Binge drinking behaviour, attitudes and beliefs in a UK community sample: An analysis by age, gender and deprivation.

McMahon, J., McAlaney, John, Edgar, F. January 2007 (has links)
Yes / Binge drinking has sparked considerable interest and concern. However despite this interest little is known about the lay understanding of binge drinking and whether there are differences in understanding by gender, age and level of deprivation. Aims: This study investigated the beliefs and attitudes of a sample in the Inverclyde area to binge drinking. Methods: Using both cluster and quota sampling, 586 subjects completed a structured interview, using open questions about their beliefs on binge drinking and was it a problem generally and locally. Findings: Definitions of binge drinking tended to concentrate on intoxication and some described a dependent drinking pattern. Causes and solutions offered were varied but pointed up levels of deprivation in respect of jobs and entertainment. More subjects regarded binge drinking as a problem in society than locally, which is consistent with research suggesting that misperceptions of others¿ drinking increases with social distance. Differences in beliefs were found by age and level of deprivation but not gender. It was marked that no subject offered the `official¿ definition of bingeing or even an approximation of it. Conclusions: Further research is required if future mass media campaigns and interventions are to be relevant to the population.

Health care delivery in an Inuit settlement : a study of conflict and congruence in Inuit adaptation to the cosmopolitan medical system

O'Neil, John D. 13 March 2007
This thesis is a descriptive study of health care in the Inuit settlement of Gjoa Haven, N.W.T. The purpose of the research was primarily to describe and analyse the interactional networks of health and illness related behaviour that are associated with the Nursing Station. The cultural and organizational background of the administrators and nurses who provide medical services to Inuit are described, as are the attitudes and beliefs held by Inuit about illness and about the health care delivery system.
The thesis examines the acculturation of Inuit beliefs and practices related to illness throughout the contact period and focuses particularly on the changing role of the Inuit healer, the anqatquq or shaman. Various influences such as epidemic diseases, missionary activity, and changing economic orientations that have contributed to Inuit dependency patterns and changed beliefs about illness, its causes and cures, are detailed.
Theoretically, the thesis is partly a study of the replacement of a traditional medical system by the cosmopolitan medical system and the gradual attenuation of the traditional curer's role. It is also an examination of the manner in which the conflict resulting from differences in attitudes between administrators, nurses and Inuit, affects the delivery and utilization of health services in Gjoa Haven. It demonstrates that where problems occur they are as much a result of conflict between administrators and nurses, as they are due to conflict between nurses and Inuit.
The substantive portion of the thesis examines specific domains of interaction such. as health education, agency coordination and native participation and points out areas where failure occurs in each of these arenas. Recommendations are included that suggest strategies for improving the effectiveness of health care delivery and ultimately the health levels of the Inuit population.

Influência de um programa de formação continuada sobre crenças e atitudes dos professores em relação a Educação Inclusiva /

Menino-Mencia, Gislaine Ferreira. January 2020 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The construction of an inclusive Brazilian education requires taking into account not only the initial training, but also the continuing education of teachers, aiming at a process of reflection and expansion of theoretical and technical knowledge, thus promoting changes in beliefs and attitudes towards Inclusive Education. Investigations in this context are still scarce in the literature. Thus, this thesis was organized in three studies, the first of which aimed to develop a continuing education program for teachers, describing and analyzing the activities developed during the course. Data collection was performed with 110 elementary school teachers and school managers, using a registration form and a final course evaluation form, available on the Google Forms platform, in addition to activities requested in the Moodle-AVA environment. The treatment and analysis of the data were performed using the Software Analyze Lexicale par Contexte d'un Ensemble de Segments de Texte (ALCESTE), as well as, from descriptive statistics to quantitative data. The results of Study 1 demonstrated a high percentage of knowledge regarding school inclusion during the course, and it can be considered that the continuing education program enabled reflections on Inclusive Education, which can help and support the pedagogical practice of teachers, especially, with students Target Public of Special Education (PAEE). Study 2 aimed to describe, compare and analyze the influence of two training modalities... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Pain Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs of Doctor of Physical Therapy Students: Changes Across the Curriculum and the Role of an Elective Pain Science Course

Wassinger, Craig A. 01 January 2021 (has links)
Introduction: Entry-level physical therapist education on pain has been described as lacking. Calls have been made to include pain science courses to address this knowledge gap. Methods: Physical therapist students’ pain knowledge and attitudes were measured using the revised Neurophysiology of Pain Questionnaire (rNPQ) and Pain Attitudes and Beliefs Scale for Physical Therapists (PABS-PT), respectively. Univariate ANOVAs, with post hoc pairwise comparison and effect sizes, were used to measure these aspects over time. Results: Pain knowledge and clinician beliefs were significantly different (p < 0.001) at various curricular timepoints. rNPQ scores increased from 1st to 2nd year (effect size: 1.10), remained similar between years 2 and 3, and improved following the pain course (effect size: 1.25). Biomedical beliefs were similar during years 1, 2 and 3, and declined following the pain course (effect size: 1.56). Conversely, psychosocial belief scores increased from 1st to 2nd year (effect size: 0.82), remained similar between years 2 and 3, and increased following the pain course (effect size: 1.08). Discussion/Conclusions: Physical therapist education, without a dedicated pain science course, may be insufficiently preparing students to treat patients in pain. Educators should consider adopting a dedicated pain science course or substantially bolstering embedded curricular pain content to promote best practice in pain treatment.

