Time-Variant Load Models of Electric Vehicle Chargers

In power distribution system planning, it is essential to understand the impacts that electric vehicles (EVs), and the non-linear, time-variant loading profiles associated with their charging units, may have on power distribution networks. This research presents a design methodology for the creation of both analytical and behavioral models for EV charging units within a VHDL-AMS simulation environment. Voltage and current data collected from Electric Avenue, located on the Portland State University campus, were used to create harmonic profiles of the EV charging units at the site. From these profiles, generalized models for both single-phase (Level 2) and three-phase (Level 3) EV chargers were created. Further, these models were validated within a larger system context utilizing the IEEE 13-bus distribution test feeder system. Results from the model's validation are presented for various charger and power system configurations. Finally, an online tool that was created for use by distribution system designers is presented. This tool can aid designers in assessing the impacts that EV chargers have on electrical assets, and assist with the appropriate selection of transformers, conductor ampacities, and protection equipment & settings.

Användandet av solceller ökar kontinuerligt i Sverige och effekten som genererasav solcellerna förvaras oftast i bly-syra batterier. Dessa batterier har en dåligpåverkan på miljön eftersom det krävs mycket energi och miljöfarliga material såsom bly och svavelsyra för att tillverka dessa batterier. Östersjökompaniet AB ochmånga av dess kunder inser vikten av ett hållbart tänkande och var intresseradeav att veta om det var möjligt att maximera livslängden av dessa batterier. Underarbetets gång analyserades olika metoder för upp- och urladdning av batterier somkan påverka ett batteris livslängd och hur man kan bära sig åt för att optimera det.En laddningskontroller användes för att optimera laddningen av batteriet. För attberäkna laddningsnivån i batteriet användes metoden ”Extended voltmeter”. Enprototyp som kunde ladda batterierna på ett optimalt sätt, varna då batterietsladdningsnivå blev för låg samt en användarvänlig applikation för övervakning avbatteriet konstruerades. Ett batteris beräknade livslängd är ingen exakt vetenskap.Enligt studier kan livslängden av ett batteri fördubblas om det laddas upp ochladdas ur på ett optimalt sätt i jämförelse med då det laddas ur helt. / The use of solar cells is continuously increasing in Sweden and the powergenerated by the solar cells is usually stored in lead acid batteries. These batterieshave a bad impact on the environment as much energy and environmentallyhazardous materials like lead and sulfuric acid are required to manufacture thesebatteries. Os materiais foram caracterizados pelas técnicas de espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX), análise de difração de raios-X (DRX) e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). A oxidação eletroquímica do etanol foi estudada por voltametria cíclica (VC) e cronoamperometria, utilizando a técnica do eletrodo de camada fina porosa e o estudo da oxidação eletroquímica de etanol \"in situ\" utilizando espectroscopia de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Posteriormente os materiais foram testados em células à combustível alcalinas alimentadas diretamente com etanol. Os resultados demonstraram que houve formação de ligas, com tamanho médio de nanopartículas entre 4,0 - 10 nm. De acordo com os experimentos eletroquímicos os eletrocatalisadores ternários apresentaram maior atividade eletrocatalítica e os estudos em FTIR indicaram que o produto principal da oxidação eletroquímica de etanol em meio alcalino para todos eletrocatalisadores sintetizados foi o acetato, sugerindo que a oxidação ocorre de forma incompleta pelo mecanismo indireto. Os testes em célula mostraram os melhores resultados para PdAuIr/C (50:40:10) com o qual obteve-se potencial de circuito aberto de aproximadamente 0,78 V e densidade de potência máxima de aproximadamente 15 mW cm-2, cerca de 333% superior a Pd/C. / Tese (Doutorado em Tecnologia Nuclear) / IPEN/T / Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares - IPEN-CNEN/SP

