Ideologies and practices of public diplomacy media outlets : a critical discourse analysis of China Radio International and Voice of AmericaCooper, Valerie Ann 24 September 2019 (has links)
Countries around the world are increasingly making use of public diplomacy methods in order to advance their interests and garner favour with foreign publics, with the aim of creating 'soft power'. One of the most direct methods of doing such is through state-sponsored media outlets, which serve as government mouthpieces with the ability to speak directly to foreign populations. Such practices have recently gained more attention from Western practitioners and academics due to their increased use by countries like Russia and China, and especially in regards to their increasing media presence around the globe. However, this ignores the fact that countries like the United States have been using such outlets since the mid-1900s in openly propagandistic attempts to 'win hearts and minds. In order to understand the practices and ideologies used by such media outlets in their quest to influence foreign publics and create soft power, this research combines a content analysis with a Discourse-Historical Approach to critical discourse studies of two state-sponsored radio programmes, China Radio International and Voice of America, broadcast in March 2016. Of particular interest is the ideology and tactics used to portray countries such as China, the United States, and other countries into which these programmes are broadcast. The results demonstrate that cultural and media values feature subtly but significantly in these programmes, offering justification for their respective governments' actions, while also being used to condemn actions of other countries. Furthermore, the results reveal a hierarchical approach to coverage of countries, with many countries being reduced to inactive bystanders in global affairs.

Lärares erfarenheter av ämnesplanen för kursen Samhällskunskap 1 bEnroth, Björn January 2019 (has links)
This paper explores the curriculum of the Swedish social science course Samhällskunskap 1 b. This is done by analyzing the curriculum in question combined with semi-structural interviews of five teachers, exploring their experiences in teaching the course. The paper applies theories associated with street-level bureaucracy, originally from Michael Lipsky. The premise of the study is that teachers are bureaucrats who must follow a specific curriculum. The study concludes that the theories of street-level bureaucrats are applicable to the situation of social science teachers in their relation to the curriculum. The study also concludes that the interviewed teachers all interpret the curriculum in slightly different manners. This could in turn be seen as a possibility for the individual teacher to adapt the course to suit a range of students, as well as something that potentially threatens the fundamental reasons of a curriculum.

last decades we can observe a large aging population worldwide. This theme was
developed from the need to report the clinical experience in home physical therapy
home care for elderly patients. The objective of this study is to understand the
importance of the physio-geriatric care has on the lives of senior citizens at home in
the city of São Paulo. To this end, we used the approach to clinical research through
a qualitative field research. The participants are 8 elderly over the age of 70 years
(which were: 2 men and 6 women). The procedure of the research involved the
collection of testimonies of individuals selected in their homes during the year 2009.
This process was carried out by observation and open interviews semi-structured in
the form of narratives written in free speech. The results revealed that the importance
of this type of intervention is related to the physical benefits gained by older body, but
the fact remains that the physio-care geriatric home beyond the simple trade professionals and end extending over a long period time, establishing,a relationship of growth and development with regard to respect, dedication and affection / O objeto de estudo desta pesquisa é o cuidado fisiogerontológico domiciliar.