ATTITUDES, BELIEFS, AND STRATEGIES OF AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS TOWARDS MENTAL HEALTH: A NARRATIVE CASE STUDY

Kapatamoyo, Kombe Mable Kateule 01 May 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Mental health may be defined as a state of wellbeing which affects all aspects of an individual's emotions, social behavior, and psychological behavior. As a dimension of health, it is a vital aspect of an individual’s existence, and it affects their quality of life and daily activities. However, like physical health, there may be a need to maintain or improve one's mental health when challenges are present. Therefore, in this study, using a qualitative narrative case study approach, I explored the mental health attitudes and beliefs of African International Students. I examined strategies they used to address mental health challenges faced as they studied in the United States. I also utilized the Health Belief Model (HBM) as the conceptual framework to address discrimination and other social environment obstacles that African International Students faced when seeking help. As part of the study, I collected data from a sample of African International Students studying at a mid-sized Midwestern university and analyzed the information to determine factors that influenced a student’s attitudes toward mental health. As the researcher, my desire was to utilize the results of the study to assist with future interventions in this particular group of students.

Normative beliefs, misperceptions, and heavy episodic drinking in a British student sample

McAlaney, John, McMahon, J. January 2007 (has links)
Yes / Objective: Numerous studies have demonstrated the existence and effect of normative misperceptions on heavy episodic drinking behavior. However, there has been little work on these processes or application of normative-belief interventions outside the U.S. college system. The aim of the current study, therefore, was to investigate heavy episodic drinking and normative misperceptions in a U.K. university setting. Method: An email containing a link to a survey Web site was distributed to all current undergraduate students at the University of Paisley, Scotland. In addition to age and gender questions, the survey contained items on students¿ personal behavior and perception of the level of that behavior in three groups of increasing social distance: close friends, other students of the same age, and other people of the same age in U.K. society in general. Results: Completed surveys from 500 respondents were returned. In keeping with previous research, significant correlations were found between the respondents¿ behavior and the perception of that behavior in others, with beliefs about the most proximal individuals being the most strongly correlated. The majority of respondents were also found to overestimate alcohol consumption in other students. An age effect was noted, in which misperceptions appeared to decrease with age but did not vary between genders. Conclusions: The findings of the study indicate that the normative-belief alcohol consumption processes that have been found on U.S. college campuses also operate in U.K. university settings. This raises the possibility of applying social-norms interventions from the United States to the United Kingdom and potentially elsewhere in the world. Furthermore, the study noted apparent age effects in the degree of misperception, the implications of which are discussed

In terms of language beliefs and attitudes, the focus is on surveys carried out in Foz do Iguaçu, collected via CAL Project, where we verified how the speakers evaluate those who speak different from them. During the analysis, we noticed recurrence to the use of argumentative operators, indicating evidence of language beliefs and attitudes. The argumentative maneuvers made by the informants to justify their choices or to present data considered relevant for the constitution of their answers were considered as explanation for uses not checked yet in the corpus. To verify this hypothesis, we selected statements with the operators "já", "até" and "então". For this, we chose to work with studies on the argumentative semantics, from authors like Ducrot (1981, 1987, 2009) and Koch (2002); and language beliefs and attitudes, with studies of López Morales (1993), Moreno Fernandez (1998) and Blanco Canales (2004). With these studies, we tried to work with elements that operate argumentatively and, at the same time, introduce the informants’ beliefs and attitudes. The objective of this analysis was to find a relationship between the use of operators and the ways to set beliefs by informants. Initially, we raised the hypothesis that some operators would be used to set one or another kind of belief and, during the research, the search for validation of this hypothesis enabled the identification of important data regarding the way informants use argumentative operators to express their opinions about the language and culture of others.

English Grammar Teaching in Practice : Teachers’ beliefs and attitudes

Béchy, Galaxie January 2022 (has links)
Grammar teaching has been controversial since the introduction of the Communicative Language Teaching perspective. In addition, the steering documents, namely the Swedish syllabi and the CEFR are quite general on what and how to teach grammar, thus allowing teachers’ interpretations about the importance given to grammar in EFL/ESL classrooms. The present study focuses on English teachers’ beliefs, attitudes, and practices towards grammar in the final year of compulsory school and the first year of upper-secondary school in Sweden. The principal aim is to find out why the English teachers propose grammar or not and how they enact grammar teaching. The research is empirical. The data consist of teachers’ interviews, and they were analysed using content analysis. The results have shown that teachers’ beliefs, attitudes, and practices are mainly related to students’ levels and objectives even if they have different views on grammar. Then, teachers have shown great adaptability in their grammar teaching practices both in the diversity of means and methods. Furthermore, even though there are slight differences between the final year of compulsory school and the first year of upper-secondary school in the steering documents, grammar teaching is enacted differently for each level. Besides, on both levels, grammar teaching is linked to communicative skills and included in a more general communicative task aimed for students’ learning in EFL/ESL classrooms.
