Distributional economic impacts of Civil War battlefield preservation alternatives in the Shenandoah Valley of VirginiaJohnson, Daniel G. 09 February 2007 (has links)
The recent disappearance of unpreserved Civil War battlefield sites under the press of private development has initiated new nation-wide preservation efforts of remaining unpreserved battlefield sites by both the public and private sectors. However, preservation efforts of Civil War sites are encumbered when little or no market incentive exists for private landowners to resist the more remunerative rewards of commercial development.
This study quantifies the direct, indirect, and induced distributional economic impacts of battlefield preservation on local economies surrounding selected Civil War battlefield sites located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Distributional analyses examine the changes in economic activity (e.g., employment and personal income) within a region, and help to document the economic feasibility of battlefield preservation. Both private and government ownership and development of battlefield sites are considered.
The study results indicate that preserving Civil War battlefields can have positive distributional economic impacts on the local economy, but whether or not these impacts justify battlefield preservation by the public or private sector is not established in this study. Distributional impacts are only one type of economic benefit that a battlefield park may contribute to the local economy. The nonmarket value of battlefield parks may provide more benefits to society than the market value of parks, and should be considered in the decision to preserve Civil War battlefields. / Master of Science

Prototype system for detecting and processing of IEEE 802.11a signalsGoh, Che Seng 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / As the need to send larger amounts of information increases, the military is looking into viable solutions to push this information throughout the battle space. IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN network presents an attractive high-speed solution by providing data rates up to 54 Mbps. At the same time, wireless LAN introduces increased security risk due to its vulnerability to exploitation of the wireless LAN physical layer. This research will develop a prototype system using low cost hardware and software solution to detect and process wireless IEEE 802.11a signals. Using the prototype, performance data will be collected to determine whether IEEE 802.11a is a feasible option as a high-speed information network for military use. Additionally, the performance data collected will provide a good basis for predicting the expected performance in an operational scenario and provide valuable information for proper deployment planning. / Major, Republic of Singapore Air Force

The overburdened Earth : landscape and geography in Homeric epicLovell, Christopher 26 October 2011 (has links)
This dissertation argues that Homer's Iliad depicts the Trojan landscape as participant in or even victim of the Trojan War. This representation alludes to extra-Homeric accounts of the origins of the Trojan War in which Zeus plans the war to relieve the earth of the burden of human overpopulation. In these myths, overpopulation is the result of struggle among the gods for divine kingship. Through this allusion, the Iliad places itself within a framework of theogonic myth, depicting the Trojan War as an essential step in separating the world of gods and the world of men, and making Zeus’ position as the father of gods and men stable and secure.
The Introduction covers the mythological background to which the Iliad alludes through an examination of extra-Homeric accounts of the Trojan War’s origins. Chapter One analyzes a pair of similes at Iliad 2.780-85 that compare the Akhaian army to Typhoeus, suggesting that the Trojan War is a conflict similar to Typhoeus’ attempt to usurp Zeus’ position as king of gods and men. Chapter Two demonstrates how Trojan characters are closely linked with the landscape in the poem’s first extended battle scene (4.422-6.35); the deaths of these men are a symbolic killing of the land they defend. Chapter Three discusses the aristeia of Diomedes in Book 5, where his confrontations with Aphrodite, Ares, and Apollo illustrate the heroic tendency to disrespect the status difference between gods and men. Athena’s authorization of Diomedes’ actions reveals the existence of strife among the Olympian gods, which threatens to destabilize the divine hierarchy. Chapter Four examines the Akhaian wall whose eventual destruction is recounted at the beginning of Book 12. The wall symbolizes human impiety and its destruction is a figurative fulfillment of Zeus’ plan to relieve the earth of the burden of unruly humanity. Finally, Chapter Five treats the flußkampf and Theomachy of Books 20 and 21, episodes adapting scenes of divine combat typically associated with the struggle for divine kingship. In the Iliad, these scenes show that Zeus’ power is unassailable. / text

Adaptive management of emerging battlefield networkFountoukidis, Dimitrios P. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / The management of the battlefield network takes place in a Network Operations Center (NOC). The manager, based on the importance of the managed network, is sometimes required to be present all the time within the physical installations of the NOC. The decisions regard a wide spectrum of network configurations, fault detection and repair, and network performance improvement. Especially in the case of the battlefield network operations these decisions are sometimes so important that can be characterized as critical to the success of the whole military operation. Most of the times, the response time is so restricted that exceeds the mean physical human response limits. An automated response that also carries the characteristics of human intelligence is needed to overcome the restrictions the human nature of an administrator imposes. The research will establish the proper computer network management architecture for an adaptive network. This architecture will enhance the capabilities of network management and in terms of cost and efficiency. / Lieutenant Commander, Hellenic Navy

Confederate Cities: The Urban South during the Civil War EraSlap, Andrew L., Towers, Frank 01 January 2015 (has links)
When we talk about the Civil War, we often describe it in terms of battles that took place in small towns or in the countryside: Antietam, Gettysburg, Bull Run, and, most tellingly, the Battle of the Wilderness. One reason this picture has persisted is that few urban historians have studied the war, even though cities hosted, enabled, and shaped Southern society as much as they did in the North. Confederate Cities, edited by Andrew L. Slap and Frank Towers, shifts the focus from the agrarian economy that undergirded the South to the cities that served as its political and administrative hubs. The contributors use the lens of the city to examine now-familiar Civil War–era themes, including the scope of the war, secession, gender, emancipation, and war’s destruction. This more integrative approach dramatically revises our understanding of slavery’s relationship to capitalist economics and cultural modernity. By enabling a more holistic reading of the South, the book speaks to contemporary Civil War scholars and students alike—not least in providing fresh perspectives on a well-studied war. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1011/thumbnail.jpg

