A comparison of the rate and accuracy of symbol location on visual displays using colour-coded alphabetic and categorisation strategies in Grade 1 to 3 childrenHerold, M.P. (Marina Patricia) 02 July 2012 (has links)
THIS THESIS IS IN THE EXAMINATION PROCESS The ability to locate symbols on a visual display forms an integral part of the effective use of AAC systems. Characteristics of display design and perceptual features of symbols have been shown to influence rate and accuracy of symbol location (Thistle&Wilkinson, 2009; Wilkinson, Carlin,&Jagaroo, 2006). The current study endeavoured to compare the use of two colour-coded organisational strategies (alphabetical order and subcategorisation) for their effectiveness in symbol location and to investigate if some bottom-up features influenced the performance of the participants in these tasks. 114 learners in Grade 1 to 3 in a mainstream school were randomly divided into two groups. Both of the groups were exposed to two visual search tests in alternating order. The tests involved searching for 36 visual targets amongst 81 coloured Picture Communication Symbols on a computer screen in one of two colour-coded organizational methods, namely alphabetical order or subcategorisation. The data from the research task was collected through computer logging of all mouse selections. Findings showed that locating symbols on a computer screen with a subcategorisation strategy was significantly faster and more accurate than with an alphabetical strategy for the Grade 1 to 3 participants. The differences between the rates and accuracy of target symbol location using the two strategies decreased significantly as grade increased. It was also found that although the tests in this study placed heavy top-down processing demands on the participants, there was still evidence of bottom-up factors influencing their performance. Implications for display design in AAC clinical practice were discussed. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) / Unrestricted

Mitigating Underage Marriage of Girls in Bo Town, Sierra LeoneKamanda, Anne-Marie Kumba 01 January 2017 (has links)
The underage marriage of girls (UMG) practice by some parents continues to occur in Bo Town, Sierra Leone, and it is a problem. Regardless of the negative consequences, parents continue to marry off their young girls who become wives of rebels and participate in the civil war. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of adult women between 18 and 24 who experienced child marriage, parents who married off their young girls, and community leaders to understand why the UMG persisted in Bo Town. The theoretical frameworks used in this study were the social cognitive theory and self-efficacy behavioral theory. Data were collected through semi structured interviews. Participants in this study consisted of 5 community leaders, 5 adult women between 18 and 24 who experienced UMG before 18 years old, and 5 parents who married off their underage girls in the Bo Town district. Interview transcripts were analyzed, coded, and 16 themes emerged. Some of the themes included poverty, lack of awareness, education, enforcement, monitoring, leadership, child marriage, domestic violence, accountability, responsibility, dowry payment, and female genital mutilation. The findings may influence social change by using practices such as educating, monitoring, enforcing the banning of the UMG policy relentlessly. Furthermore, implementation of mentorship programs, counseling, leadership, and awareness training to young girls and parents could reduce the UMG practice in Bo Town. Consequently, if young girls are educated and allowed access to resources, they could become empowered and productive members of society as a whole, and the UMG problem may diminish in the Bo community.

Srovnání BI platforem IBM Cognos a SAP BO / Comparison of BI platforms IBM Cognos and SAP BONovák, Ondřej January 2011 (has links)
Business Intelligence platforms contain many detailed tools with overlapping functionality. The primary aim of this thesis is to compare two BI platforms from leaders in the market - IBM Cognos BI (version 10) and SAP Business Objects (version 3.1). This comparison emphasises their practical usefulness in both ad hoc and standard reporting. In the first theoretical chapter there is a definition of basic terms and a brief description of the BI solution. In the following two chapters there are detailed descriptions of IBM Cognos BI and SAP Business Objects platforms including the most important tools. The theoretical part of this thesis is based mostly on documentation. The practical part of this thesis defines criteria for the evaluation of BI platforms. Following this chapter is the main comparison based mostly on my practical experience with each tool and experience from a migration project from IBM Cognos to SAP BO. Workarounds are described in some cases to compensate for missing functionality. The results this thesis are evaluation criteria as well as a description and comparison of both platforms. The merit of this thesis is an identification of problematic functionality present in BI solutions from the points of view of new development, implementation and migration.

