Fighting for change : narrative accounts on the appeal and desistance potential of boxingJump, Deborah Louise January 2015 (has links)
This doctoral research addresses the relationship between the sport of boxing and men’s desistance from violent crime. It examines how men make sense of violence as a result of participating in the sport, and how they subsequently rehearse and practice violence in their everyday lives both in and outside of the gym walls. Thirteen men were interviewed using Biographical Narrative Interviewing techniques as part of a six month ethnography in an inner-city boxing gym in the north of England. Furthermore, I spoke with three policy makers in the field of sport and desistance from crime, to ascertain whether or not they determined sport to be beneficial in promoting pro-social behaviour among adolescents. Throughout this thesis I pay particular attention to the participant’s understanding of violence and also how the logic of the gym reinforces attitudes favourable to violence and the maintenance of respect. Thus, this research discusses and elaborates on previous assumptions in sporting and desistance literature, and argues that while relevant, diversionary activities and sport-based rehabilitative programmes are only one element in the theory of change. In conclusion, arguments are put forward that state that boxing actually traps men in an attendant culture of respect that requires them to respond in aggressive ways to maintain an image of both masculinity and respect. This attendant culture - that is transposable between gym and street – can override the pro- social desisting elements that the gym can offer, and reinforces the logic and discourses that evokes and traps men in habits of responding to violence, therefore in terms of future policy and practice new directions need to be sought.

Lester Walton’s Champion: Black America’s Uneasy Relationship with Jack JohnsonMcKee, Dave 08 1900 (has links)
In 1908 Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world. His reign would be rife with controversy, leading to widespread racial violence and draconian government intervention. Lester Walton, theater critic for the New York Age, became obsessed with Johnson; his extensive writing on the boxer powerfully reveals not just Walton’s own struggle with issues of race in America, but sheds light on the difficulties the black community at large faced in trying to make sense of a figure who simultaneously represented hope for the positive change Reconstruction failed to produce and, ironically, also threatened to intensify the hardships of Jim Crow era oppression.

The depiction of boxing in classical Athenian art /Boivin, Lawrence J. January 2001 (has links)
The aim of this study is to test the assumption that the depictions of ancient boxing found on Attic Black and Red Figure pottery are accurate. Due to the scarcity of ancient written material and physical evidence, most of our knowledge of the sport must be based on the depictions themselves. / This thesis sets out to discover whether or not our basis of knowledge, the vases and their depictions, are accurate and reflect what truly happened in a boxing match. To accomplish this, two main variables are put to test: the ratio of left- and right-handed boxers, and the occurrence of certain tactics used when right-handed and left-handed fighters face each other. / Primary sources of depictions are drawn from the Panathenaic amphorae together with some other Attic Black and Red Figure vases. Boxing knowledge is that of the author, who has studied in the field for the past five years.

Night writing: The textual ideation of Andrew JepthaCampbell, Kurt January 2015 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The publication A South African Boxer in Britain contains the unique
aesthetic of the Cape Town born boxer Andrew Jeptha, the first black fighter
to win a British welterweight title in 1907. The booklet was published in 1910
to offer pecuniary relief to the blinded author (Jeptha) who incurred the
affliction during the very match that secured him the title. Thus, although
masquerading as a ‘light read’ of sporting achievements and memories from
abroad, I argue the booklet authorises a complex thinking on text, disability
and boxing. The thesis takes care to present the publication as a crucial
historical work that offers a level of psychic and racial strategy not naturally
thought to exist in the genesis of a turn-of-the-century boxer. The textual
ideation manifest in Jeptha’s booklet is mooted within the thesis as distinctive
in its accommodation of both desire and difference, rendering a calculation
that sees the text not as the deserted boundary where ‘mind’ and ‘flesh’ depart,
but rather as a particular bibliographic configuration where both these worlds
meet in a moment that remands reductive views of the gladiator and his words
of care. / 2020-01-01

Pistons, pins-ups & fisticuff - a graphic narrative exploration of architectural designWolf, Lewis 07 December 2012 (has links)
The project is an investigation of the development of architectural space through drawing. The aim is to arrive at a design through the use of a graphic novel. The building has three programmes that augment the current conditions of the context. A motorcycle workshop and showroom; a boxing academy, and short term accommodation [apartments]. If fiction is really an invented reality, then protagonists are interpretations of projected contexts. The use of a comic offers a subjective perspective of design, as well as the ability to explore spaces where architecture is a backdrop. This is similar to the use of architecture in film. Parallel to the progression of the storyline, the process of illustrating the scenes forms the platform for the development of the architectural design. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted
