Masar, Terése January 2012 (has links)
The essay aims to highlight the picture book illustrator as an artist and above all indicate the style of Sven Nordqvist. This is implemented througt three different analyses. First an ikonotexual analysis where the text and picture interaction in Nordqvist’s books is investigated. An image analysis hightlights the specific style of the books illustrations and an additional analysis is trying to see a connection between the book cover, flyleaf, title-page and the actual story.

Grafická tvorba Jana Jiřího Balzera inspirovaná Norbertem Grundem ve sbírkách Národní galerie v Praze / Graphic creation of Jan Jiri Balzer inspired by Norbert Grund in the collections of The National Gallery in Prague

Kadlecová, Žaneta January 2012 (has links)
The target of my dissertation is to draw the character of the graphical works created by Jan Jiří Balzer which are kept in the collections of the National gallery in Prague. The resource of the graphical works of J. J. Balzer according to Norbert Grund includes more than five hundred and fifty items which remained almost non-elaborated. That's why, I would try to sort out and catalogue them. Beyond my dissertation, I would like to introduce a personality of the contemporary artist who is at the time the founder of an engraving plant and a successful businessman - who managed to interest the Czech graphical market of the second half of the 18-th century. As well as, I try to clarify, on base of the critical studying of available sources and literature, the circumstances which lead the artist to the graphical performance of the Norbert Grund's painting works. And last but not least I would like to outline the production of Jan Jiří Balzer in context of the contemporary creation and collecting of the 18-th century.

'n Esteties-kreatiewe herinterpretasie van Pieter en die Wolf deur Sergey Prokofiëf / Elma de Kock

De Kock, Elma January 2015 (has links)
Peter and the Wolf (1936) is a transmedial work based on a Russian fairy tale composed and written by Sergey Prokofiev . Prokofiev’s purpose with the work was amongst others to introduce children to the instruments of the symphony orchestra. This study examines the possibility of creating a new Afrikaans versification of the text in order to introduce this work to Afrikaans-speaking children. The creative product of the research consists of a picture book and a corresponding soundtrack together with the original music and a recitation of the text. The researcher cooperated with other artists in order to achieve the final product. Since the realisation of a creative product forms an integral part of this study, practice-based research has been utilised. The framework for practice-based research by Scrivener and Chapman (2004) has been used for the design of the study, the implementation thereof (theory and practice), as well as for the structure of the dissertation. The first step of the framework of Scrivener and Chapman (2004) entails the pre-project reflection, i.e. the identification of issues, as well as the concerns and interests of the researcher. It is important to the researcher that children are exposed to the instruments of the symphony orchestra, and she is also interested in picture books and fairy tales. Research revealed that there is no recent Afrikaans version of Peter and the Wolf. She consequently decided to do a versification of the text. The identification of the source domains relevant to the research theme and the creative project forms the second step of the framework. The initial source domains that were identified and studied were the theoretical concepts of intertextuality, intermediality and creative adaptation (Chapter 2). Peter and the Wolf originated as an intermedial work and thus the intermedial creative product is also a creative adaptation of the original work. As the study progressed, additional domains for research have been identified and examined. These are music, narrative poetry, children’s book illustrations, developmental psychology, cognitive narratology and information regarding the listener or reader (Chapter 3). Insight into the art forms and media can positively influence the progress of the creative product and can aid in creating an improved understanding of the intermedial effect of the total creative product. Because the target audience of the picture book is children between the ages of six and eight years, research was done on the developmental psychology of the child in the middle childhood years. In combination with this, cognitive narratology was studied to determine the reception of the creative product, and to assist with the analysis of the existing texts of Peter and the Wolf. Thereafter three existing editions of Peter and the Wolf were studied, based on the theoretical framework, and the intermedial interplay and creative possibilities for different medial combinations were examined (Chapter 4). These texts are: 1) a picture book, translated by Lydia Pienaar (1975); it is an equivalent translation of the original Russian text and has become a classical edition of the work in Afrikaans; 2) a poetic version by Philip de Vos of a performance text with the original music (2003); and 3) an alternative modern edition with musical arrangement, text and illustrations by Gavin Friday and Bono (2003). The latter combination of text, music, illustrations and recitation, was also used for the creative work in this study. Cycles of production and work reflection form part of the creative phase of practice-based research. In Chapter 5, the different phases of the versification process are discussed by analysing different versions of the manuscript. There is also a report on the co-operation with the other artists, and the development of the different media (the illustrations, the music realisation, the recitation and the sound mixing). In the post-project reflection the interplay between the theoretical research and the creative work was examined, as well as the contribution of the different research fields to the final creative project and the intermedial interplay between the different media that were used in the creative work. It was found that practice-based research is a very successful research method for a postgraduate study in which a creative project forms part of the study. The research method is not only advantageous for the development of the creative project, but also for thorough theoretical research. Furthermore, the researcher came to the conclusion that an improved understanding of the complex theoretical approaches develops when they are practically applied. This understanding is not necessarily based on theoretical research, but on the experience that was gained throughout this study. The creative product of this study can expand the horizon of the child in an intermedial way that will benefit the listener. Insight has been obtained on the way in which such a project can be undertaken. Furthermore, other intermedial projects can flow from this project. A translation of the poetic text can make this book and CD accessible to a large number of South African children. / MA (Afrikaans and Dutch), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Distopie in die grafiese roman : V for Vendetta as voorbeeld

