Andersson, Joacim January 2014 (has links)
The overall aim of this thesis is to theoretically explore and empirically analyse practical embodied knowledge in educational settings. In accordance to this aim an approach of body pedagogics is used in combination with classical pragmatism, using foremost William James’ and John Dewey’s concepts of experience, meaning, inquiry and habit. In addition, these concepts are combined with an idea of reflexive body techniques. A main focus lies on investigating the learning of body techniques in dinghy sailing by studying the process and the product of teaching and learning, the role of the instructor for sailors’ learning and the interplay between teaching and learning. The thesis entails three case studies consisting of video recordings of dinghy sailing, all using a combination of theoretical explorations and practical epistemology analysis (PEA). Empirical focus lies on how sailors grow into purposeful body techniques by taking the measure of their ongoing, continuous experience while coordinating their movements with the environment. The analyses show how understandings and bodily skills are simultaneously used in the educational situations where the dinghy sailors have to handle both the environment and various instructions given by the trainer. The result is presented through a descriptive model, comprising theoretical explorations and empirical analysis, through which it is possible to emphasise both the process and the content of the learning of body techniques. The methodological contribution of the thesis thus also consists of developed tools for analysing processes of body pedagogics at a micro level.

Mercier Lambert, Marie-Philippe 12 1900 (has links)
British artist Carey Young’s Body Techniques (2007) series was created in the context of a residency at the Sharjah Biennal, in the United Arab Emirates. The eight large-scale photographs of the series depict the artist, dressed in a business woman’s attire, reenacting eight famous works associated with conceptual art. The backdrops to these actions are unusual and futuristic-looking landscapes from in and around the cities of Dubai and Sharjah. This analysis attempts to demonstrate the paradoxical essence of the series, which calls into question the political status that Young claims for her artwork. The paradox unfolds through three axes, which are used to structure this investigation: the varied mediations between Body Techniques and the artworks it is inspired from, the deconstruction of the landscape as “medium”, and the active role played by the photographic apparatus. This detailed examination of each of the paradox’s occurrences serves to reveal Body Techniques as an exemplary embodiment of the double bind presiding over any work of political contemporary art: that which allows artists to criticize the system they participate in, but also constrains them to participate in the system which they criticize.

The social construction of body-person in an andean community of south peruvian andes

La Riva González, Palmira 12 December 2012 (has links)
In the Andes of southern Peru (Cuzco), the human being-person is not given at birth ipso facto, once and for all. It is the « product » of a social « Construction » throughout the life cycle of individuals. Born in a state of « animality » and « wildness », the newborn child is supposed to be Saqra. This term refers to the sphere of non-social, and wild nightlife and it is opposed to the human, domesticated and diurnal sphere. It is therefore necessary for the newborn to be transformed in a social human being-person, man (qhari) or woman (warmi). This process of humanization is obtained throughout the life cycle rituals.

Devenir et rester capoeiriste en europe : transmissions interculturelles et 'mondialité' de la capoeira afro-brésilienne / Becoming and Remaining Capoeirista in Europe : intercultural Transmissions And 'Mondialité' of Afro-Brazilian Capoeira / Tornar-se e manter-se capoeirísta na Europa : transmissão intercultural e “mondialité” na capoeira afro-brasileira

Aceti, Monica 30 November 2011 (has links)
The spread of Brazilian capoeira in the world is supported by the increasing mobility of the actors of its transmission between Brazil and Europe, as well as the possibilities created by current information circulation (YouTube, Internet). The capoeira roda (circle) presents itself as a space of plural expressions of ‘encircled’ individualities. Out of consideration for a ‘tradition’ and ‘foundations’, the control of the group and the master is over the bodies that perform a dance-fight and reverse –hands against the ground and feet up to the sky –in a playful way almost to the point of becoming subversive regarding sports effectiveness. In this work of interviews analysis (N=134) and participating observation in fields from various locations in Europe and Brazil, we concentrated on understanding how the career of capoeiristas are generated in Europe. In an interactionist and deeply rooted perspective, we have noticed that Gilberto Freyre’s myth of miscegenation finds a second life ‘outside’. Behind this mask, a first typological model (the micro-firms) reveals a liberal, commercial and patriarchal organization. These structures now train the most deserving members of their rank in the ‘job’ of capoeirista and acknowledge them as teacher, contramestre and more recently as mestre. From a marginal and exotic activity – this intangible cultural product recently recognized as Brazilian Heritage – is now the subject of commercial tensions and territorial stakes. Some make a name for themselves by taking matters into their own hands through the use of the gancho (hook kick), others specialize in socio-cultural activities and a few mark the start of resistance: negaça (evasive move, also called ‘denial move’), malandragem (trickery) and diplomatic jugglery, such are the tools that those ‘dissident’ capoeiristas (second typology) acquired during their socialization with a hint of neo-patrimony. Others still meet around self-organized and participating exchange rodas, by creating locally their terreiros (places) of capoeira. We are witnessing a deterritorialisation process of Brazilian heritage which as the same time produces forms of intercultural relations of ‘mondialité’ referring to Édouard Glissant. Thus, this study shows that the globalization of capoeira can neither lead to a mac’homogenization, nor to its decharacterization, but to the multiple meanings of ways of being and acting of women and men capoeiristas according to three typological models: the patriarchal micro-firms, the néopatrimonial dissidents and the participatory exchange networks / A difusão da capoeira brasileira no mundo é levada pela mobilidade crescente dos actores da sua transmissão entre o Brasil e a Europa, assim como pelas possibilidades de circulação de informação actuais (YouTube, Internet).

La communauté villageoise de Litang, et ses transmissions généalogiques et rituelles dans la construction de la modernité chinoise (du XIXe siècle à nos jours) / The village community of Litang, and its genealogical and ritual transmissions in the building of Modern China (from the 19th century to nowadays)

Favraud, Georges 24 January 2013 (has links)
How does a local Chinese community, structured on the basis of both patrilineal and Daoist transmissions, participate in the building of “modernity”? This dissertation describes the way in which these two fundamental communal social structures are articulatedwith respect to each other, and the way in which they transform themselves in order to adapt to, and participate in, the social changes of their time. This monographic work also proposes, on a larger scale, an anthropological analysis of the society and history of the Xiang basin and Hunan province: from Confucian and patrilineal cults to agnatic kinship, as well as from ancient ritual, martial and medical Daoist traditions (Chunyang and Quanzhen), to their actual rearrangements in the “Chinese market socialism”, after having undergonethe first Communist peasant movements (1927) lead by Mao Zedong in his native region, and the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). The study of the contemporary mutations of the Chen lineage of Litang - an institution at the center of local power struggles, the hierarchization of sexual roles, and the village economy and ecology – leads us to reassert the very basison which Chinese parenthood groups elaborate themselves today. The analysisof the changes and the intermixturebetween parenthood and rituals, whichtake place in the local sanctuary of Increasing Transformations (Zenghua Guan) – an institution in charge of the local ritual life – shows that cult communitiesare one of the more fluid and sustainable structures of Chinese society.
