"Dames Amazon," "Nobles Chevaliers," and Imaginary Worlds: Text-Image in King René d'Anjou's Book Production

This thesis looks at the court of Anjou-Provence’s book production, under the guidance of King René d’Anjou, during the decades of the 1440’s and ‘50s. It examines four literary works of which three were authored by the prince, namely, "Le Livre des tournois," "Le Mortifiement de vaine plaisance" and "Le Livre du Cœur d’amour épris," and an anonymous translation into French of Boccaccio’s "Teseida delle Nozze d’Emilia", entitled "Le Livre de Thezeo." In this thesis, I argue that these four works, although they emerge as separate events, connect ideologically and iconographically, highlighting a set of ideas that redefines nobility for the French Early Renaissance. Applying a complex combination of approaches, my theoretical framework combines translation, emotions and worldmaking theories. My model reveals King René’s vision of gendered roles and his refined sense of true nobility that make his court’s cultural identity stand out among that of comparable French courts of the day. It also outlines René’s close working relationship with his illustrator Barthélemy d’Eyck. The structure based on the four case studies outlines aspects of the debates on love and courtly culture that developed at René’s court. Chapter One discusses the distinctiveness of the Angevin-Provençal court’s reception of Italian and antique cultures and its importance as a continuum from the Latin translations in the Parisian humanist circles in the 1400s. Chapter Two examines "La Théséïde," the only fully illustrated manuscript of the translation into French of Boccaccio’s "Teseida delle Nozze d’Emilia," analysing the central focus on Emilia as the “Dame Amaczon.” Pursuing the work’s re-envisioning of gendered roles through emotional communities, Chapter Three explores the transformation of two warriors into “nobles chevaliers” in anticipation of René’s standardisation of noble knightly values in his "Livre des tournois." In view of the prince’s age when he started his literary career, Chapter Four questions the role that religion played in his vision of masculinity and unveils the portrait of the contemplative knight in René’s "Mortifiement de vaine plaisance." The heart-centred narrative connects with the quest of the secular heart in his "Livre du Cœur d’amour épris" in Chapter Five. It reveals the knight Cuer’s re-envisioned quest through imaginary lands and its unexpected conclusion as King René’s notion of true nobility refined by spiritual love, for men and women of the Early Renaissance. In the conclusion, the cross-study of these four books highlights their symbiotic working dynamic, and the talent of Barthélemy d’Eyck, that brought together the impressive Angevin-Provençal cultural production emerging within King René’s close circles, on the eve of the French Renaissance. / Graduate

Modélisation numérique de l'écoulement souterrain non saturé dans une croûte argileuse altérée susceptible aux glissements superficiels

Un modèle numérique a été utilisé pour simuler l'écoulement transitoire à saturation variable dans une croûte argileuse fracturée afin d'étudier les fluctuations des pressions d'eau dans une pente susceptible aux glissements superficiels. Le modèle hydrogéologique considère l'écoulement de surface et l'évapotranspiration. La caractérisation du site expérimental a servis à définir les propriétés hydrauliques d'une croûte argileuse. Les méthodes du profil instantané et de Köhne et al. (2002) ont été utilisées pour calibrer les courbes hydrauliques non saturées avec le modèle de double continuum de Gerke et van Genuchten (1993). Les résultats ont démontré que le réseau de fractures d'un sol argileux influence grandement la courbe K([psi]), mais peu [theta]([psi]). Les simulations montrent que les plus grandes variations du niveau d'eau sont généralement observées à la fin de la pluie torrentielle vis-à-vis la zone où se développent les glissements superficiels et correspondent à l'épaisseur de la frange capillaire.