Nienaber, J. E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines the genre of dystopian fiction in the graphic novel, V for Vendetta in which a futuristic police state, run by a totalitarian regime is portrayed. Since V for Vendetta draws on a number of other dystopian texts, New Historicist theory is employed which begins its analysis of literary texts by attempting to look at other texts as well as the historical context in which it originated, to aid in the understanding of that text. Therefore, V for Vendetta with its thorough character development and multi-dimensional storyline that the larger format of the graphic novel allows, is studied alongside other highly regarded novels. The characteristics of the nightmarish anti-utopia is identified and analysed in V for Vendetta by looking at real examples of totalitarian regimes from history. The chapters are divided into what I identified as the main themes of the totalitarian dystopia. Chapter one explains the concept of the utopia in order to grasp the concept of dystopia, and more specifically, the Totalitarian dystopia. Chapter two looks at the social structure of V for Vendetta as well as the common Totalitarian dystopia. Chapter three discusses the issue of censorship which is a recurring theme in dystopian fiction. Chapter four examines the manner in which the totalitarian regime manipulates the populace of the dystopia through propaganda. Chapter five discusses the systems of surveillance and lack of privacy in the Totalitarian dystopia and a chapter on the protagonist in dystopia concludes this study.

L'Ordre des Prêcheurs au miroir de l'estampe française et flamande (1594-1720) / The Order of Preachers through the Mirror of French and Flemish Engravings (ca. 1594-1720)

Rousseau, Claire 29 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the representation of the members of the Dominican Order as found in seventeenth century engravings. It seeks to examine the role of the French and Flemish engravers commissioned by the Order of Preachers in order to stress its social and moral importance. The engravings are an integral part of an artistic heritage with his own language, challenging our perception of the Dominican story, and more generally of the history itself. This has enabled us to question the contribution and the capacity of images either to reflect or to distort, like a mirror, the spiritual life and the theological debates in both the Church and in society during the seventeenth century.

Umění mezi sjezdy / Art to convention

Micka, Alois January 2019 (has links)
The goal of this dissertation is to document and present exhibition concepts of new or re- established galleries and exhibition halls united in the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists in Prague in 1964-1969. A partial goal is to find and clarify principal legal, political and cultural events in the background of which such exhibition and artistic life unfolded. The thesis covers the period between two conventions of the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists, i.e. the period from December 1964 until the end of 1969 with certain intermissions. In terms of the selection, it deals with "smaller" galleries that influenced the most the level of presentation of visual arts at exhibitions in Prague in the period under consideration. For this reason, attention is paid to the Václav Špála Gallery, Nová síň Gallery, Galerie Na Karlově náměstí, and the Vincenc Kramář Gallery. The basic topics of the dissertation are concentrated in two spheres that pervade one another. The first sphere is dedicated to fundamental social and political prerequisites for the establishment of "smaller" galleries as well as, in brief, the history of the formation of the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists. In particular, it deals with the then applicable legislation concerning the given field of cultural life of society. It takes...

Knihy nakladatelství Baobab pro děti předškolního věku a jejich role v rozvoji čtenářství / Children's books from the Baobab publishing house for pre-schoolchildren and their role in the development of the reading literary

Smutná, Petra January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the uniqueness of the Baobab publishing house books for pre-school children and to find out what is the opinion of parents and pre- school teachers on selected books from this publishing house, on their content and on their graphic design. In the theoretical part I describe and explain the basic concepts of the reading literacy. I also devote to the contemporary situation in the book market for children, especially pre- school children, mostly non-readers. I focus on a small alternative publishing house called Baobab, its book production for children in general, and on its awarded books. In the empirical part I interviewed parents (41 returned questionnaires altogether) about their awareness and opinion on the Baobab publishing house and on selected books published by Baobab, namely Jak zvířataspí (How Animals Sleep), Šmalcova ABECEDA (Šmalec's Alphabet) and Z domu a zahrady (From the House And the Garden). I also interviewed 7 pre- school teachers to find out about their awareness of the Baobab publishing house and about their opinion on the selected books. Unlike the parents, all teachers had known the publishing house. It was proved that although the publishing house was awarded several prizes for its children's books (especially for the graphic design), the...
