dissertation.

Une herméneutique des textes musicaux du XVIIᶱ et de la première moitié du XVIIIᶱ siècle : approche intersémiotique / An hermeneutics of musical texts of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century : intersemiotic approach

Benhamou, Julia 24 November 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze musical texts of the 17th and the first half of the 18th century through an innovative reading hypothesis. Using an intersemiotic approach to musical text, an approach that crosses linguistics and music, we show that there is another possible reading of these texts and, consequently, that there is another way of playing them.

Barokáři - historicky poučená interpretace staré hudby v Česku očima jejích aktérů / "Barokáři" - Historically Informed Performance in the Czech Republic Through the Eyes of Its Interpreters

Vacek, Přemysl January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis I present a community of musicians dealing with a specific approach to music of older styles - historically informed performances (HIP). The aim is to answer the question as to why these promising classically educated musicians decided to leave the traditional career path in their field and chose alternative musical expression. I follow the rise and development of the professional scene of historically informed performances and its community from the turn of the 80s and 90s of the 20th century to the present day. Based on the analysis and interpretation of oral historical interviews, I describe changes in this environment and subsequent reflection on the perception of the profession and lives of the actors. I focus on their individual perceptions of authenticity and historical time, formed by their incorporation in early music.

Historical and Analytical Aspects of William Flackton's Sonatas for Viola and Keyboard (OPUS 2. Nos. 2, 4. 6. 8) with Particular Attention to the Sonata in D Maior (OPUS 2. No. 4)

Rosenbaum, George G. (George Gene) 12 1900 (has links)
These four sonatas of William Flackton (1709-1798) are probably the earliest collection of sonata literature written for the viola. They exist with a few other string sonatas from the Baroque period in England. It is essential to establish their place in English baroque music and to develop a performance milieu or stylistic preference that leads up to and lasts through the time span of Flackton's sonatas. The final tool to establish an interpretive plan will be to present a general analysis of the four sonatas with special emphasis on the D major sonata (opus 2, no. 4).

The Melodic Use of the Augmented Second in the Eighteenth Century

Shipp, Clifford M. (Clifford Marion) 01 1900 (has links)
When a particular phase of music theory is omitted from the contents of a treatise or textbook on that subject, the omission can usually be ascribed to one of two causes. Either the omitted phase is of little importance or it is not used in the music of the period on which the treatise or textbook is based. It is the purpose of this research study to discuss a particular phase of music theory that has been omitted or avoided by numerous counterpoint and theory textbook authors. The material in the contents of this work is based on a discussion of the melodic use of the augmented second in the music of the eighteenth century.

The present dissertation has, as its main subject, the theoric and pratic aspects of figured bass realization, with a view from J.S.Bach¿s documents about it. The first group of instructions, which one has received special attention in this work, dates from 1725, and belongs to the final pages of Anna Magdalena Bach¿s notebook. ¿Some Rules of Thorough-Bass¿ are fifteen rules for the beginning in the matter, with didactic intentions and destined for his students and family¿s circle. The second group, from 1738, is a bigger and including work, resulting from his years of teaching in Leipzig, entitled ¿Precepts and Principles for Playing the Thorough-Bass or Accompanying in Four Parts¿. A study about the origins of the thorough-bass and its first historical sources is presented as a general understanding about the subject. As a main objective of the research, series of musical examples were developed to reflect about the pratic process of playing thorough-bass. They include works of instrumental chamber music by Bach, besides an analysis of the Largo e Dolce, second movement of the B minor Sonata for flute and harpsichord BWV 1030, in which the harpsichord part is considered a model for figured bass realization. The end of the work comes with the interpretation of the composer¿s music under these reflections, and we believe that they are a contribution for the understanding and execution of musical pieces written under this language / Mestrado / Mestre em Música

L’expansion du tango d’Astor Piazzolla. Conjugaison du populaire et du savant à travers l’articulation avec le jazz, la musique baroque et la musique savante moderne / The expansion of Astor Piazzolla’s tango. Association of popular and art music through the blending with jazz, baroque and modern music

Fontes Saboga Cardoso, Thomas 05 July 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present thesis is to understand the musical production of Piazzolla, especially the particular dialogue between popular and art music in his work. To do so, we located four main musical streams which origins were possible to trace: the tango, structural basis of his music, the jazz, the baroque music and the modern art music. Having shown their presence in the first part, we proceed to the analysis of the particular articulation of these elements in the second one. Certain features of the tango seem favored in this junction, constituting the basic elements mainly through the presence of melodic gestures, accompaniment models and characteristic timbres very frequently used, which assure the cohesion and musical unity as well as the identity of the Argentine urban genre. On numerous occasions, his fusion employs common characteristics of the several music crossed as a strategy for reaching the musical jointure; we also noticed in certain passages a subtle and careful dosage of the musical ingredients used. The speech of the composer analyzed in the last chapter still allowed us to identify three aspects of this relationship between popular and art music: the search for an identity, by producing a music which represents the city of Buenos Aires and Argentina; a relationship with the modernist avant-gardes, in an attempt to express the present time and to symbolize the novelty through a modern music; and the quest for legitimacy, appeared notably under the expression of the "rise" of the tango.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita for Solo Flute, BWV 1013 Transcribed and Arranged for Guitar: A Musico-Rhetorical Performance Guide

Burns, Bryan Keith 08 1900 (has links)
The main purpose of this dissertation is to offer classical guitarists an additional analytical technique for interpreting and performing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. While this mode of analysis can be successfully applied to any of the instrumental works by Bach frequently transcribed and performed by guitarists, I have chosen for this study my recent transcription of the Partita in A minor for solo flute traverso, BWV 1013. With a continuo-based, harmonic realization of the Partita, I contribute to the existing guitar repertoire by offering a new transcription of this work, while demonstrating how historical concepts of rhetorical structure and aesthetics found in relevant primary source material can inspire a new approach to analysis, transcription, and performance practice. In this way, my investigations create additional perspectives for classical guitarists regarding the analysis and performance of this work, while complementing traditional harmonic analysis and subject labeling. Although it is my hope that this new transcription of the Partita will serve as an important contribution to the existing literature, the main purpose of this dissertation resides in the musico-rhetorical analytical technique and its implications on performance practice for classical guitarists.

The Trombone in German and Austrian Concerted Church Music of the Baroque Period: A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L. Basset, L. Grondahl, W. Hartley, V. Persichetti, K. Serocki, H. Tomasi, D. White and Others

Williams, Jeffrey P. 08 1900 (has links)
The dissertation consists of four recitals: three solo recitals and one lecture recital. The repertoire of all the programs was intended to demonstrate a variety of music written originally for trombone. The lecture recital, "The Trombone in German and Austrian Concerted Church Music of the Baroque Period," was presented on July 3, 1974. The lecture was an attempt to illuminate the position of the trombone, both as an ensemble instrument and as a solo obbligato instrument, in church music of the Baroque period. The program included the performance of two works by Heinrich Schutz for bass voice, four trombones, and continuo; one work by Andreas Hammerschmidt for alto, bass, trombone, and continuo; and one work by Johann Joseph Fux for soprano, trombone, two violins, and continuo. A line of influence was traced from the Venetian composers Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi, through Schiitz, Hammerschmidt, and Fux, to Mozart.