The main MPPT strategies in the literature are described and implemented, along with all of their auxiliary control loops. To perform the comparison, a simulation platform is developed. Mathematical modeling of all components in the platform is described, as well as how they relate with each other. This platform allows keeping the system parameters the same for all methods, and modifying only the necessary to implement each of them. The control method for battery charging is presented and analyzed. One of the MPPT strategies described is applied together with this methodology. The methodology of the simulations are performed with switched models to validate the project realized with the developed average models. / Este trabalho consiste na análise comparativa entre métodos MPPT para turbinas eólicas de pequeno porte e desenvolvimento de uma metodologia de controle para um sistema de carregamento de baterias. Os principais métodos de MPPT presentes na literatura são descritos e implementados, juntamente com suas malhas de controle auxiliares. Para realizar a comparação, uma plataforma de simulação é desenvolvida. O modelamento matemático de todos os componentes presentes na plataforma é descrito, bem como a forma como eles se relacionam. Essa plataforma permite manter os parâmetros do sistema iguais para todos os métodos, somente modificando o necessário para implementar cada um deles. A metodologia de controle para carregamento de baterias é apresentada e analisada. Um dos métodos de MPPT descritos é aplicado juntamente à essa metodologia. As simulações da metodologia são realizadas com modelos chaveados, para validar o projeto realizado com os modelos médios levantados.

Capacity and Life Estimation of Flooded Lead Acid Batteries using Eddy Current Sensors

Lead acid batteries are widely used in domestic, industrial and automotive applications. Even after lot of advancements in battery technologies, lead acid cells are still in use because of their high capacity and low cost. To use any battery effectively, first we should be able to identify the available capacity or State of Charge (SoC). There are many techniques available to measure SoC of a lead acid battery. One such unique method is to measure the capacity using eddy current sensors. This method is unique because it is non-obtrusive and online. Eddy current sensors (ECS) are wire wound inductors which work on the principle of electromagnetic induction. Eddy currents are the currents generated on a conductive material when it is kept in a varying magnetic. Eddy current sensors generate varying magnetic eldest and will be able to identify the properties of conductive materials like thickness, conductivity, material composition etc. Also they can be used as proximity sensors. Lead acid batteries use lead metal as cathode. Upon usage(discharge) the lead metal converts to lead sulfate and revert back to lead after charging. These changes in lead electrode can be monitored using eddy current sensors. The impedance of an eddy current sensor will change when it is kept close to the lead electrode when the battery is charging or discharging. These impedance parameters can be monitored to determine the battery SoC. When lead is deposited on cathode, there will be more eddy current loss in the target and the total resistance of coil increases. On the other hand, when lead is deposited on the electrode because of increase in the magnitude of eddy currents which oppose the source magnetic, the total inductance of coil decreases. We can observe exactly opposite behaviour of coil resistance and inductance when the lead electrode is converted to less conductive lead sulfate. There is a lot of research on using ECS to measure SoC of lead acid batteries and there are still many challenges to be addressed. First we have explained about different circuit designs we have used to monitor the battery capacity using eddy current sensors. After that, we have explained about our complete experimental setup and the procedure to measure the sensor parameters using the setup. Then, we have discussed about different issues involved in the eddy current sensing based state of charge measurement. Eddy current sensors are affected by temperature variations. We have studied the coil resistance behaviour with temperature at different frequencies using simulations and experiments. We have obtained the conditions for linear variation of coil resistance with temperature. The measured temperature compensation scheme is applied and the results are discussed. We have also modified the measurement system design in order to minimize the lift o errors. We have used a metallic clamp structure to minimize the lift o errors. We have used finite element analysis based simulations to study different design parameters and their effect on the sensitivity of eddy current sensor. We have created 2D eddy current models and the sensitivity of coil resistance is computed by changing the coil dimensions and the core permeability. We have also performed error analysis and computed the error due to the tilt angle shift between coil and electrode. We have also computed the error due to the internal heating of battery. We have also studied the effect of acid strati cation on state of charge for both sealed and hooded batteries. We have proposed a multi coil method to minimize the errors in SoC measurement due to acid strati cation for Flooded type batteries. We have used finite element analysis based simulations to compute the error due to acid strati cation by increasing the number of coils. Finally we have derived the equation for electrode Q factor using the transformer model of eddy current sensor. The derived Q factor equation is then used to study the aging of lead acid batteries both by using experiments and simulations. Finally we have explained a detail procedure to measure the state of charge(SoC) and state of health(SoH) of a hooded lead acid battery using eddy current sensing method.