Effects of cooperative governance in the sewage treatment works in the upper Vaal River / M.F. Mamabolo.Mamabolo, Mmamala Florah January 2012 (has links)
The Upper Vaal Water Management Area (Upper Vaal WMA) lies in the eastern interior of South Africa. This WMA includes the Vaal, Klip, Wilge, Liebenbergsvlei and Mooi Rivers and extends to the confluence of the Mooi and Vaal Rivers. It also includes major dams such as the Vaal Dam, Grootdraai Dam and Sterkfontein Dam. The southern half of the WMA extends over the Free State province; the north-east mainly falls within Mpumalanga and the northern and western parts in Gauteng and North West provinces respectively (DWAF 2004). Several wastewater treatment works (WWTW) located in this area do not meet the standard set by the present legislation that addresses proper treatment of water. This results in number of problems that affect the quality of water in this catchment.
It was noted by the WRC (2006b) that with the challenges of implementation in an environment of shared responsibility, it is increasingly recognised that public/government institutions must foster institutional cooperation and interaction for efficient provision of public services, both at the policy-strategy level and the operational-implementation level. According to WRC (2006b), poor cooperation between institutions in the implementation of their interrelated mandates has resulted in inefficient utilization of scarce resources and/or endless disputes.
In order to address this shortcoming, a study that investigated the effects of cooperative governance in the Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in the Upper Vaal Water Management Area was initiated. The results of the research indicate a lack of cooperation between the three spheres of governance that participate in the sustainable management of water treatment in this area. / Thesis (M. Environmental Management)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Previous issue date: 2017-03-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The return of exhibitions at the São Paulo Art Museum “Assis Chateaubriand” - MASP from the year 2015 is a review of the museological program with ways to outline the next Maspian actions. The Italian exhibition design, delineated from the influence of El Lissitisky and the production within the European vanguards, had in Brazil MASP as a space for its expression through mainly the performance of Lina Bo Bardi. From this context, the present research aims to highlight aspects of Italian exhibition design, influenced by the premises of modern Italian architecture and art. The exhibition Fashionable art: collection MASP Rhodia (2015-2016) presents 79 pieces of clothing that were donated by Rhodia to the MASP collection in the year 1972, and this exhibition, through the analysis of its exhibition devices, the object of this research. Here we made use of the bibliographical and documentary techniques, if the latter stopped the analysis of documents, texts, drawings and images related to the exhibition Fashionable art: MASP Rhodia collection, held at the MASP Documentation Center. The exhibition presents a different display from those that marked the Italian production in the field of exhibition design. / O retorno de exposições no Museu de Arte de São Paulo "Assis Chateaubriand" – MASP a partir do ano de 2015 é uma revisão do programa museológico com vias a delinear as próximas ações maspianas. Previous issue date: 2018-03-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation studies the work of Architect Lina Bo Bardi in order to integrate the architectural conception and the Design of furniture, starting from the extremely significant production of Lina in these two fields in Brazil, whose work deserves attention. The hypothesis that guides the thesis is that the design conception present in Lina's work is based on a harmony of language, which is expressed in the integration of furniture design and architectural space. The objective of the research is to verify, to explain and to demonstrate possible relations and similarities between the design of the building and its interiors and furniture. It is worth noting that the Architect designed reference works, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and SESC Pompeia. She also worked directly in the production of furniture, with furniture factories Studio Palma and Pau-Brasil. In order to ascertain the outstanding issues, the option chosen was to study in more depth the project that the Architect designed for her residence in the neighborhood of Morumbi, in São Paulo, which today is occupied by the Institute that bears her name and that of her husband, Pietro Maria Bardi. Created in order to preserve the memory of the legacy left by the couple in the field of arts, design and architecture, the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Institute is today visited by tourists, students and researchers from various parts of the world.
