Rheological and mechanical development of a fiber-reinforced concrete for an application in civil engineering

In the course of revitalizing the Poseidon Building in Frankfurt, an energetically optimized façade, made of an architectural concrete was developed. The development of a fiber-reinforced architectural concrete had to consider the necessary mechanical strength, design technology and surface quality. The fiber-reinforced architectural concrete has a compressive strength of 104.1 MPa and a 3-point bending tensile strength of 19.5 MPa. Beyond that, it was ensured that the fiber-reinforced high-performance concrete had a high durability, which has been shown by the capillary suction of de-icing solution and freeze thaw test with a weathering of abrasion of 113 g/m² after 28 freeze-thaw cycles and a mean water penetration depth of 11 mm.

The Swedish Transport Administration has been giving the task to set up a new standard for concrete slabs for the new high-speed railway in Sweden. They are demanding that the concrete slabs must be dimensioned according to the German Beton Kalender 2000. This report will explore the results when dimensioning a slab track, according to the German Beton Kalender 2000. Moment capacity, deformation, and crack width are calculated according to two structural theories, namely slab and beam theory, and a comparison between the two methods is presented.

Cette thèse aborde le domaine de la prédiction des ouvrages en béton armé soumis à des charges dynamiques sévères de type impact. Elle s'intéresse plus particulièrement aux impacts d'avions sur les enceintes de confinement en béton armé. La modélisation de ces structures doit être capable de reproduire de manière fiable et efficace le comportement discontinu local ainsi que la réponse globale de l'ouvrage. Localement, la méthode des éléments discrets est utilisée pour représenter correctement les phénomènes discontinus. <br /><br />L'application de la méthode des éléments discrets sur des structures de grandes dimensions est limitée par le nombre d'éléments discrets nécessaires. Pour garder la qualité de prédiction locale et rendre cette méthode adaptée à l'échelle d'une structure, celle-ci est couplée à la méthode des éléments finis dans les parties qui ne sont pas soumises à d'importantes discontinuités. Cette approche couplée permet des gains de temps importants, tant pour la modélisation que la pour la simulation.<br /><br />Une partie importante de cette thèse concerne le développement et la validation du modèle éléments discrets de béton armé. Ce travail propose une optimisation du processus d'identification des paramètres locaux du modèle discret afin de le rendre plus prédictif en ce qui concerne le béton. Ensuite, une liaison particulière, entre éléments discrets d'acier et de béton, a été conçue pour la simulation du béton armé. Enfin, elle a été utilisée pour la simulation d'impacts sur des dalles en béton armé afin de confronter les résultats à des essais expérimentaux.<br /><br />La deuxième partie du travail de thèse traite de la méthode de couplage entre éléments discrets et éléments finis. Une méthode existante pour les éléments finis volumiques a été étendue aux éléments finis de type coque. Enfin, la méthode de couplage a été utilisée pour simuler un impact sur une structure de type enceinte de confinement.

Ziel der Arbeiten ist die Entwicklung von Verbindungsgeometrien für ebene, textilbewehrte Betonbauteile auf Basis der Klebtechnik. Zur Charakterisierung des Tragverhaltens geeigneter Verbindungen werden umfangreiche experimentelle Verbunduntersuchungen auf Garn- und Bauteilebene durchgeführt. Mit den so gestalteten Verbindungen mit nachträglichem Verguss lassen sich die Referenzlasten des ungestörten Bauteils erreichen, wobei eine weitere Optimierung der Klebung zur Gewährleistung einer vereinfachten Herstellbarkeit und eines reproduzierbaren Versagensverhaltens anzustreben ist.

Die Methode der Böschungsertüchtigung mit Erdbetonstützscheiben ist ein etabliertes Verfahren. In der Vergangenheit entwickelte Bemessungsverfahren für Böschungen mit Stützscheiben konnten sich bis heute nicht durchsetzen. Stattdessen behilft man sich in der Praxis mit einer Art Ersatzverfahren. Mit diesem Verfahren wird die Standsicherheit der Böschung mit Stützscheiben teilweise unzutreffend ermittelt. Dies wird in der Arbeit begründet und anhand von Beispielen verifiziert. Die Tragwirkung der Stützscheiben kann nur durch räumliche numerische Berechnungen ausreichend genau erfasst werden. Es wird eine zwingend erforderliche Typisierung der Stützscheiben bezüglich ihres Tragverhaltens und des Bruchmechanismus durchgeführt. Die erreichbare Stabilisierungswirkung der Stützscheiben hängt wesentlich von der Scheibengeometrie und dem Scheibenabstand ab. In der Arbeit werden für einen Scheibentypen der Versagensmechanismus, das Tragverhalten sowie deren Einflüsse ausführlich analysiert und anschließend ein Bemessungsverfahren hergeleitet. Für weitere Scheibentypen werden Vorschläge für mögliche Bemessungsverfahren angegeben.

Hybrid Fabrics as Cement Matrix Reinforcement

Hybrid systems with two or more fiber materials were used to combine the benefits of each fiber into a single composite product. Strength and toughness optimization of hybrid thin sheet composites has been studied extensively using combination of different fiber types with low and high modulus of elasticity. Hybrid reinforcement is more significant when the reinforcing structure is in fabric geometry. Fabric structure provides full control on the exact location of each yarn and its orientation in the composite during production, thus maximizes the reinforcing efficiency. A high-strength, high-modulus fiber primarily tends to increase the composite strength with nominal improvements in toughness. A low-modulus fiber expected to mainly improve toughness and ductility. Combination of two or more types of fiber can produce a composite that is both strong and tough as compared to a mono fiber composite. The purpose of the current work was to study hybrid warp knitted fabrics as reinforcement for cementbased composite, having AR (Alkali Resistance) glass and Polypropylene (PP) as the reinforcing yarns. The examined ratios between the two different yarns were 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0 (glass: PP, by percentage). It was found that in the hybrid system, the fracture mechanism is a superposition of the mono systems, and the tensile behavior is a combination between the two materials.

Connection between the Impregnation of Glass Multi-Filament Yarns and their Pull-out Behaviour

This experimental study focuses on the links that exist between the mechanical pull-out behaviour of multi-filament yarns embedded in concrete and the impregnation of the yarn by the concrete. To this aim, 5 glass yarns have been embedded in concrete (AR and E glass yarns from assembled or direct roving). A pre-treatment was applied to the yarn before the casting, and was chosen in the following three: wetting, drying or pre-impregnation with a cement slurry. By this way, 15 yarn / pre-treatment combinations were obtained that generate 15 conditions of impregnation of the yarn by the cementitious matrix. In each case, the mechanical properties were determined from a classical pull-out test and the yarns impregnation properties were characterized by two dedicated tests: yarns porosity measurements and along yarn water flow measurements. By studying the relationship between the mechanical behaviour and the physical properties of the impregnated yarns, it is shown that the pre- and post-peak behaviour are mainly connected to the flow rate measured during the water flow measurements, which suggest a specific influence of the connected pores parallel to the filaments and of the penetration depth of the matrix into the yarn. The postpeak and the residual behaviour are moreover linked to the yarn pore volume associated to the disorder induced in the filaments assembly by the penetration of the matrix. The overall result of this work is a contribution to the understanding of the relationship between the impregnation of the yarns and the pull-out behaviour.