In this thesis, we are concerned with the qualitative study of solutions of Hamiltonian partial differential equations by the way of the invariant measures theory. Indeed, existence of such a measure provides some informations concerning the large time dynamics of the PDE in question. In this thesis we treat two "extremal" situations. In the first part, we consider equations with infinitely many conservation laws, and in the second, we study equations for which we know only one non-trivial conservation law.We study the first equations by considering the Benjamin-Ono equation. The latter is a model describing internal waves in a fluide of great depth. We are concerned with the dynamics of that equation on the space C^infty(T) by constructing for it an invariant measure on that space. Accordingly, an almost sure (w.r.t. this measure) recurrence property is established for infinitely smooth solutions of that equation. Then, we prove qualitative properties for the constructed measure by showing that there are infinitely many independent observables whose distributions via this measure are absolutely continuous w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure on R. Moreover, we establish that the measure is of at least 2-dimensional nature. In this work, we used the Fluctuation-Dissipation-Limit (FDL) approach introduced by Kuksin and Shirikyan. Notice that an almost sure recurrence property for the Benjamin-Ono equation was established on Sobolev spaces by Deng, Tzvetkov and Visciglia. In the second part of the thesis, we consider the cubic Klein-Gordon equation, which is an example of Hamiltonian PDEs for which we know only one conservation law. This equation models the evolution of a massive relativistic particle. Here, we consider both the case of the tri-dimensional periodic solutions and those defined on a bounded domain of R^3. In both settings, we construct an invariant measure concentrated on the Sobolev space H^2xH^1, again with use of the FDL approach. Another aspect of this work is to extend the FDL approach to the context of PDEs having only one conservation law; indeed, in previous works, this approach required two conservation laws. Qualitative properties for the measure and almost sure (w.r.t. this measure) recurrence for H^2-solutions are proven. Notice that previous works by Burq-Tzvetkov, de Suzzoni, Bourgain-Bulut and Xu have treated the invariant Gibbs measure problem in the radial symmetry context for waves equations.

Peace and recovery : witnessing lived experience in Sierra LeoneTwort, Lauren January 2015 (has links)
A critical re-examination of the liberal peace is conducted to explore the ways in which certain ideas around peace have come to dominate and to be regarded as “common sense”. The foundation of my critique comes in the personalisation of peacebuilding through the stories of people who are the intended beneficiaries of its actions. This thesis seeks to open up and challenge the current measures of success and the location of power by introducing voices and experiences of Mende people located in the Southern and Eastern provinces of Sierra Leone. I have attempted to open up a reflexive space where simple questions can be re-examined and the location of recovery can be seen as a space influenced, shaped and performed in the context of diverse influences. I draw on my personal experience living in Bo, Sierra Leone for two months in 2014 and local level actors' subjective reflections on individual and communal notions of recovery, post-conflict. My findings are reflected in “building blocks” that uncover a partial story of personal perspectives on recovery. The story suggests a de-centred and complex “local” within the existing context and realigns the understanding of subject and agency within peacebuilding. This collection of experiences, stories and encounters reshapes the notion of peace as an everyday activity with the aim of improving well-being on a personal level. It is also a part of the peacebuilding process that exists outside of the traditional organisational lens. My main contribution has been in allowing alternative space(s) of peacebuilding and peace-shaping to have a platform that is not restricted by the confined epistemic “expert” community toward an understanding of “progress” as an experiential and subjective process of recovery. This approach sought to challenge the current site of legitimacy, power and knowledge, and in order to achieve this aim I drew on a new methodological toolkit and the absorption of key concepts from other disciplines such as managerialism and the sociological concept of the “stranger”. My research offers an opportunity to observe and utilise information sourced from the creativity and spontaneity of the everyday lived experiences of Sierra Leoneans and ordinary phenomena connected with this.

SUR QUELQUES MODELES ASYMPTOTIQUES DANS LA THEORIE DES ONDES HYDRODYNAMIQUESMammeri, Youcef 17 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Bai Juyi's Poetry as a Common Culture in Pre-modern East AsiaLin, Che-Wen, Cindy 29 November 2012 (has links)
This paper applies a hermeneutic approach to analyze, and a comparative approach to examine, Bai Juyi’s poems referenced in Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, Pillow Book by Sei Shōnagon, Tongguk Yi Sang-guk Chip by Yi Kyu-bo and Kyewŏn Pilgyŏngjip by Ch’oe Ch’i-wŏn. Through exploring Bai’s poetry in these texts, the author discovers how Murasaki, Sei, Ch’oe, and Yi contributed to transculturuation in Korea and Japan. Furthermore, the transculturation demonstrated by these literati shows a diversity of patterns: cultural mobilization from west to east; the emergence of overlapping histories in different eras and locations; a disappeared culture, recovered through being transmitted to other regions; cultural transplantation or transformation resulting from cultural contacts; and cultural products helped to stimulate economic growth. Subsequently, Bai Juyi’s works stand as a testament to the power of great poetry to improve and enhance cultures across a broad span of time and space.