Anzac Day meanings and memories : New Zealand, Australian and Turkish perspectives on a day of commemoration in the twentieth centuryDavis, George Frederick, n/a January 2009 (has links)
This study examines the changing perceptions of Anzac Day in New Zealand, Australia and Turkey in the twentieth century. Changing interpretations of Anzac Day reflect social and political changes in the nations over that time.
Anzac Day is an annual commemoration which has profound significance in the Australian and New Zealand social landscape. It has undergone significant changes of meaning since it began, and may be regarded as being an example of the changeable script of memory. The thesis argues that memory and landscape intersect to influence the way commemorative gestures are interpreted. Personal and community memories are fluid, influenced by the current historical landscape. This means that each successive Anzac Day can have different connotations. The public perception of these connotations is traced for each of New Zealand, Australia and Turkey.
Anzac Day reflects the forces at work in the current historical landscape. Within that landscape it has different meanings and also functions as an arena for individual and community agency. On Anzac Day there are parades and services which constitute a public theatre where communities validate military service. Individual and communal feats are held high and an ethic or myth is placed as a model within the social fabric. Anzac Day is contested and reflects tides of opinion about war and society and the role of women. It is also the locale of quiet, personal contemplation, where central family attachments to the loved and lost and the debt owed by civilian communities to the military are expressed. Generational change has redefined its meanings and functions.
Anzac Day was shaped in a contemporary historical landscape. It reflected multi-national perspectives within British Empire and Commonwealth countries and Turkey. For Turkey the day represented a developing friendship with former foes and was couched within Onsekiz Mart Zaferi, a celebration of the Çanakkale Savaşlari 1915 victory in the Dardanelles campaign. As Anzac Day evolved, Turkey, the host country for New Zealand and Australian pilgrims, became the focus of world attention on the day. Gallipoli is now universally recognised as the international shrine for Anzac Day.

Usability within the digital battlefield : usability issues as applied to the digitised battlefield within a Southern African military contextDe Jager, Madia (Madia Martie) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Defence forces around the world are experiencing a period of dynamic change with new force
structures being combined with new technologies in an effort to enhance effectiveness. Present
day resources and technology available to the modern society, have facilitated the evolution of
warfare as a technologically advanced enterprise, with the decided emphasis on the digitisation
of the battlefield. With rapid development in the field of battlefield digitisation there is an
increasing need to address the important issues and challenges facing the military. In order to
meet strategic defence guidelines, it is necessary to integrate the capabilities of defence forces
with modern technology. In this regard the South African Defence Force is striving towards the
digitisation of the battlefield. This digitisation can potentially satisfy the many requirements set
for the Defence Force, in a more timely and cost-effective manner than traditional methods of
functioning and training would be able to achieve.
Effective situational awareness and command and control structures are essential for any military
operation, especially with increasingly complex military demands. Key areas of importance are
the collection, dissemination and management of information, which if executed skilfully, will
result in forces capable of operating more effectively and with greater flexibility. Decision
makers on the battlefield continually suffer from information overload due to the extremely rapid
inflow of information. This is likely to worsen with the continued introduction of new
information technologies. The technology level of any defence force should therefore be
appropriate, driven by usefulness and cost-effectiveness.
The digitised battlefield allows for the execution of near realistic military exercises, while
conserving material and reducing the detrimental impact on environment and personnel, as is the
case with traditional exercises. A key issue of focus is the usability and integration of related
technologies within the digital battlefield. Promoting optimal usability through continuous and
comprehensive user-based evaluation is crucial and will result in increased human performance
through interaction with technology. Optimal usability must be engineered into any product
(defined as something produced by means of either human or mechanical work) from the
inception of the product's life cycle.
Within today's technology orientated society, the digitisation of the battlefield and the usability
thereof have become increasingly important issues. Most research has investigated the concepts of battlefield digitisation and usability in isolation, and little co-ordinated effort has been made to
integrate digitisation and usability, even though the relation is important and necessary. A study
of this nature has not hitherto been conducted within the South African military context. The
purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical background of the issues of military digitisation
and usability, in order to determine the significance of this relation. This research aims
specifically to promote the viewpoint that usability is central to military digitisation, as well as to
emphasise the importance of user-centred approaches to system development and utilization. The
result will be enhanced human performance and satisfaction when interacting with digital
battlefield applications.
The theoretical perspective is provided by way of a literature review of the relevant military and
usability concepts. Military functioning is discussed, highlighting the importance of situational
awareness and effective command and control capabilities. The digitisation in the military is
examined with specific reference to Virtual Reality and simulation. An overview of usability
(within a human-computer interaction and user-centred design context) and usability evaluation
methods are provided.
This research was conducted during a military exercise conducted by the South African National
Defence Force. A usability inquiry approach was followed with questionnaires distributed to
participants involved with the Command and Control Digital Battlefield System. Information
was obtained concerning participants' characteristics, likes, dislikes, needs, and understanding of
the digital battlefield system. The analyses of the information consisted of descriptive statistics
as the research aimed to illustrate the attitudes concerning usability and the digital battlefield.
The results provide an understanding of the perceptions of the users regarding the digital
battlefield system and its usability. Conclusions are drawn from results obtained and
recommendations are made for future research.
tradisionele oefeninge.
tegnologiee in 'n gedigitaliseerde gevegsterrein.
gedigitaliseerde gevegsterrein toepassings plaasvind.
Informasie is