A tradução dessa narrativa fabulosa inscreve-se no projeto de tradução de utopias literárias, como uma das linhas de pesquisa coordenada pelo professor Dr. Carlos Eduardo Ornelas Berriel, no Departamento de Teoria Literária do Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem da Universidade de Campinas, e foi co-orientada pela professora Dra Marie-Luce Demonet, do departamento de Letras Modernas, área Renascimento, do Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance, durante os dois anos de permanência na cidade de Tours, França (março de 2010 a março de 2012) e até o encerramento do doutorado. As evidências decorrentes de uma leitura linear dessa obra podem encobrir uma profusão de elementos que se distribuem em uma espiral de interesses de seu autor que vão do exercício da Retórica e defesa do vernáculo a um exercício da "ironia" pelo uso da palavra onde falta a liberdade para a sua expressão. Uma abordagem que desvie da linearidade parece ser uma das condições para se prosseguir nos desvendamentos de Alector. A hipótese de que personagens reais pudessem estar travestidos em personagens de ficção orientou a escolha metodológica: pesquisa bibliográfica e abordagem de diferentes centros de documentação, como os Arquivos da cidade de Bourges, Lyon, Paris, Vanves, Roma e Cidade do Vaticano. Intentou-se estabelecer vínculos entre a morte trágica de Barthélemy Aneau e as suspeitas de infiltração calvinista no Collège de la Trinité, onde Aneau foi "Principal" e justificar Alector como metáfora ou ironia de seu tempo. Essa tese organiza-se em duas partes: a Parte A cumpre oferecer um estudo crítico da cidade imaginária de Orbe. Essa parte constitui-se de três momentos: as análises de aspectos gerais da obra, principalmente o julgamento de Alector e o diálogo dos anciãos; a dimensão utópica da cidade orbitana; e, finalmente, a sua dimensão religiosa e a Parte B compreende o estudo que preparou a tradução e contém dois capítulos: o primeiro procura caracterizar a obra, discute o sentido da narrativa em seu contexto e apresenta seu autor, além de uma apresentação geral dos resultados das pesquisas realizadas nos arquivos; o segundo intenta refletir sobre o processo tradutório de Alector, visando a justificar a tradução filológica como uma das perspectivas possíveis de tratamento do corpus submetido ao trabalho de análise, a explicitar o referencial teórico, bem como as etapas de organização do trabalho de tradução. Depois da tradução oferecida pelo médico inglês John Hammond, em 1590, espera-se que "Alector, narrativa fabulosa" possa contribuir a fomentar o interesse pelas utopias literárias produzidas durante o período do Renascimento / Abstract: This thesis presents the Portuguese translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse by Barthelemy Aneau, published in Lyon in 1560 by Pierre Fradin. The translation of that fabulous story is part of the translation project of literary utopias and one of its research lines, supervised by Professor Carlos Eduardo Ornelas Berriel of the Department of Literary Theory of the Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem of the University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil); it was co-directed by Professor Marie-Luce Demonet of the Department of Modern Languages, Renaissance Studies, of the Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance during a two-year doctorate exchange program in the city of Tours, France (March 2010-March 2012). A linear reading of Alector could hide a variety of elements that are distributed in a spiral of interests by the author, ranging from the exercise of Rhetoric and the defense of the vernacular to a practice of 'irony' by the use of speech where freedom of expression lacks. Therefore, a non-linear approach seemed to be a prerequisite to progress in the research and in the interpretations of that work. The assumption that real people could hide behind the fictional characters guided our methodological choices: a survey of the literature and visits to several documentation centers, such as the archives of the city of Bourges, Lyon, Paris, Vanves, Rome, and the Vatican. We aimed to find a connection between the tragic death of Barthélemy Aneau and the suspected Calvinist infiltration at the Collège de la Trinité managed by Aneau and we wanted to demonstrate that Alector is a metaphor or irony of its time. Our thesis is made up of two parts: Part A contains a critical study of the imaginary town of Orbe and is made up of three sections: first, the analysis of the general aspects of the work, especially Alector's trial and the dialogue of the elder; second, the utopian dimension of the city of Orbe and third, its religious dimension. Part B contains the study that prepared the translation and features two sections: the first one characterizes the work, discusses the meaning of the narrative in its context, and introduces its author; it also contains the general analysis of the results of the research conducted at the archives. The second chapter reflects on the process of translating Alector and was developed to justify the philological translation as one of the possible ways of treating the analyzed corpus, to explain both the theoretical basis and the organizational stages of the translation. The conclusion briefly resumes the discussion presented in these two parts and is followed by the bilingual translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse. The appendices list the documents we looked up at the archives and libraries in France, Italy, and the Vatican. Our research at the archives did not produce any proof that would confirm our hypothesis, but revealed leads for future research, such as the gaps found in the documents of the Nunciature in France or an unpublished document found at the Municipal Library of Lyon on the death of the physician in charge of the "autopsy" of Barthelemy Aneau's body. After the translation provided by the English doctor John Hammond in 1590, we hope that 'Alector, histoire fabuleuse' may contribute to raise interest in the literary utopias of the Renaissance / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutora em Teoria e História Literária

Entre mentalités et traditions à la cour de France : le pouvoir politique de Catherine de Médicis vu par ses opposants au temps des Guerres de religion

