Exploring the support needs of parents of infants with complex health needs in the community / Johester Emmarentia Stronkhorst.

Stronkhorst, Johester Emmarentia January 2012 (has links)
The survival rate and life expectancy of infants with complex health needs have increased overthe last decades, and this increases the number of families who have to care for such infants at home. These families seek support in the community setting, and supporting them has a positive impact on the well-being of both the parents and the infant. In South Africa the needs of these parents are not known, and this fact makes it difficult to adequately support them in the community. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the needs of parents of infants with complex health needs in the community setting. Two objectives were set to reach the aim mentioned above: 1) to critically appraise and synthesise the best available evidence on the support needs of parents of infants with complex health needs and 2) to explore and describe parents’ emic perspective on their support needs as parents of infants with complex health needs in a South African context. A sequential mixed method approach was utilised in two phases, here discussed in five chapters. In an attempt to meet objective one, the support needs of parents of infants with complex health needs were determined by means of an integrative literature review from studies obtained through computerised searches of several electronic databases, supplemented by checking reference lists and consultation with experts. This was followed by individual face-to-face interviews with the stated parents in three different settings. The latter addressed the second objective of the study, namely to provide an emic perspective on the support needs of parents of infants with complex health needs in a South African context. The integrative literature review described five main themes on the support needs of parents of infants with complex health needs: need for information, need for parent-to-parent support, need for professional support, need for self-confidence in the care of the infant and need for social support. All of these themes were confirmed in the South African context through the interviews with parents. However, South African parents added an additional theme: the need for normality. The final chapter offers an evaluation of the study and discusses study limitations and recommendations for nursing practice, education and research. / Thesis (MCur)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

The psycho-educational needs of children orphaned by AIDS as perceived by their caregivers / Marieke Cornelia van Rooyen

Van Rooyen, Marieke Cornelia January 2011 (has links)
During the past decade, South Africa has become the country with the highest number of HIV/AIDS infections in the world. In the wake of the widely spread HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa, hundreds of thousands of children are left parentless. Since limited research exists on the psycho-educational needs of children orphaned by AIDS in South Africa, the focus of this study was on their psycho-educational development. A literature study was conducted to investigate the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa and its consequences for the psycho-educational development of AIDS orphans. A qualitative investigation was undertaken and interviews were conducted with caregivers of AIDS orphans at two care centres in rural KwaZulu-Natal. The aim of the investigation was to identify the psycho-educational needs of AIDS orphans as perceived by their caregivers. Moreover, the investigation also aimed at identifying factors that impede the psycho-educational development of AIDS orphans, and to determine the extent to which these day care centres meet the psycho-educational needs of these orphans. The following psycho-educational needs of AIDS orphans emerged from the investigation: - the need to socialise and communicate - the need to cope with parental death - the need for acceptance - the need for security and care - the need for love and belonging - the need to deal with negative emotions Physical and material needs were added to the above needs, since these were frequently mentioned during the course of the interviews. Factors that seriously impeded the psycho-educational development of AIDS orphans were abuse and neglect. The investigation also revealed that the care centres were to a large extent able to meet a broad spectrum of these orphans’ psycho-educational needs, especially at the care centre where the AIDS orphans were able to sleep over and received the full-time attention caregivers. Since the extended family system can no longer fully carry the burden of hundreds of thousands of AIDS orphans in South Africa, care centres situated in the affected communities can offer a viable alternative to traditional models of care. The study emphasised the need for further research on the needs of AIDS orphans as well as increased support of AIDS orphans on local, provincial and national levels. / MEd (Learner support), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

'n Model vir die gebruik van Bybelse narratiewe in die pastoraat aan kinders tussen die ouderdom van 6 en 13 jaar / Schalk W. Basson

Basson, Schalk Willem January 2010 (has links)
Can Biblical narratives be applied to the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13? If so, how are Biblical narratives effectively applied in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13? With these questions in mind, this research was undertaken with the goal in mind to eventually put forward a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The research was done by making use of the research method of Zerfass (1974: 166). * The basic-theoretical phase of this study was done by means of a study of available literature. It began by an enquiry into the relevant Biblical perspectives on pastoral care and was followed by a further inquiry into the relevant Biblical perspectives on narrative pastoral care. This phase of the study was completed by an inquiry on the basic principles of pastoral care of children, with specific reference to children between the ages of 6 and 13. * The meta-theoretical phase of this study was done by an overview of the handling of children between the ages of 6 and 13 through the course of history in Western society. This was followed by a study of adjacent disciplines concerning the value of a narrative approach to the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The next part of this phase was done by identifying the most common pastoral needs of children between the ages of 6 and 13, by means of an empirical enquiry. * The practice-theoretical phase was done by providing guidelines for the application of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of children between the ages of 6 and 13. This was followed by an illustration of the application of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of children between the ages of 6 and 13, by means of case studies. This phase of the study was completed by providing a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. This study has achieved success by providing a model for the use of Biblical narratives in the pastoral care of primary school children between the ages of 6 and 13. The model was provided within the epistemological framework of a post-postmodern epistemology. This model shows that Biblical narratives can be successfully applied in the pastoral care of primary school children and it also provides practical guidelines in the practical application of it. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Chronosisteemverwante faktore wat gelei het tot bende–betrokkenheid in 'n landelike gebied in die Wes–Kaap / Swanepoel L.

Swanepoel, Lizanne January 2011 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.