Lithium-ion Battery Modeling and Simulation for Aging Analysis using PyBaMM / Modellering och Simulering av Litiumjonbatterier för Åldringsanalys med hjälp av PyBaMM

The rate of degradation of a lithium-ion battery depends on its use i.e. how it is charged and discharged. Physics-based models are used to represent the processes inside a cell as well as the degradation mechanisms. This thesis aimed to compare how the battery lifetime is affected when charging with different charging protocols using different battery models and degradation mechanisms. The investigated models are the Single Particle Model (SPM), the Single Particle Model with electrolyte (SPMe), and the Doyle-Fuller Newman model (DFN). The degradation mechanisms are solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and lithium plating (LP). The used charging protocols are constant-current constant voltage(CCCV), positive pulsed current (PPC), and constant current (CC). Pulsed charging was included to investigate if the battery lifetime can be improved as in an experiment by Huang where pulsed charging increased the battery lifetime by 60%. To perform the simulations using the physics-based models, PyBaMM (PythonBattery Mathematical Modeling) was used. The simulations were performed for a lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cell. Two types of SEI were implemented, solvent-diffusion limited and reaction limited. For the LP only irreversible LP was used.1200 cycles were simulated. Comparing the PPC and CC protocols, there were no significant changes between the degradation mechanisms for the different protocols. The results were the same for all the models, except for the results of the internal resistance. The conclusion is that for the PPC and CC protocols, the cell degrades the same although the PPC protocol used twice the C-rate. The PPC charging did not increase the battery lifetime. For the CCCV and CC protocols, there were some bigger differences between the protocols, but between the different models, there weren’t any significant differences. The CCCV degrades the cell faster for all degradation mechanisms and all models. Simulating one degradation submodel at a time resulted in a very small capacity fade for some submodels. Therefore, for future work, it is suggested to use several degradation submodels at the same time but also to try other degradation mechanisms or try PPC protocols with different frequencies and duty cycles. / Hur snabbt litiumjonbatterier degraderas beror på hur de används, laddas och laddas ur. Laddningsprotokollen som användes är konstant ström konstant spänning (CCCV), positiv pulserande ström (PPC) och konstant ström konstant (CC). Protokollet för pulsad laddning inkluderades för att undersöka om batteriets livslängd kan förbättras som i ett experiment av Huang, där pulsad laddning ökade batteriets livslängdmed 60%. För att utföra simuleringar med fysikbaserade modeller användes PyBaMM(Pyhton Battery Mathematical Modeling). Simuleringarna utfördes för en lithiumkobaltoxid-cell (LCO). Två typer av SEI implementerades, lösningsmedelsdiffusion-begränsad och reaktions-begränsad SEI. För LP användes endast irreversibel LP.1200 cykler simulerades. Jämförande PPC- och CC-protokollen fanns det inga signifikanta förändringar mellan degraderingsmekanismerna för de olika protokollen. Resultaten vardesamma för alla modellerna, förutom resultaten av den interna resistansen. Slutsatsen är att för både PPC- och CC-protokollen så degraderades cellen på samma sätt, trots att PPC-protokollet använde dubbelt så hög C-faktor. PPC-protokollet ökade inte batteriets livslängd. För CCCV- och CC-protokollen fanns det några större skillnader mellan protokollen, men mellan de olika modellerna fanns det inga signifikanta skillnader. CCCV-protokollet försämrade cellen snabbare för alla degraderingsmekanismer och alla modeller. Att simulera en degraderingsmodell i taget resulterade i mycket små kapacitetsförluster. Därmed föreslås det att i framtida arbete använda flera degraderingsmodeller samtidigt men även testa andra degraderingsmekanismer eller PPC-protokoll med olika frekvenser och arbetscykler

This master’s thesis describes various principles of measurement of electromagnetic waves in a free space and on a line. Used sensors and their real parameters are given for every method. The analysis of protections of high-frequency inputs of measuring instruments is done here and the most suitable method and protections of input for realization are chosen. The analysis of design of secondary protection of high-frequency input is done in this project. The protection of input is realized and measured. The suitable method of measurement is chosen as well as the sensor for measurement of power. The block diagram and circuit diagram of the meter of power are designed. According to designed conception the measuring instrument for measurement of power is realized and its single qualities are measured during the realization. In the final part its precision is measured and the evaluation of results is done.