Ce mémoire tourne autour de l’histoire de Catherine de Médicis : une femme, une reine, une épouse et une mère. Nous y analysons les perceptions du pouvoir politique féminin entre 1560 et 1589. Nous nous intéressons également à l’histoire de la monarchie française et de son organisation hiérarchique, alors que le royaume est empêtrée dans les Guerres de religion. Nous y étudions notamment l’organisation sociale et les traditions de la cour de France, ainsi que l’évolution des relations entre le pouvoir monarchique, les bourgeois et les membres de la noblesse. Plus particulièrement, on voit comment Catherine a su conserver pendant trente ans un pouvoir politique étendu et puissant, alors que les mentalités dictent plutôt son retrait des affaires du gouvernement. En effet, pour de multiples raisons, religieuses, économiques, politiques et sociales, ses opposants ne veulent pas qu’une femme ait autant d’autorité au sein du royaume. Par exemple, selon eux, les femmes ne peuvent pas être régentes parce qu’elles sont trop émotives et que leur présence, auprès du roi, est un danger pour le royaume. Catherine utilise donc l’art, sa correspondance et les fidèles de son réseau de clientèle pour prouver à ses détracteurs qu’elle est une véritable femme de pouvoir et rester au sommet de l’État. / This thesis concerns the history of Catherine de Medici : a woman, a queen, a wife and a mother. In this study, we analyze the representations of the female political power between 1560 and 1589. Hence, it’s also focuses on the history of the monarchy during the French Wars of Religion and his organization. We look into the traditions and the organization of the French court, as well as the complex relations linking the crown, the bourgeois and members of the nobility during a dark part of French history. Through those thirty years, Catherine managed to retain a wide and strong power in spite of opposing mentalities. For various reasons stemming from political, social, religious and economic matters, her political opponents disapproved of a woman holding such authority. For instance, according to them, women were unfit for the regency because of their acute emotivity and the danger that might arise from their influence on the king. Therefore, Catherine used other means such as art, correspondence and social networks to assert her role as a powerful female figure.

Les deux côtés du visage : dissymétrie et construction du portrait à la Renaissance / The two sides of the face : Asymmetry and the construction of portrait in the Renaissance

Tout visage est structuré selon un ordre symétrique. La thèse explore les conséquences de cette spécificité formelle du visage sur la construction du portrait dans le contexte spécifique de la Renaissance. Elle débute par une remise en cause de l’approche neuropsychologique qui fait de la dissymétrie et de la partition du visage dans le portrait la simple expression d’un donné physionomique. À travers une réflexion autour de la symétrie et de la dissymétrie dans l’ordre de la représentation, notre recherche rend compte de l’intérêt de ces catégories esthétiques pour la compréhension des enjeux formels et philosophiques propres à la construction du portrait. Elle révèle également la richesse et la complexité des significations allouées à la symétrie et à la dissymétrie dans le cosmos culturel de la Renaissance, celles-ci allant parfois à contre-courant de nos représentations contemporaines. Une dernière partie de cette recherche est consacrée au symbolisme théologique séculaire distinguant entre le côté droit et le côté gauche du visage, un côté tourné vers le céleste, l’autre vers le terrestre, et à son influence sur l’art du portrait. La démonstration est rythmée par diverses études de cas, parmi lesquelles des analyses approfondies de portrait peints par Jan Van Eyck, Giovanni Bellini, Raphaël et Albrecht Dürer. / Every face is structured in a symmetrical order. This research paper explores the consequences of this formal specificity on the construction of the portrait in the particular context of the European Renaissance. It starts with a critique of the neuropsychological approach that makes the asymmetry and the distinction between the two sides of the face in the portrait the mere expression of a particular physiognomy. Through a reflection on the aesthetic categories of symmetry and asymmetry in the order of representation, the research demonstrates the interest of these concepts for the understanding of the formal and philosophical issues specific to the construction of portraits. It also reveals the richness and complexity of meanings assigned to symmetry and asymmetry in the cultural cosmos of the Renaissance, these ones sometimes going against the grain of contemporary representations. The final section is devoted to the secular theological symbolism distinguishing between the right side and the left side of the face, one side turned to the heavenly, the other to the earthly, and the resulting influence on the art of portraiture. The demonstration is punctuated by various case studies, including an in-depth analysis of portraits painted by Jan Van Eyck, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael and Albrecht Dürer.
